OK, is this wise? This town of 7,000 people is expecting 250,000 to 500,000 people, according to the article coming from "all over the world" and with the bars full of partying people, the overwhelming majority of them, maskless (see the third picture by clicking on the arrows on the first pic). All this, in the middle of the pandemic, and all under the complacent eyes of SD's governor.

Me, I think it's an incredibly boneheaded decision. What do you all think?

I think people are tired of being closed up and that small town is probably dependent on the revenue brought in during the event. It might have helped if they chose to don masks but that's their choice. We'll know in a couple of weeks if it was a responsible decision.

I want to thank these volunteers for experimenting with a deadly virus. Let the count begin. As of today, there has been 9477 positive cases and 146 deaths in SD. We can all sit back and watch!

Bikers are not known for caution. The act of riding s motorcycle at all is throwing caution to the wind

Portland has not suffered a severe outbreak.

    Thanks for playing

These bikers come from all over the country...so the spread will be all over.

Sturgis however is going to see a big outbreak among their 7,000 inhabitants

I think that in a couple of weeks we will see more of how the virus spreads. I do hope this "protest" doesn't turn out as bad as it seems likely to do.

There has been an increase...but a small one. On the order of 30-400 cases per day

At the same time that Florida,Texas, and California have had 8-10,000 per day

In fact those state have more infections in three DAYS than Oregon has had in total

The proportion of mask use in that town and among the bikers seems to be very small. Indeed we'll know in a couple of weeks. The other bad point is that the bikers who will get infected during the gathering, will then go back to their own towns and will carry the virus with them and spread it more.

Maybe motorcycle rallies are just like the widespread, continuous riots, that is, these kind of things just don't spread the coronavirus.

I don't think there was much the governor nor the town could have done to stop it. Myrtle Beach cancelled theirs and the bikers came anyway.

Outdoors transmission is rare, but the bikers apparently are going by the hundreds into bars and restaurants for night-long wild parties and THAT will spread the virus, no doubt.

It'd have to be 1000X or so a Seattle I-5 road block.

I've extensively posted the science showing that masks do work to lower the odds of contagion (not to eliminate it, but to lower it), as in no fewer than 29 scientific papers. But given so many here who mistrust Science, we don't even need to go there. Just look at Kansas (I recently posted a link to their experience in the Mask thread). 15 counties there have mask mandates. The other 90 do not. The rate of contagion dropped sharply in all 15 that have the mandates, and didn't drop at all in all 90 that do not, no exceptions; not a single one with masks failed to drop the rates, and not a single one without masks failed to NOT drop the rates. That's a pretty convincing correlation then and there indicating that in all likelihood masks do help, unsurprisingly (given the 29 studies I've also quoted elsewhere in my posting history). Again, they are not perfect and even the best masks worn correctly (N95s professionally fitted and sealed) don't protect all healthcare workers and some healthcare workers still catch the virus. Cloth masks perform much less well. But still, regardless of the fact that the protection is only partial, it *is* better than nothing as demonstrated in Kansas, and yes, no harm in wearing them, so not doing it is really not the wisest decision. It is a decision driven by politics at this point, when it should be a decision driven by public health. Oh well, what can we do? We try to advocate for their use, but a lot of people are not willing to listen. Clarification: I'm actually not for mandates; I'm for education. Whether or not the education catches is a matter for our leaders. If they were to united, from both parties, strongly advocate for masks, maybe the population would follow the advice a bit more (not entirely because we Americans have the cultural trait of mistrusting government, anyway; but a bit more).

With the National Guard called up by the governor to enforce the road blocks, they wouldn't be just attempted.
