Donald Trump cannot block a prosecutor's subpoena for eight years of his tax returns, a federal judge ruled on Thursday, in the latest setback in the U.S. president's longstanding effort to keep his finances under wraps.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said the case will likely head back to the Supreme Court, which on July 9 rejected his earlier argument he was immune from state criminal probes while in office.

The Supreme Court said the Republican president could still challenge the subpoena on other grounds. Marrero had also ruled last October that Vance, a Democrat, could enforce the subpoena.

This is a good and obvious decision, but I still find it laughable that this might have to go to the SCOTUS twice.... First time, Trump doesn't have absolute immunity, so they send it back to the lower level, where it was obvious Trump had no new arguments on this topic, and the judge confirms that today.

So now it can go BACK to the SCOTUS?? Why couldn't this all be resolved by the SCOTUS the first time?

"Trump doesn't have absolute immunity, so we remand it back to the lower court. We will not hear this case again, so the next lower court ruling is binding in our book"

What a massively ****ed up system that is....

    Anybody agree with that??

It’s really a joke how long it takes to rule on illegal actions by our govt.

Nixon had his 8-0 ruling against him within 4 months of the original subpoena and just 3 weeks after both Nixon and Jaworski asked for the SCOTUS ruling...

Vance submitted his grand jury subpoena last August, so we are likely already at a year...

    Freaking sad...

I’m ok with taking our time before we murder people. Can’t take that back.

Couple different things...one that was an impeachment investigation, this isn't...two....the property the special prosecutor wanted belong to the Executive Branch, not Nixon. three, after the District Ruled, both sides appealed directly to the SCOTUS

It also seems Vance didn't really learn anything from the SCOTUS decision....they were greatly concerned with what appeared was a clear political motive behind this....my guess it will get tossed

They still can't cite what they're looking for. He "might" have done something wrong.

I strongly oppose this move and see it as an abuse of power. Those claiming to oppose interference are cheering it on. Our legal system and the IRS are already powerful enough.

Just remember that the monster you create will be there long after Trump. Just hope that you don't become politically inconvenient to those holding the leash.

You oppose investigating criminals? Or only once they get elected to the White House? No, if anything we should STRONGLY investigate any possible criminal activity by anyone running for or in the White House. That's exactly how you AVOID getting the wrong person in power, like we have now, in the first place.

Another small step towards justice. Trump has the means to delay and delay and delay, but he can't escape Lady Justice in the end.

Worse than that, he lied about showing his returns. He used to say that he would and that he wanted to, but that an (imaginary) IRS audit was preventing him from doing so. Democrats and independent investigators alike have sure called that bluff!

In general fairness, the Stormy payment made by Cohen and Individual 1 were so close to the election, no investigation would have been able to push that info out there in time...

However, we all know Vance is also looking into the roller coaster of what Trump claims his worth was...

    High for loans

    Low for taxes

    Probably at the same time...

Yep. All he had to say was, I don't feel I should have to show them because of X. But the lie was easier for his supporters to follow. After all, it's always the evil government getting in the way, right?

While it is a crime, I don't care if he paid her to not talk about the affair from campaign money.

I care more about someone who has committed tax fraud against the very government he's now running a branch of. In fact, Nixon had a tax problem as well...I feel it's a gateway crime. :rotf:
