So then you are not one of those people claiming that the "rich" do not pay nearly enough taxes? From your response, I can only deduce that we must be in agreement. The notion that the "rich" need to pay significantly more is utterly preposterous. If anything, it is time that the remaining 90% that only pays 30% of revenues, start paying their fair share.

Unless your heart is touched by something truly benevolent like St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, you would be crazy to want to give good money away for a no good purpose.

Nobody's heart is in it when they pay taxes to give money away for people doing nothing, and they ain't got even a damn bit of gratitude for those who sacrifice so they can sit on their ass.

I guess? But tax's and gubmint allocation to organizations like St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is just one way they receive donations. You have the rich that give, Religious donations, everyday folks, union workers and so on.. But the bulk of their funding comes from non governmental sources..

If you are relying on the generosity of Government to keep a institution like St Jude operating then look for failure.. In essence, the Gubmint/WE are forced to donate simply because donations are tax deductions.. The rich donate and then receive a deduction from their percentage of taxable incomes..

I always hope to pay less income tax, but some of my income seems to fall into the top bracket. It really bothers me when I hear about government waste.

    BUT

The United States is the wealthiest country on earth, BUT we have about the worst healthcare of industrialized nations, poor educational level, and a declining life expectancy. Also, we are definitely not the happiest country.
In the 1950's the top income tax rate was 90%. We built highways and bridges. We put a man on the moon in the 60's. Life was pretty good. Now, our highways and bridges are falling apart.
(I sure of the truth of the following, but I am too old to remember the exact numbers.) About 1970 the CEOs of the major corporations made 50x as much as the basic employees. Now they make 250x as much as the basic employees. Maybe the top 1% should be able to pay a bit more tax.
Each year 640,000 people declare bankruptcy because of medical expenses. One in 4 of all couples will declare medical bankruptcy during retirement.
If the United States is going to continue to be the richest, strongest nation, we will need to stay ahead of the competition. We can only stay ahead if we are the best educated, healthiest, happiest, and most productive country.

I think that we need to focus on what is best for the future of our society as well as what is the "right" thing to do.

Nah, what Sanders wants to do is scare the rich, make them uneasy, and coerce them to pay more taxes to save their wealth. Classic shakedown...

    On what?

Paying income taxes even though I sustain a loss? Umm, working on credit will do it.

It would help the discussion if you would detail the changes you have in mind. How do you propose getting the rich to pay more tax when you say that "raising taxes on the rich won't work"?

What changes in the tax code would force them to pay more tax without making them pay more tax?

The point is the poor don't pay taxes. I don't call taxes theft. I call them legal confiscation. People in power take my money to spend on what they want. I don't know how else to describe it.

Every State must tax citizens in order to function.

But no state appears to care how the people want the money spent.

The top 1% of income earners pay 40% of Federal income taxes.
The top 10% of income earners pay 70% of Federal income taxes.
The top 50% of income earners pay 96% of Federal income taxes.
The bottom 50% of income earners only pay about 4% of Federal income taxes.

The rich are already paying nearly ALL of the Federal income taxes.

Why do you want to steal more of their money?

They still enjoy great luxury. And many people are still dying due to lack of medical care.
