Probably ignorance combined with lack of enough monetary incentive for research funding. The scientists are, in many cases, not actually the ones making the decisions on what area to research in. They are paid. They have an employer telling them what to do. It can be hard to get funding for research if it will probably be harder to profit from it.
Truly well said..... the one hundred wealthiest families on earth pay the CEO's that they hire on average eleven million dollars annually to run their companies that have over a certain number of employees....... They also force those CEO's to sign strict non-disclosure agreements and they enforce those agreements if they are violated. If I could get it going.... I do have some theories based on what I learned since the 1980's that i suspect would improve a number of conditions... They cured cancer a long time ago but the issue was that it also led to other medical breakthroughs. Essentially the worlds death rate would plummet, populations would massively increase and the death toll would skyrocket from things like famine and exposure or new disease. Curing cancer would lead to more death and suffering then not curing it.
OP: interesting! if I had to hazard a guess I would say it's to do with money. Another facet of cancer treatment that is of interest is the use of ketogenic diets i.e low glucose levels in the blood to kill off cancer cells. cancer cells are very inefficient and need a lot of blood sugar to survive and grow. Not much money in these treatments either for the pharmaceutical companies!

Anaerobic cancer cells are just about the most efficient and powerful interdimensional UFO fuel there is. Your children will probably die horrible deaths but we are fast becoming a powerful Nexus of Interplanetary Trade in the meantime.
