Someone mentioned that of every five people who go on a ventilator only one is alive when the ventilators are removed. Science presently has very little to offer people in this pandemic.

Everybody I know is losing money. Some will probably lose their homes before this is over.

It is the season of death almost unopposed despite the tremendous effort and sacrifice to stem the tide.

Somebody always grows rich in every crisis. Like Joe Kennedy did. Surely there will be many new millionaires and richer billionaires. That's the way it always goes.

I'll be content just to come through with life and health intact.

Everybody I know is losing money, me too. Some will probably lose their homes

I suppose we could all just ignore our finances and when we have nothing left, we can all become wards of the state. I'm still waiting on a list of acceptable topics so that my future postings won't offend you.

That's a pertinent point. Some lovely stories of landlords cancelling rent demands. Of course there is also already data of increased evictions as we get to appreciate the consequences of right wing economics.

Yes it is arguable that capitalism should just cease and desist in order that the pandemic can just run free. I don't believe the psychotic behavior that we are seeing is really buffoonery. I believe many of the world leaders are scared and have built up these delusions of total elimination of mankind. (The science side). The sad side is, the leaders who have the power, are listening to the voices of fear and doom and have exasperated the problem. Psychotic behavior? Yes, by some. Buffoonery? Not really. It's not fake. They really are that way.

Trump was right when he said that he thinks "the cure may be worse than the problem". That scene is playing out now all over the world. It will be the leaders of capitalism that will step forward and bring some since of order to things. (Gates Foundation, Roche, Abbott Labs, 3M, Honeywell and thousands of others. These are the money people) Today the fight is being carried on by the dedicated medical profession and all those who are working under strenuous circumstances.

Came straight from Chomsky, though he's much nicer and refers to sociopathic.

Trump wasn't right. By ignoring the problem until its too late, he ensured that more aggressive action would be required. He didn't learn from the likes of South Korea. Instead they pandered to a lawyer pretending to be an economist pretending to be a scientist, all out of ideological convenience.

I said Trump was right when he said " the cure may be worse than the pandemic". Unfortunately and reluctantly he caved on some of the recommendations of his advisors. As far as the virus goes it is that old adage GIGO (Garbage in Garbage out). China fed the world a bag full of bad garbage. WHO didn't
come out with anything concrete until mid January. The leftist media and the Democrat party were so caught up in impeachment of Trump that they relentlessly kept accusing him of racism whenever he made the decisions to close the borders to certain countries.

Using a small country like South Korea , which is right next door to China, as a shining example is not even a fair statement. The US and many EU countries do much more trade and business with China than South Korea which is considered an enemy. Therefore the opportunity for spreading the virus was much greater for countries that were more involved in visiting China. It is also very possible that South Korea had more information through the whisper underground than the West did. It always amazes me how many people on this forum, who do not live here, seem to have the most negative input
about how we run our government.

Items 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 what was important to Republicans. (neo-liberals you might call them)

Items 6, 7, & 8 really caught my eye. Democrats just cannot resist getting their pork while the nation is in crisis. (Pelosism)

Have you lost your money or have you lost part of your profits? Until the day you cash out it is an investment. If you are not retiring soon it is not that big of a deal, sucks yes but the worm will turn.

Let's not play party games. Stimulus, unless its focused on basic income guarantee and increased generosity with application of wealth tax, will benefit the rich more. In neoliberal countries, where market fundamentalism runs amok, the wealth grab is already on!

Why should the workers in society supply the non-workers in society a guaranteed income? Too each his own talent. When I look around the richest people are actors and actresses who pretend they are someone else. (Some of the best con artist's in the world.) Politicians who sit around and use their oral skills to persuade other politicians to do their bidding. (Sort of like a cad at the pub convincing the whore she should go home with him instead of the other bloke.) Sports personal who receive atrocious amounts of money to play games that they learned to play as children and could never give it up. Nobility, who have convinced the common man that they should support their life style because they are good cheerleaders for the country. The common man does it because the nobility is good tabloid reading. The majority of these people are liberal-liberals and their greatest hunger is to be seen and revered. They bring nothing to the table, and yet, they are the loudest voices against capitalism and the job producing large and small businesses.

They rely on the ignorance of the masses to fund their Performing Arts Centers, stadiums and fields, Castles and lavish homes. They are the first with their hands out for the perks of their trade. They are skilled at diverting their excesses by using the media to convince the lowers that it is the corporations and the banks and any other group that may have wealth that they are not doing their fair share.

I receive requests all the time for monies to support politicians, museums, theaters even to send a child to a sports camp. I then think to myself why should I when I have a stack of requests from the police, fire-fighters, hospitals, schools etc. Isn't that where my tax dollars should really be going? Who's worth more a actor who plays the part of a teacher or a teacher. An actress who plays the part of a nurse or a hospital who has real nurses helping real people.

Why have a minimum income guarantee? It's just basic rationality. Now we know that the right wing have flirted with the idea, with Friedman pitching the similar Negative Income Tax. Integration of tax and benefit systems can eliminate poverty and unemployment traps. They also reduce bureaucracy. But, given Covid-19, there is even more rationale here. First, market fundamentalism feeds low wages and high debt. People find lockdown particularly painful. Many will be forced to work and will spread the virus. Second, this is ultimately about ensuring that everyone benefits from any stimulus. This is particularly important as we already know that the death rate among the poor is much higher. Both efficiency and equity criteria therefore support twinning of wealth tax with income guarantee.
