Black man who called out 'I can't breathe' while being restrained by Tacoma police died from oxygen deprivation, report finds

A black man in Tacoma, Washington, who called out "I can’t breathe" while being restrained by police died as a result of oxygen deprivation, according to a medical examiner’s report released Wednesday.

Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office concluded that the death of Manuel Ellis, a 33-year-old father of two, in March, was a homicide. Ellis had drugs in his system and was suffering from heart disease but the medical examiner determined he died of respiratory arrest due to hypoxia caused by physical restraint.

Tacoma is a very liberal progressive area.
Could it be possible that maybe, just maybe, this type of thing is just prone to happen sometimes when police have to use restraints on a suspect who is fighting and not cooperating?

There are clear similarities here to that of George Floyd in Minneapolis. (drugs in his system, possible underlying medical issues)

    Conversely,

Could it be possible that maybe, just maybe, there are more dangerous, out of control people wearing badges than there should be?
Are you suggesting that liberals are kinder, better people than conservatives or that it's not possible to have bad cops everywhere?.

Too many PEOPLE are dying in police custody. it just so happens they keep turning up to be black.

Finally, Conspiracy theory....someone or some group is deliberately trying to split the nation?

I am white, and I have almost been killed many times by cops. I have been framed, and fought, with Kamala Harris' help, to bring them to justice. There are BAD cops. I have had cops lie, and bust in my home. I have had 30 cops with guns trained on me and my mates.

Had I been black, I would be dead.

    Another conspiracy theory thought:
Could it at all be possible police are intentionally injecting drugs into these victim's bodies, after the fact, to make the suspects look bad?

Which would help make them look less to blame for the victim's death.

ABSOLUTELY NOT, as during stop and frisk, blacks had LESS drugs on them than whites did. Sure you can claim that blacks were scared to have drugs on them, still doesnt change the fact that MOST cops didnt plant. That usually happens in the south, you know, red states.

Could this be a police training issue? It can't all be racism. It must be to a certain extent poor police practices.

I have had it with TRAINING. Most cops that are convicted acted opposed to their training. WE need to WEED out losers, with psychological testing.

I had a friend, that used to gay bash, steal, lie you name it, and when he got out of the Marines, he applied for cop. They weeded him out, thankfully. He was ALWAYS bad, and no amount of good training would make him a good human.

ALSO, we MUST start testing cops for steroids.

Thousands and thousands of blood chokes are applied in martial arts studios, every day, and no one dies of hypoxia. Maybe these officers are improperly trained on it, or they may be deliberately misusing it. We should know more when the investigation is concluded.

Well ideally 1 is more than there "should be" but its not ever something we could objectively assess so we look elsewhere. Controversy seems to be around the knee-to-neck maneuver but there's a reason why restraining methods have to be used. Suspects often resist, and they often resist violently, and it happens countless thousands of times a day, and police have to control suspects less escalation lead to a use of deadly force. That's the thing these BLM people don't seem to understand. They're crying about "non-violent deescalation" when physical restraints are exactly that. Sure things might go bad that in a super rare instance, but its working far far far far FAR many more times greater than it it not.

Could it be possible that citizens shouldn't be criminals? Maybe the criminals need some training - stop doing stupid ****. Good grief - isn't that where it all starts? This society is getting sick in the head, we glorify the criminals and denounce those who protect us from them. Yep, go ahead Tacoma, let's burn the MF to the ground! May as well kill some law-abiding taxpayers while you are at it.

    From the article:
Ellis, 33, was walking in the intersection of 96th Street and South Ainsworth Avenue late on March 3, when four officers notice him “struggling,” according to Pierce County Sheriff’s detective Ed Troyer.

“He was having distress in the intersection, they asked him if he was alright and needed help," Troyer told
Q13 News. "He walked up to the Tacoma Police Officers and said, 'I have warrants, I need to talk.' As soon as the police officer got out of the car, he assaulted one of them and slam dunked him into the ground."

Ellis was handcuffed and restrained at the scene. He was still breathing when paramedics arrived and was removed from handcuffs while being worked on for about 40 minutes, but was pronounced dead, according to Detective Troyer.

Investigators with the sheriff’s office insist officers did not pin him down with a knee on his neck as was the case with the Floyd death. “There was no heads on knees. There was no cutting off of circulation, none of that," Troyer said. "He was handcuffed. He was talking. He was breathing. Then throughout the process, he had trouble breathing and he told people, 'I can’t breathe.' They put him on his side and called for medical aid.”

    I vehemently disagree.
My dad had a story he told me, when he was much younger he and one of his friends (more of an acquaintance really) both applied to be police officers. My dad is a very honest truthful (and loyal) person, but this other guy he knew had a shitty personality, was dishonest, and my dad felt, looking back in retrospect, that he was probably a psychopath. They were both given a psychological test to fill out. My dad was completely honest with every question. At the end of it, my dad found out that he had not passed the psychological test, but his friend had. That shitty terrible person had passed the test. It was obvious, to my dad, that he had lied and just wrote in and told them answers that he knew they wanted to hear.

While it is subjective and I am sure there are exceptions a certain type of person is typically drawn to positions of power and weaponry. Police and the military are no exception.

Not true. It’s just that the black deaths are pimped out to/by the democrats with press passes.

Huh? There were 10,200,000 arrest made by the police last year in the US and only 41 unarmed suspects died in police custody. That’s a mortality rate of .000004019. You’ll have a better chance of dying from being torn apart by a salt water crocodile and a great white shark while being struck by a bolt of lightning as you’re surfing off the coast of South Africa.

Btw, out of those 41 unarmed suspects that died in police custody only 9 were Black.

BETTER psychological tests. Lie detectors etc, ANYTHING to assure we dont hire those sociopaths.

I know, that for instance, WALMART shitty jobs, give you a psych test, and ANYONE that answers truthfully, is not hired. Folks take it again, and lie, voila.

Love how people skew numbers to justify something to make it seem okay. Congrats......

Not my numbers, just my reposting.

41 unarmed people were killed by police in USA 2019. Only 9 were black. 80% of
interracial crime committed in the U.S. was black on white. And upwards of 10% was black on Hispanic. Remove all crimes on or by Asians, Hispanic on white and Hispanic on black and white on black crime is an extremely rare event. So over 90% of the interracial crime is being committed by 13% of the population. Two inconvenient facts from Fox News. You would think these numbers are reversed based upon the "justice" words being thrown around.

Some people are very good test takers, looking between the lines, under the punctuation, and behind the question mark. If you're in college make it easy on yourself and give the answer the overseer wants to hear. In four short years you'll be free again. Except for the debt owed on a sheepskin you overpaid for.
