Price Prospero thought he could escape from the plague in The Masque of The Red Death.. I say why try to hide? A real plague is almost inevitable... if not now later. It won't hurt to take every precaution you think necessary. And ya... don't cough on anybody.

    NO NEW CASES IN CHINA

From the NYT here: China Hits a Coronavirus Milestone: No New Local Infections

    Excerpt:

I live in France. We are in lock-down.

Nobody is moving from their house, and if they do move, they need to show a document (aka "passport") that they downloaded from a French government site that asks simply for one to stipulate why they are driving their car and they sign-the-document. (Good reasons are: Food, see a doctor, etc.)

If they have no good reason for traveling, the fine is $150.

Well, we have flattened the curve. The cost? At a minimum, 20 plus years of stagnation; potentially, a Great Depression, or much worse.

It would have been better if Trump had used his reason as his guiding light instead of his nationalist pragmatism. The proper response, then and now, is massive testing, isolation, quarantine, not Trump's and the governors' lockdown of the living, not the theft of the productive energy of future generations to pay for the lockdown, but a return to the principles of free-market and Individual Rights. The lockdowns are a hysterical response spurred on by irresponsible government thugs.

These many deaths were not necessary, the destruction of the economy was not necessary, and the cause of the whole catastrophe was not the virus, it was the foolishness of Americans insisting that free health care is a right, and demanding the government force the rich to pay for it. They surrendered their reason to a delusion. They will be paying for it for a long, long, time. Ventilators, PPEs, hand sanitizers, and masks don't appear by magic, they need to be created by capitalists seeking to make money--it's the selfish capitalist we need to solve this problem, not the altruistic government thugs.

A free-market system would have handled this much, much better. I submit a free-market system would have had a cure and vaccine long before the virus become so virulent.

Substitute today’s Healthcare System for Yesteryear’s Railroads and you will discover the why of how a puny virus created an economic catastrophe. Government interference.

    Exactly:

We have already flattened the curve
We have gone from predictions of millions of deaths, to hundreds of thousands and now we are predicting about 60 thousand deaths. This is with over reporting of death.Dr. Birx admitted the attribution of death to COVID-19 has been liberal (her word). If the death count were limited to deaths directly caused by COVID-19, it would likely be even lower than this.”

I doubt very much there is going to be a Great Depression 2.

Most economies are/were very strong up to the onset of Covid-19. There is no reason whatsoever that they should not rebound. Consumer Demand does not nosedive into hell even for the worst of reasons. However, there is indeed, very different means between the US and Europe in what governments are doing to maintain Demand. One of which is to compensate citizens for the loss of revenues - thus allowing them somewhat of a relief once the wait-time is over and they can get back to work.

We shall see or not if their jobs shall still be there. Why should Demand for goods/services wither away? People still have to eat and live. Demand did not go away. It just became very subdued and there is no reason why it should not spring back ...

    Quite so.
And guess what: the US has offered more than DOUBLE that of the EU in supporting "demand" , for its unemployed workforce ie ability to buy food and pay rent.

"European authorities are increasing efforts to try to stave off the economic effects of coronavirus.
The European Union (EU) will put a package of measures in place including a €37bn euro (£33bn) investment initiative".

ie peanuts, in comparison the $2 trillion US rescue package.

That's why EU nations are already looking at opening their economies; people will starve if they don't work.

You forget about the difference between 'demand' and effective demand. The latter depends on people having money to spend.
