Take risks sure but at your own expense not innocent bystanders who want no part in your risks

But why the need to bring in Normandy for his analogy? Why even think let alone imply that the two were even in the same ballpark?

Don’t know but would bet that Lou would vehemently react to one of his players taking a knee yet he has no problem with the comparing the risk of playing college football with that of servicemen getting off the landing craft on Normandy

That is the thing about analogies. They often are intended to provide an example, not a comparison. Sadly, in many people, "critical thinking" has been replaced with "literal thinking" and some people focus too much on the words than the meaning behind them.

I’ll grant you the first thought, but employing extremes in comparisons leads to literal interpretation

I would say it should lead to the exact opposite. If the extreme is towards the absurdity, why would anybody take it literal? The "critical thinking" part should cause one to realize that literal interpretation might not be proper.

And reserves aren't just a way to avoid combat. Most of those sent to Iraq were Reserves called up. Budgetary machinations meant that Regular Army stayed home in that conflict.

It still doesn't mean there's any sort of valid comparison being made here. The survival of Democracy is a lot more worthy goal to die for than is Trump's numbers.

Atta’ boy, Lou! Let’s ban hard-hats from construction sites, remove seat belts from cars, and rip out guard rails from baby cribs too! Remember Normandy and .....

Hey! Stop right there and show some respect, fmw! Lou has been tackled really hard ..... twice ... so he knows a thing or two about fear and what it was like storming the beaches of Normandy under heavy machine-gun fire!

And that is pretty much what is being asked for. Mitigation, to the point where the deaths are manageable.

Do some people think we can still keep a running society if EVERYONE who has an immune system even slightly compromised dies pretty much IMMEDIATELY?

I read one guy who said, "Most people will be pretty distressed if they have to step over several corpses on their way into Starbuck's " but I don't think some on this board would be bothered at all.

Some on this board aren't interested in living a life of fear.

May I suggest rugby for you? Watch a couple of tri-nations cup matches.

Some on this board do not like having to live in increased fear because of others refusing to recognize danger.

I am very familiar with rugby and was a fan during the Springbok v.s All Black matches "in the old days" but it has nothing to do with Lou Holtz. He's the one who's pretending to be tough though I am sure he doesn't know what pain is.

You would have been correct if he was in the reserves in 2001. He was induring the late 1950's after Korea before Vietnam. Very very very few reservists or guard units were sent to Vietnam.

Since the Dicky Cheney reorg plan you are correct that reserves and Guard are much like regular forces but that did not start until the late 1980's at least.

Just for the sake of absolute honesty there were a small amount of Air Guard called updiring Vietnam. I as a regular got assigned to a FANG unit and they served along side with me in Vietnam but they served TDY Tempoary Duty for 179 days in country then out. If they or anyone served
180 days in country it would count as a permanent assignment but neither LBJ or Tricky Dicky wanted the troop count of those serving in Vietnam to go higher. TDYs were not counted as "stationed " in Vietnam.
I had complete respect for the FANGS I served with. They were well trained and almost all served well and had a good attitude though rebellious. I was made an honorary FANG.

FANG = F.......ing Air National Guard. as us Regular AF called them until we served with FANGS. BTW George W served in the TANG which did not go to Vietnam.
