Why do men like to kill men? At times of war, many men smile in the anticipation of killing another

All the grunts while the ones who profited from wars were safe in their gated communities.

PTSD has been named that in modern times, but one would have to have his head in the sand to think that the phenomena and harm are new to the fighting man.

It explains your point that violent movies are more popular than movies about love. But it is contrary to your OP. Killing is not the epitome of personal drama, One can never truly express the love we have for our children and other loved ones. That is the epitome of personal drama.

Some aren't warriors by nature, others are. Conscription as always been a bad idea.
Let the warriors fight to win.

Biologically, humans are predators. Factor in the extreme intelligence and all the attendant mental problems that come with it and then you have natural killers with mental quirks. What's astonishing is that only some men smile when thinking about killing. Also only some are unhinged psychopaths. Most actually struggle to be good people. Amazing, eh?

Its funny, I was just having this discussion in another thread...

Lethal violence was a part of every day survival throughout most of our evolution. Given that humans excel at that which they enjoy and desire to do, it makes perfect sense that 'survival of the fittest' would genetically predispose many of us to enjoy said violence.

Disclaimer: I'm not suggesting this is an excuse to initiate violence, as humans are capable to restraining their desires. There are outlets available whereby we can satiate this need for violence without hurting eachother. Martial arts, hunting, professional fighting and even electronic simulation (video games) are ways to express these these primitive genetic predispositions in constructive (or at least nondestructive) ways.

Sure, but not near enough if you listen to the U.N and ecologist who say that that is not nearly enough to actually start cleaning up that which is moving us closer to extinction. Note how few, if any country is meeting their pollution reduction numbers or carbon footprint. We are also putting more garbage into our oceans than we are taking out.

    Really.

Why do we have teeth of vegetarian animals instead of predators?

We were not made to be predators, and like our closest primate relatives, should consume a lot less meat.

Their ratio is 95% vegetable while only 5% is animal or meat consumption.

If we had never started cooking our meat to where we can actually chew it, we would not bother with it.

When you've never done it before you want to see what's deep inside, how close you are to your primal, predatory nature, to see if you are truly a good soldier.

Beyond physiological needs man's greatest drive is for power and dominion. And by man I mean male.

You and I do not see our evolution the same way.

We do not default to violence, which is the competition side of evolution.
We default to cooperation because that is the best survival strategy.
There is less of a chance of dying if you make an enemy into your friend than in trying to kill him, which also puts your life in jeopardy.

To default to violence takes indoctrination by either governments or religions. Have you noted that when those entities want to change minds from love or indifference to hate, they start by demonizing the enemy.

Hitler did it to the Jews and we did it with our allies with the Red Plague and Communism, even though Germany was not a true communistic regime. I don't think the world has even seen such a thing as a true communist nation with a flat demographic pyramid.

I just spoke to this imaginary predator notion above.

Bottom line, we are supposed to be vegetarians or close to it, thanks to our teeth and digestive tracks, and those are not found in predatory animals.

I do not mind us having power over nature, we have to have that to some extent to survive, but when we are just fouling it up where we have dominion over nothing sustainable, or just a dead piece of our environment, we are just shooting ourselves in the foot.

I don't think we default to violence either (at least not the vast majority of us), which is why I never proposed as much... I merely said many of us have an evolutionarily inherited genetic predisposition to enjoy violence. We must use our reason, intellect and discipline to channel that enjoyment of -and desire for -violence, lest it lead to destruction.

Cats eat starch products. Anyone thinking that humans are not predators has got no business generating an O.P. on the subject of humans killing humans. Bye!

We are still able to tear flesh from the bone or eat a snake raw with our teeth if we find ourselves suddenly without cutting tools.

The Hollywoodites go to the plastic surgeon for frontal neck jobs to obtain the illusion of making their jawbone protrude more, so they look more like powerful predators.

Everybody is a predator, or a wannabe.

"We should never forget that everything Adolf Hitler did in Germany was “legal” and everything the Hungarian freedom fighters did in Hungary was “illegal.” It was “illegal” to aid and comfort a Jew in Hitler’s Germany. Even so, I am sure that, had I lived in Germany at the time, I would have aided and comforted my Jewish brothers." - Martin Luther King Jr.

I wasn't justifying it, simply describing it as a genetic human male trait. Plus the reference was meant to imply power and dominion over other people. One pediatrician/obstetrician once quipped that a birthed male wants to be Julius Caesar right out of the birth canal.

    Agreed.

In my Socrates mode. I do not mind gladiators facing off and giving a good show, but a contest to the death is a waste of good talent.

I am not sure if there was always duels to the death when the Arenas were first proposed but it sure changed to blood lust over time.

Only those who ignore biology will agree with you.

Our friend above could not find anything to refute what I put and did his poor loser thing.

Sure we can tear meat. Try getting through a thick hide without the cutting teeth that true predators have.

All predators have sharp teeth. We do not.

If I have to say mare, someone is obtuse.

Pliny the Elder (AD 23-79), one of the great historians of the Roman Empire, described the mad rush of spectators into arenas to drink the blood of fallen gladiators.

    https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/guest-blog/blood-lust-the-early-history-of-transfusion/

The people were trying to get more predator and more survivability into themselves by drinking blood.

Man seems to be in the process of evolving from a predator into a gazing animal.

I can still eat frog or snake raw, however. Nobody wants to offer me their live, attached pinky to eat.

Indeed. I blame Freud and Jung's Father Complex for that.

Part of that Complex holds our selfish gene that pushes us to have dominion over others. It is what guides us to either compete or cooperate.

The movies you and I like are violence centered, but there is no lack of romantic comedies.
