Why do schools have pro sports teams anyway? They're supposed to be educating people, not playing games.

I want Ameican Institutions to do what WE taxpayers PAY them to do, thru either tax exemptions or direct grants. And what we pay them to do is to educate people and do research, not give and receive brain concussions

 

I have some sympathy for that. However, as a former varsity athlete on a scholarship, I can attest to the fact that getting that scholarship helped me get through. And there are some athletes that would not be able to afford university at all if it were not for their scholarships. There are sports in high school so why not in college? I think that school - whether it is primary, middle, high school or college - should legitimately be about more than academics. I have no problem with extra-curricular activities.

I do think that the amount of money involved in some of the sports is obscene, however.

Billions of dollars to my knowledge. It corrupts the colleges and the athletes completely. It has no place in an institute of learning and research and should be forbidden by law.

 

Corrupt all the way. The sports corrupt the colleges and the colleges corrupt the sports, but then sports itself is a basically corrupt activity.
