Spain has reported +434 new deaths today. Whether they were yesterday and are being reported now, or all happened this morning, I do not know. But either way, it is a horrifying number.

Italy has Universal Healthcare and they have a fraction of our ventilators, as even Biden pointed out.

Utterly irrelevant to what I actually posted.

    March 23rd, 2020 - interim report:

    2020-03-023 COVID-19 interim.png

So, there are about 8 hours left in this day and already, without figures from either Italy or France, we have +22,008 new cases and already +814 newly reported deaths. If past = present, then I expect a horrifying report out of Italy, because things are expected to get worse before they get better. Also, Portugal is Spain's neighbor: similar demographics, similar geography. It's only a matter of time before Spain's suffering seeps over to Portugal. Plus, the numbers from the USA are reported in a drip-drip fashion all day long.

Here the current list of nations - I highlighted some that I think we should all be watching:

    2020-03-023 COVID-19 interim 002.png 2020-03-023 COVID-19 interim 003.png

Just look at the huge number of newly reported COVID-19 cases in Switzerland, just in one day. Percentually, that is huge. Switzerland, although it has a decidely smaller population than Italy or France, may end up suffering horribly.

Also, a number of the words largest nations (in terms of population) are still posting small numbers, but I suspect that is going to change very soon. India now almost has the same population as China: China has 1.4 billion, India has 1.3 billion these days. India has declared a national emergency over COVID and yet, we are hardly seeing any COVID cases. I mentioned Indonesia yesterday, with 220 million residents. The Phillipines has half as many residents, but both are in a temperate zone of the planet, where the virus may never die down. A lot of people have not yet thought about this aspect of it all.

Ireland, Pakistan and Luxembourg are poised to cross over the 1,000 mark in reported cases.

No it isn't, why do we need a system that is failing in Italy?

The healthcare systems of nearly every country around the world is being taxed to their limits, including America. This is not the thread to discuss the merits of different healthcare systems.

Yeah, the situation in Italy is pretty scary. Hopefully the US has learned a lesson from what is going on there and people are taking much better precautions here regardless of whether or not there are lockdowns.

As for the serious / critical rate, I did start tracking that back on Mar 18 for the few countries that appeared to actually be updating it. There is a high degree of disparity between them which I assume has to do with reporting standards for what is a case and what is a serious case. But here is what I have for now (all are serious / critical as a percent of active cases):

    China - 31-34%
    France - 11-13%
    Norway - 7-10%
    Italy - 6-8%
    Spain - 6-7%

You can make of that what you will. Italy is the only one I have data going back to Feb 24, and they clearly have been updating the value daily since Mar 2. But I have no idea how they classify "active cases" or "serious / critical" vs other nations. I'm pretty sure I read something about people being hospitalized but unless they were in ICU they were not classified as serious / critical (forget which nation), which makes this data of dubious utility for trying to calculate hospital overload outside of maybe ventilator #'s.

The thing I find most worrisome about your screenshot is that noticeable upward trajectory of the "death growth rate".

Another brutal number, but lower new cases than yesterday. The last time they posted less than 5,000 was Mar 18. Today is also 14 days since the national lockdown. China's new cases per day peaked almost exactly 2 weeks after lockdown as well. Hopefully this is a sign that Italy's measures are finally starting to pay off and we will see a continued decline in new cases to relieve the pressure on their hospitals.

~ Look at what France is discovering about stopping this virus. The hdroxychloriquine and zithromycin therapy will likely be a game-changer here and needs to be used to treat Covid-19 right away. A vaccine may not even be necessary if the proper medications are successful - as they are in the French experiment.

were not taxed to the limits, yet. that likely is coming, I assume plans continue to move or cancel non essential procedures back in preparation. relocation of non critical services as well, needs to be a team effort, city and state level.

No it isn't, your advocating a system that has nowhere near the ventilators we have, how would that be an answer to anything?

This is not the thread to bicker over healthcare systems. This is about disseminating non-partisan factual information.

As a follow to this post, I found this resource today. They track all of the tests being reported by each State (note: Not all States report negative tests and some states do not disclose the number of people hospitalized).
