    What are you asking?

And government funding has decreased when adjusted for inflation.

I'm asking how is socialism or socialist policies a solution?

I'm not sure what the exact number is for government funding of colleges and universities. I do know it goes up every year.

What do you mean by socialism? Like having the state be responsible for higher education?

And it goes up yes, but after funding was severely cut, so when the money they get comes in, it's less than what they had prior to the cuts.

Public universities and government assistance are why costs for higher education are astronomically high. The universities can simply continue raising their rates and have no incentive to lower them because they know the government is going to pay it through things like pell grants. If pell grants didn’t exist universities would be forced to lower tuition and costs for materials such as books in order to compete because people wouldn’t be able to afford it on their own. But as it is they don’t have to because they know no matter how much they increase the cost of attending college, the government is going to pay it.

If the government is paying the cost of tuition, housing, etc, why would the government want to keep paying that when they could be spending that money elsewhere? Wouldn't the government want to keep costs down as well in order to not pay their fair share? It's the concept of free sharing for public education but applied to universities.

Most university budgets are funded by government appropriations, and that number goes up every year.

Have you been paying attention to the government and how wasteful they are with our money? If not I can provide you with a plethora of sources.

True, but this isn't really a question about wastefulness, although it's important. You're talking about a bad system that is already essentially socialist, and the solution is more socialism I guess?

And how much of that adjusted for inflation compares to prior spending cuts?

Yeah, I know. Not particularly wasteful when you understand why the funding is the way it is.

And the reason they do so is because it gives them justification for taking more tax dollars from the American people.

No the solution is to stop giving away our money to people who should be paying their own way through college.

You don’t have a problem with getting taxed more and getting essentially nothing for it? I sure do.

You forget getting taxed more doesn't mean you lose more money. It's the same reason why the government invests in the economy. It's to make things cheaper for people to buy. Also I pay taxes and student loans so if I didn't have to pay student loans without end then I would be okay with that.

You have that backwards. You pay student loans WITH an end. You pay taxes without end

I have to pay off interest rates first before the principal. This is actually a pretty serious problem that's slowing down the economy.

Yeah. That’s how loans work. You get charged interest every month. Should they just let you borrow for free with no interest? Would you let people borrow money as a business and not charge interest? If you did you’d go out of business real fast.

Yeah pretty much, that's actually one of the government loans undergrads qualify for.

Most state supported colleges are too expensive even for instate students, not to speak of the extra high tuition's for out of stater's.

I agree with this. Right now the government provides student loans based on need and cares little about the student's ability to pay back the loans or the benefit their degree brings to society.

The harsh reality is, not all degrees are created equal. I'm more than happy for my tax dollars to go toward future doctors and nurses because we need those. But there are many degrees that do not increase a student's earning power after college. Giving money to students who likely won't be able to pay back their loans is a poor investment strategy on the part of the government. I'm sure most elected officials have good intentions, but they need to admit when something isn't working and try something else.

So the government runs the school and setting the prices, then the same government turns around and gives loans that kids can't afford to attend those schools.
    Totally stupid and corrupt.

I don't know the numbers. You brought them up. All I know is it has zero to do with what I'm asking.

That's neither here nor there. I'm unsure how a politician like Bernie Sanders can say unequal access to government institutions is an indictment of capitalism.

It's an indictment of socialists institutions.

Public schools clearly comes under the heading of government controlled means of production.
