No problem. I think it's hard for many people to conceptualize just about anything lately. I can't believe we've been dealing with this pandemic for this long, the economy is struggling, the debate was a mess and now our POTUS is in the hospital with an election 32 days away. It's been a rough year! I know that I'm exhausted from it all. ;-0

But Pence already took an oath when he became VP.

He would take a different oath to be acting President.

    Because he's not president

    SNIP
Whenever the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that he is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, and until he transmits to them a written declaration to the contrary, such powers and duties shall be discharged by the Vice President as Acting President.

Actually, Trump would love this concept, because he's LOVES Acting titles...

I suppose, in the "anything's possible" vein, that it's possible he fell and hit his head and got knocked out just as I hit the "Post Reply" button on this post, but, jeez man, get a grip, we saw him on video upright, walking under his own power, and waving to people like 90 minutes ago.

Here's the entire text of the 25th:

    Section 1
In case of the removal of the President from office or of his death or resignation, the Vice President shall become President.

    Section 2
Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.

    Section 3
Whenever the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that he is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, and until he transmits to them a written declaration to the contrary, such powers and duties shall be discharged by the Vice President as Acting President.

    Section 4
Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.

Thereafter, when the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that no inability exists, he shall resume the powers and duties of his office unless the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive department or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit within four days to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. Thereupon Congress shall decide the issue, assembling within forty-eight hours for that purpose if not in session. If the Congress, within twenty-one days after receipt of the latter written declaration, or, if Congress is not in session, within twenty-one days after Congress is required to assemble, determines by two-thirds vote of both Houses that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall continue to discharge the same as Acting President; otherwise, the President shall resume the powers and duties of his office.

There was another angle of him walking to the helicopter, and he looked like his normal, overweight self to me, but YMMV.

    Nope. It's the same oath.

Read the text of the 25th above.

There's not really a good reason for Congress to hide the letter, but there's no requirement there that "We, the people, must always know who the president is." For example, if we get into a fight with China, and we get EMP'ed, and the President dies, the VP can take over without "we, the people" knowing. That's not a requirement.

Yes, where did you get this "right to know" idea from? Again, no real good reason to hide it, but there's no requirement that X% of the country be aware of the change before it takes legal effect, or anything like that.

When you think about it (and I suspect he has) that would be the perfect way to get the post presidency pardon he'll need badly.

"Mike, I don't feel well.... Making you Temporary POTUS. You know what to do..."
"Thank you Sir, may I have another?"

Well, as is true with anything Trump, just wait a day or two and you'll get your answer....followed by more questions.

That angle has been sitting in the wings for months. This may be the way he dovetails into it.

I looked at some other sites to find an answer and didn't run across anything. I sent a question to the White House. I'm pretty sure they are busy at the moment but will post here if I get a definitive answer from them!

It would still be reported at some point. Or, are you saying they could transfer power temporarily and nobody is made the wiser?

    You're thinking of this image...

This occurred prior to there being the 25th Amendment. Johnson helped add the 25th because of the Kennedy assassination.

There are those two incidents where Dick Cheney was the president for a few hours and we weren't notified till it reverted back to Bush.

I think you might be right. I'm not old enough to have witnessed this firsthand but I recall seeing this photo somewhere. I also vaguely recall all the news coverage when Reagan was going into surgery after he was shot and they had to transfer power. Thanks for enlightening me!

Thankfully, this has not been an issue until now, but that is why history is important.

BTW, I was only 1 year old when this photo was taken. ;)

Another key part of the 25th was the ability to appoint a new VP.

I remember that also. I think they keep a lid on things as much as possible because the POTUS's health greatly impacts the stock market. But, at some point, they HAVE to tell us.

That is why now I'm concerned things are more serious than we are being lead to believe. I cannot even fathom the number of people that have been exposed in the WH. It's encouraging to know Pence and Biden are okay, but what a nightmare!
