And burn the cash that has no equivalent value? I wonder if that would happen from the top or from the bottom - it's a rhetorical question.

It's typically a lot easier to 'open' things than it is to 'close' them....

I remember how long it took the GDR to close itself off with a 'wall'... do you? Erinnerungen an Berlin.... Whatever...

Russia will do this, with more overall effectiveness than less -- if Putin can keep opportunistic, badly-paid Russian border guards from taking bribes from the panicked Chinese, who will pay anything simply to get the hell out!

Russian border guards make an entry-level salary of 519 027 ₽ (RUB) annually... about $8155.37 USD, plus a small 'bonus', if they qualify.

That would probably give the border guards the same standard of living as someone making $25,000 a year entry level in the US - and yet it would be much higher than the average Chinese standard of living. I know the N. Koreans paid their government to work in Russia, and considered it paradise compared to China.

As for bribes, Putin has clamped down on them in the higher levels, since it was costing them tax money, but you're right, a sympathetic border guard who can use a little change might reconsider his obligations. Russia wants to stop traffic between the two countries for a while, and probably has the Chinese working in Siberia on lock down. From what I gathered, a lot of Chinese industries have opened in Siberia - thanks to our sanctions, so there is an element of concern.

-And yet Russia because of its size, distances and small isolated populations can quarantine areas easily without affecting its over all economy - even if the epidemic was to hit Moscow or its major port at Vladisvostok. The damage would probably be miniscule compared to other more crowded nations. I'm sure they're working desperately for a vaccine, although they do have medications to fight it. Right now there are two Chinese in Moscow sick with the virus.

India, Japan, Philippines and Pakistan with their large populations are the countries that really should be worried.

I have been wondering how the Russians plan to safeguard Vladivostok, specifically, if things really get crazy in China. I doubt that things will really get badly out of hand, but this is a strangely elusive virus during the first two weeks after a person contracts it, evidently.

I'm sure that very few Chinese would even attempt to make the LONG trek across their country (especially in winter) to try to get out through Mongolia (which is closing its borders, too), or to Kazakhstan -- which is WAY out to the west. They are really hemmed-in by their geography, and it won't be easy to make 'a run for the border', and even if they do, it will be hard to get past that border also. Which makes both North Korea and Vladivostok more 'attractive', I would think, to a Chinese citizen who is willing to do anything to get out.

Me? If I were Chinese? I'd stay in my home, lock my door, do what I'm told, and wait it out. It would be madness to go charging out into the countryside where you can bet there are tens of thousands of Chinese military forces rapidly stirring to make sure that everybody stays put!

I don't know anyone in China to ask.... But, it's only human nature to want to get away from an outbreak of a deadly disease, whether that might involve 'panic' or not.

If they can build islands for military bases, they can turn more of their land into farmland... its obviously just not that important to them.

But on top of everything else, the geography and geology of much of China is an 'unfarmable' MESS. Oh, it's very scenic and quite astonishingly beautiful in many parts... but you sure as hell wouldn't want to try to grow anything to eat in all but a relatively small portion of it. That has been a huge problem for them for about the past 200 years, and it ain't going away....

Watch some clips of Chinese markets and you'll see people slaughtering dogs for food..
rats skewered on kebab sticks...headless snakes about to be cooked....they are all starving
and will eat anything...and most of them work for a bowl of rice a week.....
Sounds like a fun place to be...no wonder they have swine flu...bird flu..bat flu etc...probably
some we haven't even heard of....

Russia has closed its border with China to pedestrian and vehicular traffic but limited trains will operate between Moscow and Beijing. Given the cozy relationship between Russia and China, Putin could not ban Chinese tourists entirely based on their national origin as Trump did. Japan only banned Chinese visitors from Wuhan, the epicenter of the new epidemic where up to 50,000 people are infected with the coronavirus.

Why would they go to Russia if you they don't have relatives, friends here? No place to stay, no job etc.

I don't know but every time I go to Moscow the damn Chinese tourists are all over the place. They're quite rude.

Moscow is a hub for Chinese tourists on their rout to Europe.

Why would Chinese go to Russia? Well... think about it. If these poor people are terrified of catching a deadly virus, they might do anything to try to get themselves and their families away from where it's sickening and killing people. So, it ain't a 'mystery' to me....

    Here, my take:

The mortality rate is falling. Massive follow-up quarantines, travel bans, and border closings are counter-productive and do more harm than good. Stop freaking out.

Don’t take my word—listen to a medical infectious disease expert, and decide for yourself.

Crowding many animals into confined cages in unsanitary conditions and close to human activity as in Chinese markets is the perfect recipe for creating novel viruses that can mutate cross the species barrier. So far, this coronavirus has been far less deadly than SARS was in the early stages. That does not help the people who have died already, mostly elderly or those with compromised immune systems in China but shutting down travel out of Wuhan may be an overreaction that is hurting rather than helping the situation.

From what I am understanding, there is no reason to panic - yet!

I saw a video of a Chinese woman who tried to run past a road block and she was shot in the head. The people were screaming, and it brought the reality of the situation to me. Those poor people, and they don't even have churches to bring them some hope and comfort.

I keep wondering whether there is some kind of nutritional concoction that can somehow increase a person's immunity to the disease. I know that my granddaughter gave someone with a debilitating cold a freshly squeezed organic green drink, and they recovered immediately.

If there is, I'm sure the Japanese will concoct it. Well now's their chance, 30 crew members are sick on one of their cruises - I believe in Hong Kong.

The rumor going around China is that we caused it. This would explain the patriotic singing in Wuhan. Anyway the Russian labs are working on it, and sent them some medications that can cure it.

The problem with China is its system. The government is so concerned with becoming an economic super power, that they have been ignoring the welfare of its own people. Hopefully the US will lay off them long enough, so China can start changing their priorities, rather than hardening them as a reaction to American pressure.

Close all borders and POE until an effective, safe immunization is available worldwide and watch how quickly it comes to market.

I certainly hope that rumor gets squashed -- and FAST!

Xi Jinping is being very strident in his dire warning that this Corona virus would directly impact the very social stability of China. That's very strong stuff! If China really starts experiencing such turmoil that there's uncontrollable chaos and social breakdown, it could LEAD TO WAR. And if they really think that we Americans 'engineered' the virus and turned it loose on them, then we've got the potential for the very most dangerous situation I will have seen in my life since I was a kid in school during the 'Cuban Missile Crisis'. I'm not kidding!
