    Because they didn't think 15 cases would go to ZERO soon. That it would magically disappear. They took it serious.

    New Zealand’s elimination strategy for the COVID-19 pandemic and what is required to make it work | OPEN ACCESS
    Michael G Baker, Amanda Kvalsvig, Ayesha J Verrall, Lucy Telfar-Barnard, Nick Wilson

    What we need to do to make elimination work
    Elimination is a well-recognised strategy for infectious disease control, and New Zealand can draw on public health experience of eliminating a range of human and animal infectious diseases. In particular there are lessons to be learned from the measles and rubella elimination strategy,17,20 albeit with the difference that we do not yet have an effective vaccine for COVID-19. Past experience has taught us that there are three factors that are critical to elimination success: 1) high-performing epidemiological and laboratory surveillance systems; 2) an effective and equitable public health system that can ensure uniformly high delivery of interventions to all populations, including marginalised groups (in this instance intervention is focused on diagnosis, isolation of cases and quarantine of contacts rather than vaccine); and 3) the ability to sustain the national programme and update strategies to address emerging issues.

    The essential elements of an elimination strategy for COVID-19 are likely to include:

    1. Border controls with high-quality quarantine of incoming travellers;

    2. Rapid case detection identified by widespread testing, followed by rapid case isolation, with swift contact tracing and quarantine for contacts;

    3. Intensive hygiene promotion (cough etiquette and hand washing) and provision of hand hygiene facilities in public settings;

    4. Intensive physical distancing, currently implemented as a lockdown (level 4 alert) that includes school and workplace closure, movement and travel restrictions, and stringent measures to reduce contact in public spaces, with potential to relax these measures if elimination is working;

    5. A well-coordinated communication strategy to inform the public about control measures and about what to do if they become unwell, and to reinforce important health promotion messages.

    Anything to back this up for teenagers or we talking about an article one off? I promise you 99% of these athletes want to play, same as the young protestors want to protest, except they are actually gaining skills that could lead to NFL or a college degree vs learning how quick to get federal time in the Pen.

    BS not true, how much does that notre dame degree cost again, or the monthly $2,500 stipend, or the free room and board or restaurant style food they get every meal at most d1 universities.

    These are horrible choices to make. I imagine the lawsuit lottery we have in this country is a factor. One kid gets permanent lung damage and then the lawsuits about dangerous environment start popping up.

    There are too many folks who have said that their goal is to hurt the reelection of the current president by any means for you to take this position. Of course liberals are artificially killing the states and cities they manage. How many examples would you say creates a quorum here? You don't like the observation because it paints democrats and liberals as the power hungry grubs they actually are.

    Too many? How many is that?

    I know lots of people of all political persuasions. The republicans in my life are taking this seriously, wearing masks, think Trump is a big poopy-pants-head, and are still going to vote for him. The leftists in my life are doing all the recommended things, so this can be over and done with. We haven't had one of our numerous monthly gatherings since March. We are anxious to get together again. Nobody in this very lefty group thinks there's a big party in November. Our working theory is that it will be April next year before we can have one of our large group gatherings. Our annual gathering of 500 is completely postponed for 2020.

    I don't know any extremists like those uber partisans that live on this forum. I've never met anyone so grossly opposed to facts as the loons on this forum. The chest thumpers - "My team always good! Other team always bad!!" I don't know ANYBODY like that.

    I don't think anybody is arguing that point. Giving people choices is the American way. Government mandates are the socialist way.

    Apparently. The government has fueled the hysteria about the virus right along. It even allowed governors and mayors to cripple the economy thereby fighting a crisis with a worse crisis.

    Now you're just making stuff up. The Big 10 league presidents are not government employees. The decision is theirs, and you keep saying it should be a choice. They are making a choice. Respect it.

    Horrible choices? These guys make these choices daily, walk down the gang street or not, smoke or not, drink or not, drive drunk or not, on and on. Shocking I know but some people want to better themselves and aren't scared of the .01 chance they'll be affected by covid. Serious question do you work?

    The internet is replete with many such. I surely am not one. But, I cannot in good faith not point out that so many in the politerati from the left do seem to enjoy their new found authority and have demonstrated the lengths to which they are willing to over reach and dictate artificial barriers to success.. One simply has to watch the antics in Los Angeles, and California as a whole. Entire swaths of the economy there aren't working entirely based on the concept of "essential". And while I might not think that making commercials or TV or film content is "essential", the folks who derive their living from it surely do. And why pick economic winners and losers at all? Why not simply trust that folks can, and will do the right thing? I've pointed out many times that the folks in my small town who don't follow the rules by enlarge are the liberals. They refuse to do so. I call it elitism and characterize it as entitlement.

    Ahh poor baby, they couldn't quiet understand why you couldn't buy garden seed but liquor was acceptable among other things. What about those peaceful protesters that that murdered kids, burned building, ruined family businesses, and ruined downtown, I guess that's how those gun toting protestors should've acted to get the wacko lefty approval.
