Why was the 2009 pandemic not taken ANYWHERE NEAR as seriously as COVID-19?

Covid has killed almost 20,000 out of 500,000 infected, and its just getting into the swing of things, even with major quaratine measures. The daily death rate from covid has risen from 1,000 last week to 2,000, and is going to continue to rise. In the best case scenario, covid kills 100,000 to 200,000 people. In the worst, it kills over 1 million.
