A potentially huge break from tradition. How will the laity react? He could be doing this to keep the church relevant:

I was raised in the RC church, but lost my religion decades ago.

I like most everything this new Pope has done, this included.

this is good news. and about time. Religious traditions & "beliefs" must change with the times. or they might become obsolete .

Its smart if you think about it. A civil union is not a marriage as far as the church is concerned, so really he has not given up any ground.

Undoubtedly some more Catholics will break away, but who needs Mel Gibson anyway? Gain more than lose.

I happily ignore what politicians say and I view the current pope as a politician.

Could be... .or he could be reading near death experience accounts and he might just identify the Being of Light of NDE fame with Baruch 6:6.

[6] "For my angel is with you: And I myself will demand an account of your souls."

You just gotta love this guy! He's the best flockin' pope EVER!

Still, it's the teeniest of steps in the right direction. This is little more than an acknowledgement of what is. In much of the "Catholic world" there is already legal if not tacit recognition of these relationships. Still, it is good to se the Pope stepping away from these harmful ancient theologies.

I could have written @Eleuthera's post. Left RCC ages ago but like this pope quite a bit (as far as Catholics go).

I thought the pope served the same God that took out Sodom and Gomorrah. I guess not. God didn't change.

This isn’t a departure from the teachings of the Catholic Church in regard to homosexuality and marriage. The pope is showing tolerance to all children of God and their right to be happy families. It’s coming from a place of tolerance and shepherding the entire flock.

I don't think it has anything to do with making the Church relevant, or at least it shouldn't. More than likely it has to do with the charitable institutions of the Catholic Church, and that they're not able to cover the hospital costs and the burial arrangements the way they did before. If civil unions are accepted legally, everyone will be able to get insurance.

This would have nothing to do with the actual teachings of the Church, since the emphasis in Christianity is to free oneself from all material and carnal desires, so as to attain unity with God in His Kingdom/Dimension.

One thing is certain, it will create a lot of friction within the Catholic Church because of the inability of some to separate the reality of paying hospital bills, with the actual teachings of the Church.

    Just my opinion!

Everything in our world is interconnected, so when man goes against the natural order, he's disrupting the elements as well. Sodom and Gomorrah is given as an example, but there have been others as well. Ancient Corinth comes to mind.

    Romans chapter 1

26For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

Which wasn't why the city was destroyed. The violated the right of hospitality and refused to apologize when Abraham gave them the chance so got smited. Actually a volcano erupted but a bunch of Bronze Age sheep herders couldn't know that so invented a crazy story.

He actually already broke away. He and his father belong to a group that split from the RCC years ago and claim to be the "real" Catholics.

Right, if we weren't living in a "clown world" we'd accept the fact that homosexuality, like all sins, came into this world because a man made of mud and a woman made of a bone disobeyed the sky spirit and ate magic fruit from a talking snake. That makes a lot more sense.

Take that you fools of misery.
For we as gods of lofty see,
are unlike you - such lowly fools
    who follow banal moral rules.

We make our own, it is our right.
    And why we reign in our great height;
and not on earth, but in our stead
of hubris and of bloated head -

I'm Jewish, hun. You need to learn what "antisemitism" actually means if you are going to use the term. If that isn't too much to ask. Or keep using Jews as your political football while continuing to pretend to care about us.

As religion declines, we will see more of this. Maybe one day, priests will be able to have wives! (It will make life much easier on the altar boys!)
