Yes, Australia benefits from military co-operation with the US but that's point of co-operation so do they. They get access to bases and technical support in a part of the globe where they don't have much infrastructure if any themselves. So it benefits both partners. As for being 'raided and invaded'? Firstly no-one wants Australia for 'der Lebensraum' (we live in world where most countries have declining birth rates) and any country that might in the foreseeable future (say one to the north - name beginning with the letter I ) doesn't have the military capacity to carry it off even in the absence of a US Alliance. Finally if someone wants our resources well they can do what everyone else does - buy them. Which is heaps easier and waaaay cheaper than fighting a war over them - the one big indisputable plus of a globalized economy.

We could hypothetically get sucked into a dispute between the US and China but on the whole the world today is more peaceful and less violent than it has been for 75 years.

It's more peaceful is it  hold that thought because that's not going to last for too much longer...

If you say so Monash.. if you say so, mutually beneficial and that's all it is...

I'll add a disclaimer too: in no way do I suggest that post #24 is a good idea, I'm just laying it out

You can argue over who gets the most benefit out of any relationship, be it personal, business or political. All that matters in the end is that both parties feel its worth maintaining because benefits derived from it are greater than the cost of ending it. Nothing says the US Australian relationship will stay the same forever or that the partnership is an equal one.

Australia can not make decisions that go against US interests. This is why we never go against US interest, not because it always just happen to benefit us... because it doesn't... always benefit us. We're currently getting kicked around like a soccer ball between China and the US, the Iraq war was a bad decision for us, did we really have the option of not being part of it.... Australia's politicians also just happen to be smart enough never to test this relationship, why? Because we need our shark, we need a big military or we need someone else's big military.

I think you are in denial, the truth simply too much to bear.

We could become a bit more of a Switzerland, a bit more on the neutral side, don't you think?

Switzerland has a unique geographical, historical and political relationship with the rest of Europe. Basically it has remained 'neutral' all these years because it suited the major European powers for it to be so. And that fact remained true right up to the end of WW11. After which point the gradual development of the EU meant it's special 'neutral' status no longer really mattered.

Of course by then there was no-one really interested that challenging that status anyway so it has continued on in a world where that oft sighted neutrality is for all intents and purposes largely an irrelevancy. Hell its not even the most favored destination these days for corrupt dictators and rich oligarchs to store their stolen wealth in anymore. I mean whats the world coming to?

For the rest? you can certainly argue the benefits of a more independent foreign policy by Australia and a generally more neutral stance in world affairs but as I said earlier its a benefit vs cost calculation that may well change over time - or not.

That would be ideal M2, except the world is on a precipice of hostility and conflict & an economic cliff that will tip us head first into turmoil. We are also already in the middle of a US/China conflict, we have already been forced to choose our shark.

The irony of course is that the US is currently on a communist course... so choosing the US because they are not communist only to have the Communist Democrats win an election would be most ironic and the end of Australia as we know it. You will get your socialism only to loose it soon after to communism & totalitarianism

Whilst Australian politicians continue to kiss the arse of every country on the planet, nothing will change...
Australia will continue to be that football, kicked around from here to there....
That's the way it always has been....that's the way it always will be.....

George H. W. Bush was head of the CIA less than two years. The only reason he was nominated for the position was that Bush had an impeccable reputation and the CIAs had suffered a great deal in the years since Watergate. Bush had no background in covert intelligence work.

Lets see, how about Denmark, France, Germany, Canada, NZ, the Netherlands..... do I have to go on. They all turned up at the dance even if some were reluctant attendees and only stayed part of the night. And again why fixate on only the Gulf war as if it is the single most relevant event in World History?

Also the figures I've seen indicate the deaths of aprox 60-200 thousand Iraqi military personnel plus 100-200,000, civilians with Allied casualties in the low hundreds. Note ; not 1 million, not even close.

Australian politicians are too incompetent to build anything....
They couldn't build their way out of a shithouse....
We are currently awaiting numerous submarines from France...a multi billion dollar deal...
I think the first is scheduled to arrive in 2030....god knows when the rest will be available....
We bought 70 odd F35s from the US...castoffs...The US keep the good stuff...
I think our Navy vessels main weaponry consists of slingshots and boomerangs....
    Laughable.....just laughable....

I don't think any of our F-35s are really old enough to be labeled "castoffs".

Well, actually he was a member of Congress a couple of years. Plus he was the Nixon Admin. envoy to China (some say this job that Bush did not want was due to maneuvering by Donald Rumsfeld to keep Bush out of Washington and from building a power base in the GOP).

Yes, the nature and quality of the power base these men establish and cultivate in deep state is probably more important than anything they did covered by the news or before the cameras.

So they're kissing China's ass at the moment are they? That must be why Beijing is suddenly imposing new tariffs on our exports.

Current weapon systems on the Australian navies front line combat vessels include

    - the SM-2 anti-air missiles,
    - harpoon anti- missiles;
    - Mark 32 torpedoes;
    - phalanx CIWS (destroyers)
    - Mark 45 5" naval guns

They also carry state of the art AEGIS systems and CEAFAR radar systems (on the frigates ) which are currently rated as superior for their designed task than similar systems on allied naval vessels including the US navy.

In other words they're as close to state of the art as we can keep them and comparable in combat effectiveness to any or all allied navies. So how about a little less piss and vinegar in your 'postings' and little more fact next time.

Their main fault is we don't have enough of them, but then that would require higher taxes, which again based on your previous form you'd be the first one to decry. So you tell me - what to do???

    [QUOTE=
    What to do....well I know...
How bout we order some more subs...maybe we'll get them in 50 years...
Maybe we could put another five inch pop gun on our frigate.....
Sorry..not sure...have we got one or two frigates at the moment.....
Seriously....you seem to support our government...I don't...nor do I support
    the other mob....
My main decry is the incompetent government under which we live and the
ludicrous amount of money we spend and the way we spend it to "improve"
    our military capacity....
