"Ortiz faced criticism for identifying as a black man on lieutenant and captain exams for quicker promotions, and he came to the commission last Friday to defend his actions.

“I’m a black male,” he told commissioners to sneers from the crowd. “Yes I am.”

Ortiz appears white, but he argued race isn’t about appearances.

“I am not Hispanic. I was born in this country,” he said. “That’s how I feel.”"

I have NO real problem with this as 'what goes around comes around' Self-identification is supposed to be a 'good' thing isn't it?

I'm entirely opposed to Affirmative Action. Won't it be funny if lefties gaming their own system are what finally kills off Affirmative Action. Because face it, people only pull these "I'm black" "I'm an indian" stunts because there is something in it for them.... Make everything merit based ---- as it should be ---- and see how many faux blacks and faux Indians we have left.

Since the studies that show white supervisors will frequently hire white candidates even though the minority candidate are clearly superior, we will anxiously await the "merit based system" you advocate actually becomes true to eliminate the "bias" the poor downtrodden white sufferers endure!

LOL! Sorry, Ortiz, but you ain't black OR white...

Ortiz tried to game the system by claiming to be black because it was easier to move up the ladder without merit.

Can’t the Hispanics get there own color?

They are not white, so how did we get stuck with them?

CNN loved identifying George Zimmerman as a white guy. He’s not ours, although I do support the “stand your ground” law in Florida.

Skin color is still important for him, he should not be so keen about it when he suppose to serve the entirety of the populace regardless of superficiality. I think it's correct to for him to be suspended as a sign of a reprimand.

What does his skin color have to do with how well he serves the populous? Are you suggesting identifying as one or another serves more effectively?

Ditto. My first thought was he should don a wig and some lipstick for a better chance at promotion. Say he wants to transition.

Indian, claiming to be the reincarnation of Tecumseh, or something like that, might have worked better.

This particular cop has a long history of very shady /controversial episodes that have a couple of underlying themes, especially race. He needed to go. You simply cannot use him on the street or in the courtroom with that kind of a record and that kind of a reputation. He's been working overtime to push buttons and cause trouble for a long time.

I think the problem is this "identifying as a black man on lieutenant and captain exams for quicker promotions"

promotions should not be dependent on race or gender, as for what he identifies as, who cares and why is that a question on the exams anyways

The best thing for all is not to have to state your race/gender on a written examination period and have outside people review/mark them.
