I never said it wasn't important. I said it wasn't as important as unification, for the reasons you stayed.

Lincoln did believe in freeing the slaves as far back as when he was a Whig as he and another .. senator Introduced a motion within the party to support absolishing slave ownership but withdrew it over party concerns.

Also the 13th wasn't ratified by all states at the time. A few held out. I think Kentucky or another state didn't technically ratify it until the 80s or 90s.

Anyway, the overarching point is that it's not nearly as black and white (heh) as we look back on it.

In fact, the KKK and neo-Nazis almost always support any Democrat over any Republican for rather obvious reasons.

“You Don’t Want to Live With Them Either” 1973

"From 2011 to 2016, Trump was the leading proponent of the already-debunked "Birtherism" conspiracy theory that President Barack Obama was not born in the United States."

Trump continued to insist, as late as 2019,[13][14] that a group of black and Latino teenagers were guilty of the 1989 rape of a white woman in the Central Park jogger case, despite the fact that the five had been officially exonerated in 2002, based on a confession by an imprisoned serial rapist that was confirmed by DNA"

"They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists." About Mexicans...

"very fine people on both sides", suggested a moral equivalence between the white supremacist marchers and those who protested against them at Charlottesville

"Trump tweeted about Democratic congresswomen of color: "Why don't they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done."

"Trump criticized Judge Gonzalo P. Curiel who oversaw those two cases, alleging bias in his rulings because of his Mexican heritage.[73][74] Trump said that Curiel would have "an absolute conflict" due to his Mexican heritage"

More at the link, but he built his political base using Birtherism; which was a blatant and bluntly racist lie.

Many within the progressive movement have always been attracted to racist policies directed toward ethnic cleansing and ultimately genocide. The targets of this institutional racism in America and for the DP has always been black Americans and Hispanics. Minorities are the most vulnerable targets, but the kind of self loathing nihilism that sustains totalitarian movements eventually turns on itself and humanity as a whole.

"Nobody knew it in January, but within months, the new coronavirus would sweep the United States, killing tens of thousands of people, a disproportionately high number of them black and diabetic. They were at a disadvantage, put at risk by an array of factors, from unequal health care access to racist biases to cuts in public health funding. These elements have long driven disparities, particularly across the South. One of the clearest ways to see them is by tracking who suffers diabetic amputations, which are, by one measure, the most preventable surgery in the country."

So race is no longer a social construct, but rather a Biden construct. Is Biden going to start defining our gender for us next?

    You have been disinformed.
American white racists almost always support any Democrat over any Republican politician.

    Tom Metzger
    Who:
    Director, White Aryan Resistance
    Likes: White people, karaoke, environmentalists
Dislikes: Race-mixing, Jews, the federal government, capitalism
Career Highlights: Was Grand Dragon of Ku Klux Klan in the 70s; won the Democratic primary during his bid for Congress in 1980; appeared on the episode of Geraldo Rivera's show in 1988 when Rivera's nose was broken in a brawl.

"The corporations are running things now, so it's not going to make much difference who's in there, but McCain would be much worse. He's a warmonger. He's a scary, scary person--more dangerous than Bush. Obama, according to his book, Dreams Of My Father, is a racist and I have no problem with black racists. I've got the quote right here: 'I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's white race.' The problem with Obama is he's being dishonest about his racial views. I'd respect him if he'd just come out and say, 'Yeah, I'm a black racist.' I don't hate black people. I just think it's in the best interest of the races to be separated as much as possible. See, I'm a leftist. I'm not a rightist. I hate the transnational corporations far more than any black person."

Race is a social construct... until we need to have a conversation about how white people are "problematic" or "privileged".

You are mistaken. National Socialism and other race theory fanatics attached themselves to progressive movement early on. Hitler and Mussolini were very popular with many leftist thinkers until Hitler broke the Hitler/Stalin Pact and invaded the USSR.

In fact, even today American White racists almost always reject any Republican in favor of any Democrat.

    Erich Gliebe
    Who:
    Chairman, National Alliance
Likes: Third Reich, the movie Rocky
    Dislikes: Integration, Jewish-controlled media
Career Highlights: Turning white-power record label, Resistance Records, into a million-dollar-a-year business juggernaut; an 8-0 record as a professional boxer under the nickname, "The Aryan Barbarian."

"Obama might be a better candidate for our cause because he's racially conscious. One of our big things in the National Alliance is to raise the racial consciousness of our people. Young whites in universities, they've been stripped of any kind of racial identity. Obama may be a racist in a positive sense for his people--that will awaken a lot of the whites, knock some sense into them. They'll see that non-white Americans are allowed to be proud of who they are, to be racially conscious, to talk about their people or their community without being attacked as being racist. Let's face it, white people aren't going to fight for their causes, for their kind with a white president. I don't think McCain even acknowledges that a white race exists. He's all about granting amnesty to illegal aliens. The fact he wants to keep us in wars in the Middle East for 100 years, that's not a good thing. I give Obama credit, he seems to have stuck to his guns as far as pulling the troops out of Iraq. He's a very intelligent man, an excellent speaker and has charisma. John McCain offers none of that. Perhaps the best thing for the white race is to have a black president. My only problem with Obama is perhaps he's not black enough.””

The birtherism originated from the Clinton campaign

Trump later said: "I'm not talking about the neo-Nazis and the white nationalists, because they should be condemned totally".[143][144]

    Nice try cherry picking

Actually, it was started by Andy Martin in 2004. Some Hillary supporters did use it, but that was a drop in the ocean compared to what came later from Trump and the racist Right.

Trump tried to walk away from his Charlottesville comments, but as I just pointed out, he has some serious history going back almost half a century.

    Nice try white washing...
