So Medicare would pay 80 percent of the negotiated charges, and BC/BS would chip in with an additional five percent (bringing the total to 85 percent--exactly what BC/BS pays without Medicare).

If I were to have a "severe illness," I would pay up to $2,000.00. (That is the annual out-of-pocket cap with BC/BS.)

And that, of course, is all doctors' fees (the 15 percent of the negotiated amount that BC/BS does not pay.) (The hospital itself is paid 100 percent by BC/BS.)

Medicare pays 80% and your supplemental pays 20% of what is left.

I wonder sometimes if Trump shouldn't be looked upon with the same partial sympathy we sometimes feel for addicts who have whole corps of enablers. Would he really be this bad of a President if the people surrounding him would say and do more to rein him in?

Blue Cross/Blue Shield is not considered a "supplemental" policy--i.e. a Medigap policy (such as my wife has).

I ran into this in the latter part of the 1980s. My employer, at the time, offered Aetna healthcare insurance; and I initially took it.

However, I soon noticed that no greater portion of the medical bills was being paid than had been paid when I had BC/BS alone.

I found out that this is just not how healthcare insurance works.

Huh ? What is left is 20%.......20% of 20% is 4%. So your supplement only pays 4% of the total bill ?

BCBS paid 80% and the rest was on me back in the day.

It may have something to do with the fact that this is Federal BC/BS that it pays 85 percent. (Actually, until just a few years ago, it paid 90 percent of the negotiated price. I suppose that I have been spoiled; 85 percent now seems like a pittance.)
