Oh my goodness, this virus business is getting serious. At least for the 1.5 billion Chinese who celebrate the Lunar New Year. :xmassanta:

With some luck, we'll always stay technologically advanced enough to combat whatever new virus spawns into existence.

Really? What kind of technology are we are going to be advanced enough to develop and deploy in the next couple of months to head off the current quite powerful growth rate of advance of this disease?

Its here. USA, Europe, Middle east, Russia, a 10 or 15 percent death rate, or even simply illness rate will make some big changes.

China is much more affected than the 10 million people in multiple cities mentioned.

Could be a overblown concern. But its bigger than the SARS fears and it's only a very short of time.

Chinese new year celebrations will be smaller than planned this year in efforts to contain the spread of the virus. Will be more serious if it spreads in some of the other countries with confirmed cases.

I'm starting to think that my early dismissal of the seriousness of this was incorrect but the numbers are growing, and chjnanis obviously taking this seriously.

I need to be paying more attention to this instead of sports scores.

Hey, let the free market solve the problem. Who needs the CDC? Isn't that the Trumpian attitude?

The CDC doesn't have a big enough response capacity IF the can find or develop an anti-virus. That would need to go to private vendors for production.

Nobody argues against things like the CDC being in existence.

Not sure why you are trying to create that arguement

No, government has a role in protecting innocent life from all threats - foreign and domestic.

What government has no business doing is equalizing incomes.

Seems some are just here to smear people to make themselves feel better.. its why so many false arguements are presented instead of discussing the topic..

I find it strange there is a patent on this particular virus and they were already trying to develop a vaccine for it...

College student quarantined in Texas with suspected coronavirus case
By Erin SchumakerJan 23, 2020, 4:56 PM ET

Health authorities in Texas are investigating a suspected coronavirus case in a Texas A&M student, according to the local health department.

The student, who recently traveled to Wuhan, went to an emergency department yesterday with a cough and congestion.

"The patient we're tracking had very mild symptoms," Dr. Eric Wilke, of the Brazos County Health Department, said at a Thursday news conference.

The patient is in isolation at home as health care workers are performing tests to determine whether the student contracted the coronavirus. Wilke said the department expects to have results back from the CDC in Atlanta by Monday at the latest.

Should the case be confirmed, health officials will begin contact tracing to determine with which individuals he came in contact and whether to monitor them.

Not quite the attitude. A few days ago alerts were placed in a few international airports around the country to screen pax traveling from the infectious areas.

    Yes really.

The same thing happens every time a mutated version of something pops up somewhere. People freak the hell out, thinking it's the next black death.

This doesn't actually appear to be, especially if you're not immunocompromised or elderly. But if so, let's hope that we're able to get ahead of it... until the next inevitable bug.

When they got people isolated in big plastic bags and use robots to care for them I'm saying the jury is still out.

    The suspected cause ;)

"The origin is suspected to be a food market that "conducted illegal transactions of wild animals".

The early cases of this new infection were traced to the South China Seafood Wholesale Market. Live wild animals were also sold including chickens, bats and snakes.

It is a far cry from the usual shopping experience if you are used to your meat nicely cut up and in clear plastic packaging in your typical Western-supermarket."

Practically every article on this new strain explains that it's overwhelmingly the elderly and people with compromised immune systems that need to worry.

This is being blown out of proportion.

You're right, we haven't! China is a world wide problem because they're packed like rats. They are nothing more then a petri dish and incubator for bacteria and Viruses mutation. Open markets, live foul, meats exposed to open air and insect, disgusting food preparation, living condition and lack of quick medical attention allows it "Viruses" to flourish and spread internationally..

And we are setting ourselves up for a real epidemic via our large multicultural cities! Someday, it will present a real and deadly event..

The initial deaths have been largely elderly and immune-compronised people, but not all.

But the coronavirus does not seem to have any immunity to the public at large.

But as more and more areas are overwhelmed from the crush of sick people, those death will increase, both for the coronavirus illness and also the normal illnesses that will be worsened by lack of care, supplies, and to even get a initial medical check.

Already hospitals are being turning away people who have the coronavirus and other illnesses too. This issue has only been a couple weeks. As the illness is spread around the world, do places like the USA are getting supplies for this kind of problem? No. And the USA will not get supplies because it is places like China who produce all of our medical supplies anymore.

America has zero preparedness, our Just In Time system means we have nothing.

If the Communist regime is admitting this is a "problem", then it's an epidemic of gigantic proportions.

I wonder how long it will be before they start firebombing villages.

and there it is, someone had to bring President Trump into this discussion. take your nonsense out with the trash and quit infecting these discussions with your Never Trump attitude. Talk about a sickness. Stow it and stay on topic and quit taking shots at people on this forum.

On Topic: Hopefully they figure it out and get it handled quickly. I did read that it started with markets and eating snakes or bats. Ebola started with monkey meat, as I recall.
