You see? You get it. Human behaviour affects whether animals and even entire species live or die.

    Some people just don’t care.

you certainly are implying he and he’s supporters are to blame... why else bring him up?

i guess after the russian hoax was exposed, the impeachment hoax flopped, and now the political witch hunt going after he and his families records was called out by the Court you got to move on to something else like blaming him for things going extinct.

As George Carlin quipped over 90% of all species that ever existed in the planet are now extinct...... and we did not kill them. Plant and animal species go extinct by the thousands every year and humans don't kill them. Such self-righteous arrogance.

Read what I wrote. I didn’t say trump and his supporters were to blame for human-caused extinctions.
Just that they (generally) don’t care to do anything about the issue. You are helping me to prove my point.

Eh, I have to disagree. I mean, I agree, that yes 90% of all species that ever existed have gone extinct without being killed by humans, but man has only been around for such a tiny blip of time in the larger scheme of things. The amount of damage we have done and are doing in the tiny span of time we have been on the earth is huge.
Of course, species will continue to go extinct with or without our help, but we are losing the incredible biodiversity that has existed up to this point. I personally love just getting out into the wild and seeing the incredible diversity of life that is out there, everything from insects to tigers and whales.
but beyond that, as species go extinct, so do all the incredible secrets these species hold. Cures for diseases, advances in material sciences, etc etc etc...
I could go on all day about the negative impact we are having on the planet.

We can do better. I am a Trump supporter, especially given what the alternative is, but we suck on environmental issues. I don’t think it is Trumps fault. Politicians respond to the will of their constituents. The blame rests on all of humanity.

True. Lots of species have gone extinct without humans being responsible for those extinctions.

But now, lots of species either have gone extinct or are at risk of going extinct because of human activity. The question is whether you care to do anything about it.

We are causing one of the Great Dyings right now and this is despite the fact that we are doing our best to save many species.

When you say “we”, this thread is proof that it doesn’t include everyone. A lot of people just don’t care.

we’ll get there. Overall there is still sooo much work to be done, but there are small victories adding up as we learn to adapt more. We have certainly come a very long way since the 60s and 70s, but yeah, we still have a long ways to go.
Just in Maine, it’s a mixed bag. On one hand we have brought the Penobscot river back to life by removing most of the dams. Alewives and Salmon are able to go back up the river now, which they had not been able to for decades, and it is having a positive cascade effect on the region’s wildlife.

on the downside, Central Maine Power is trying to cut a massive power corridor through the largest hardwood forest left on the planet, which is fragmenting habitats and destroying huge amounts of sensitive wetlands environments. Creatures that thrive in deep woods habitats will be driven out, and will be out competed by animals that thrive in edge environments. Not to mention the scenery their will be wrecked, in one of the most beautiful parts of the state.

so yeah, it’s an ongoing battle, but we will figure it out.

I've wondered from time to time if we really were the first intelligent species. Maybe another one was here a long time ago and they killed themselves off. This may be the only trace of them left. 210 million years can utterly erase whole mountain chains, how much of us would be left after that much time?

What's the natural rate of extinction?

If humans, as a species are (allegedly) increasing the rate of extinction, how is that not natural?

    What is natural?

    Trump?

He is literally the Hitler of Mass Extinction.

If he is re-elected, the Sun will crash into the earth, extinguishing all life.

    Pass it on, and...

    Natural rate again...

    Meaningless term.

The rate is inherently natural; it cannot be otherwise.

And even if we did/when we do, what can be done?

Humans are a force of nature.

    It's how the planet works.

    What is "damage?"

Do lions do "damage" when they kill?

    Termites when they process wood?

In nature, "damage" has no meaning.

I wont argue in principle, we tend to tell the environment, the animals and mother nature (rivers, streams, forests) to fk off and get out of the way. We did it as cavemen too, there were just less of us and we hadn't invented the bulldozer yet. All downhill from there.

Agressively Stopping population growth is likely the best solution long term.

The inner city seems to be onto something, maybe I should revisit their plans.

I think that Fusion power will eventually save us all. Yes, it's a technological "quick fix" but that is what technology is for after all. Even if the population does level off, humanity cannot live without some source of lots more electricity.

    Do what?

    Why?

Even if we could interfere with the nature of our actions in nature, why would we?
