There's a website devoted to this subject, or the site as a page devoted to it:

Now, there are 31 metrics, and the ranking will vary on the metrics, but only the salient ones are listed, and of course, the overall ranking.

    So, let's get into it.

    Fun facts:

The top five states with the lowest suicide rate are all blue states with California and Connecticut tying for 5th place. (Hawaii, and why would you do such a thing if you lived there? ).

The top five states with the highest suicide rate are all red states with Montana leading the pack ( what's up with that? ).

The least happy 10 states are all red states, with West Virginia the bottom of the barrel.

Of the 10 happiest states, 7 of them are blue states, and lo, 3 red ones made it to the top 10, so it's not all bad for you reddies :)

Lowest long term unemployment rate, top 5 are all red states, congrats reddies!

Anyway, there's science in their methodology, (Gallup pollsters used) but, of course, we can argue 'subjective' all day long, but I think the results on the different metrics are interesting.

    https://wallethub.com/edu/happiest-states/6959/

Anyone care to state where they live? I live in beautiful California, the 5th largest economy in the world, where there are more homeless AND more wealth than any other state, and there is a to die for coastline ( eat your heart out, you land locked states ) and the weather is 'totally awesome' [/calif. accent]

Now now, before y'all start raggin' on California ( I'm originally from Texas, by the way) if you were homeless, where would you rather live, in Minnesota? or California?

    I mean, c'mon, it's a no brainer.

Well, you made your point but I would like to add this . . .
--The words "if you were homeless" is a sad commentary on where our country has come in the past 75 years.

I live in Alabama and I am very happy. Very little regulation and that equates to freedom. Who cares about some article in wallethub. I would rather not be homeless anywhere.

I've been to 47 of the 50 states. The best place I've seen is New England - in spite of its liberal politics. The mountains, coastline, history, and culture are wonderful. And New England literally has the best fall scenery in the world with the trees changing colors.

But for everyday living, it's hard to beat the Dallas suburbs. Beautiful neighborhoods, good people, and no squalor. Home prices are reasonable. And the weather is fantastic: glorious spring & fall seasons. Cool (not cold) winters. Summer afternoons can be hot; I could do without that.

LOL! Hell, it doubles as a map showing the degree of left leaning populations as well. It isn't just blue vs red. The bluer a State is, the happier it is.

The NW gets bonus point for having to overcome the lack of sunshine. They struggle with seasonal affective disorder, esp in Oregon.

Concerning suicide rate, it's well known that the least you're exposed to light, the more likely you get depression and high suicide rate. It's not the only cause by the way, but for instance, all far north european countries have very important suicide rate (sweden, finland, norway, denmark), in France, the two regions with the most suicides have very low light exposure because of their very cloudy climate (Britanny and Normandy). Groenland is the part of the world where people are taking the most their own life. Alaska has among the highest suicide rate and are very akin to the nordic european countries.
It's obvious that many other considerations come when it's about suicide. Some northern american states have less suicide than some southern states.
Apparently, the midwest states are the state of despair when it come about suicides statistics.

Hawaii being #1 was what I guessed and a bit of a no brainer. What is a complete shocker was Utah coming in at #2. Methinks this is Mormon delusion going on.

Perhaps, but since the dawn of time, there has always been homeless. When I was a teen, we called them 'hoboes'. In the 70s, we called them winos but today's lost souls don't seem to like wine anymore.

When you first wade in, it's real cold, but your body adjusts, and when you're moving around, swimming, you don't notice it. I grew up going to the beach a lot as a teenager, and it really wasn't that big of a problem. But, the further north you go, the colder it gets. I grew up in SoCal. The surfers, who spend a lot of time in the water, most of them wear wetsuits.

I could do without Dallas county altogether. Rockwall, Kaufman, Van Zandt, and Ellis counties are nice. I grew up in Mesquite and it's not the same.

Ha, you don’t know cold water till you’ve experienced the ocean on Maine’s coast. It’s numbing...and that’s in the summer.

If you stay away from the larger cities. I don't think I will ever live within a city limit again. I like the freedom and absence of overregulation.

I'd rather not be homeless and housing is far more affordable almost every where but NYC.

What kind of fish in that river? I seem to like cold water caught fish better except Salmon, Trout and stuff. But I did catch some really good Speckled Trout in Louisiana. They were delicious but the ones at the fish market didn't taste good.

Then you want nothing to do with Cali :) So many rules nothing is fun anymore.. SO MANY people its totally stupid.. I went boating with my brother a pretty descent size lake and had to TAKE A NUMBER and wait to get a spot on the water/launch! We spent entire day there and never put the boat in the lake, BULLSHIT state!!
