Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) attempted to advance the bill on Sunday evening, emphasizing the need to move quickly to help those who have been laid off during the crisis. But Democrats unanimously blocked the measure over its provisions allowing the Trump administration to lend hundreds of billions of dollars to major industries like hotels, casinos, cruise lines, and oil and gas.

Democrats are also unhappy with the portion of the bill aimed at helping distressed industries with at least $450 billion in loans. The massive fund would be controlled by the Treasury Department and could include bailouts to hotels, casinos, cruise lines, and the oil and gas industry. It includes virtually no restrictions on how the money would be distributed...

Another provision in the bill Democrats oppose would allow Mnuchin to delay publicly releasing the names of businesses that receive a bailout, as well as the amounts of those loans, for six months.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) told reporters. “We’re here to help workers, we’re here to help hospitals. And right now what the Republicans proposed does neither of those.” [source]

Several portions of the proposed bill should be a non-starter. Cruise lines are one industry that meed to go to the nation they are flagged under instead of demanding money from a nation they do not pay taxes to or abide by our laws. Also why are we bailing out industry that was in decline prior to the pandemic and not placing any requirements on these loans — for instance Airlines could have weathered this coming recession had they not spent huge sums of money buying back their own stock.

What is it with this administrations / Republicans desire to hide everything? First we had tax returns, recently we have had unemployment figures and now they want to hide who receives bailout money? Strange from a party that demanded transparency less than 4 years ago...

Airlines need to buy back their stock because they are easy targets for hostile takeovers and raids. Recall what happened to Eastern and TWA. Raiders came in and stole all of the money and drove them out of business.

Businesses have costs aside from payroll. As much as folks need money while they're prevented from working, they also need a job to go back to once its over. If we just let these businesses fold during the crisis, the economy will not be able to recover from the virus.

To be fair, the bill also sounds like it needs some retooling. I agree we shouldn't be paying cruise lines baaed in other nations, if thats really in there. But now is not the time to try to make oil and gas industry cuts. They employ people who will eventually need to go back to work.

The Democrats threw the working man under the bus. Why would anyone vote for any of them in November?

Obviously it IS A Corporate Bailout.

Trump is trying to keep the FatCats (that pull his strings) happy.

Any money given to Bail Out Corporations needs to be specifically "earmarked" in advance.

Totally LMAO at the notion of a Mnuchin "Slush Fund".

If McConnell actually CARES about America, I have some advice:

    Let's get it DONE.

Just give Nancy whatever she wants, and make a deal.

C'Mon Mitch--Quit Screwing Over the American People (and get a deal done).

    Best of Luck.

Democrats have always coveted power and control much more than caring about Americans.

It seems that Darwin has shifted the balance of power in the Senate already. Republicans weren't taking this seriously. They were mocking it. Even yesterday Rand Paul was in the Gym; and he attended a rather intimate lunch with other Senators, even knowing he had been exposed and was waiting for his test result.

Now they are paying the price for their stupidity and foolishness and the Dems have a lot more power.

I wonder if this is just a hint of what is to come in November. There have been a lot of people mocking this for two months. How much will that cost the Republicans? How many people will they lose?

Don't forget Mar a Lago and CPAC.

Do you really not see the contradiction in your post?

Giving 'Nancy whatever she wants' is not 'making a deal.'

Until the GOP has at least 51 senators who can show up to vote, no more Trump judicial and/or cabinet nominations are going anywhere, and anything that passes will have to be truly bipartisan. Thanks Ayn Rand cultists/fools! :applause:

It seems that you want to give trump and Moscow Mitch free rein to steal as much money as their greedy hearts desire while they starve the average American citizen.

It's no time for bickering, just make a deal where everyone is more happy than not, so we can focus on the actual problem.

Let’s allow the airlines to go out of business. We don’t need an airline industry. They’re being phased out (along with cows) in 10 years anyway.

Who is talking about letting them go out of business?
Do you believe there should be restrictions and requirements for any loans they are given?
Should they be able to remain anonymous for the next six months?

You answered exactly zero of the three questions I asked — bravo — your statement leads to another question; what “pork” does House Majority Leader Pelosi want included?
Maybe try to answer directly instead of obfuscating.

Democrats would rather crush the American people than ever side with the President on what is needed! At least they are consistent in never caring for the people of this country! Sad, but true!!

From the Bill that the Republican presented .......... it's obvious that they are taking care of their wealthy donors again.

Thank Goodness the working people have the Dems standing up for them

any thread based on a huff post article really isnt a thread. it's just arguing about a partisan hit piece.

I'll wait until a legit source arrives, or if i get really drunk later today, I'll counter with a Breitbart article just to stir the pot.

IF that is the ONLY way to get a "Deal done", what choice does McConnell have?

Give her what she wants and get on with it.

McConnell apparently wants the Markets to crash again (today)?

The Republicans have a perfectly good bill to save essential industries and the Dems walked away. They’ve got their own bill to save the abortion mills.
