Just watching President Trump's news conference and I am not sure the President gets what most of America thinks that Congress and the President should get which is that it is the Federal government solely not the state governments responsibility to provide the extraordinary levels of personal protection equipment, testing supplies and medical equipment, etc. the entirety of America will need during an epidemic or pandemic. It is one thing to expect the states to try to get these things as best they can because the nation was caught unprepared to handle a pandemic and so the Federal government cannot come through states have to be creative to find a way to help meet their citizens needs; and saying the Country was caught unprepared that isn't any individual's fault America for decades should have required "domestic" industries for these items with the manufacturers having back-up equipment and supplies so it could ramp up production to handle a pandemic hitting America. It is important that the President understand that it is the Federal government and alone the Federal government's duty to get these medical supplies the American people need.

Some of the numbers of the medical items that individual states claim they need are probably inflated and it is understandable any administrator of a health care facility is not going to only want an inventory of these things that will last a week they are going to want to have several weeks or more of inventory and unfortunately FEMA only has the inventory to meet hot spots immediate needs. Plus, the American public hears states saying they need ten thousand ventilators and then the public learns there is only five thousand patients in that state's ICUs on ventilators so the criticism of the Federal government on some issues may be overdone. It is important that the President of the United States understand that it is the Federal government's duty not the states duty to get these medical supplies that the American people across America need because if he doesn't understand this duty upon him he will not use the full force of his power given to him by the Defense Production Act. There is one needed item I think he could be taking off the table within three weeks by using the Act; this being the N95 masks the days where nurses and doctors are given one mask at the beginning of their shift and are told that will have to carry you through the entirety of your shift should be ending very soon. The President should use the Defense Production Act to go into the company 3M and copy all their blue prints for the molds, presses and materials and manufacturing procedures they use to manufacture the N95 masks and commandeer a handful of other American businesses manufacturing facilities that have the wherewithal to utilize these blue prints and procedures to produce these masks and order these other businesses to produce these masks, telling them the Federal Government will pay their costs; I am confident that in three to four weeks America would be seeing Niagara Falls production levels of these N95 masks!

It's not the Federal government's job. New Yorkers need to get their supplies from New York. The Federal stockpile is for Americans not New Yorkers.

    Who thinks that?
Obama in 2009 drew down 75% of the Federal N95 stock and never replenished it. That is why we got caught so short on masks. The Deep State that was so invested in lying about the President over their fabled "Russian Collusion" and then "Ukrainian Collusion" should have been keeping tabs on the N95 federal stockpile.
FASTER, PLEASE: Facing Trump’s wrath, 3M vows boosted mask production for US.

These bastards pulled back un-shipped stock from suppliers and put them out to global bid, shipping them to foreigners. As soon as word of this got to Trump, he put a stop to it.

The FDA also put silly restrictions on mask disinfecting, once Trump learned of it, he had that lifted in a weekend.

He doesn't use his DPA recklessly, but he has invoked it where necessary

You really wouldn't want the federal government in charge this. They are not equipped for it and would end up taking a ham fisted approach. Having the states handle this is more efficient and effective.

Are New York citizens no longer Americans or is that title saved for the vast unwashed and uneducated masses in flyover states?

Of course they are Americans. The problem would that the federal government would need to prepare for every state and supplies that are now going to New York would get diverted across the country whether they had immediate need or not. That's how a centralized approach works...

Fair enough, what I understood it to mean was no citizens could be prioritized over others and that would cause more damage...

    That caveat was not indicated.

Do you believe the federal government should be bidding against the states — driving up the costs of items by as much as 15 times — especially after saying the states need to be responsible for their citizens?

When did we go from the United States to the Separate States?

I'm undecided on that matter. Everyone has need and supplies are limited. Not a lot of good options...

There, their is the possessive of they.

And no, that isn’t what NY is doing — it has actually been one of the more responsive State governments to date while republicans are largely ignoring it and becoming the new flash points for viral infection. I wonder what will happen when those states begin reaching out to the federal government? If bias is shown I hope a criminal investigation is opened for each death placed directly at the individuals responsible for denying or delaying care.

Why does the federal government need it if the states should have to care for their own citizens?

The federal government employs millions of people and many of their agencies are essential for the country to function at all...

And they have the largest stockpile of these items already in the Strategic National Stockpile that was — prior to April 03 — to make sure that US citizens in need got these materials. It has since been changed to “supplement state and local supplies during public health emergencies. Many states have products stockpiled, as well. The supplies, medicines, and devices for life-saving care contained in the stockpile can be used as a short-term stopgap buffer when the immediate supply of adequate amounts of these materials may not be immediately available” after trumps son in law changed it’s function.

You obviously don’t as you followed up with a sentence fragment.

Also please don’t edit down my posts to avoid addressing it — that is the hallmark of “I have nothing to say but still want to insert my unfounded opinion”. Self respect will take you a long way.

Trump modified the government website describing the use of the stockpile just like he changed his weather map

if the facts do not support Trump, he just creates his own reality

    You misspelled “think”

    Less than you apparently

Yes, that is how the forum functions.
Doesn’t make the tactic any less derisive however.

Several Democrat states have issued orders to forcefully seize medical equipment and supplies from those who have them and whom "authorities" decide don't need them.

    https://www.theepochtimes.com/nj-go...e-to-seize-ventilators-and-masks_3297267.html

Now let me ask you a question.......

If you were a manufacturer or distributor, and you dealt in a commodity LIKELY to be confiscated at every emergency.......how likely would you be to continue manufacturing or dealing in that particular commodity?
If it were me, I'd get out of that business as fast as possible and move to production or distribution of items NOT likely to be confiscated at some "authorities" whim.

As always, the absolute ignorance of many on the left to understand how supply and demand works is astonishing.

The result of this will be that FAR less ventilators and urgently needed medical supplies will be available next go round.

Capitalism may not always foster the kindest most generous people, but it ALWAYS fosters an abundant supply chain and availability of essentials. Choose.
