Experts Worry Trump Can't Be Trusted With Nation's Secrets After Leaving Office | NBC News NOW

This video clip is about Trump having access to national security secrets and how some are concerned he cannot be trusted with them?

Do you think he would sell them to the highest bidder?

Do you think Trump should have access to national security secrets after he leaves office?

I'm not sure what to think about it all.

I wasn't aware Presidents maintained access to secrets after leaving office. If they do... why? They're sposed to be done.

I wasn't either. According to the clip, they are sometimes called in to counsel the new POTUS. They say that all former presidents have had this type of access. I didn't know until a few minutes ago when I watched this.

Sounds pretty suspect to me. They should all lose their security clearance when they leave office. That being said, I don't think Trump is any less trustworthy with it than the Bush's, Clinton or Obama.

I do worry about it a little bit because of the burning question of his million dollar debt coming due at some point soon. It may be unrelated but it makes the situation precarious.

Frankly, I think that Trump selling national secrets to the highest bidder is a far-fetched scenario, worthy of the "orange man bad" dismissal. And the idea that he is broke and won't be able to pay his debts is also exaggerated. He still has numerous assets worthy a few billions. Just Trump Tower in Manhattan and Mar-a-Lago are worth much more than his debts. Also, he has enormous fundraising power. He will be able to run rallies with a paying ticket, for profit, as many times as he wants, with his huge mass of followers who are naively willing to support him with donations. Let's criticize Trump for his realistic shortcomings. Selling the nation's secrets is not likely to be one of them.

I agree - I wouldn't think he would sell secrets. And though I'm trying not to wade into 'orange man bad' territory, I do wonder if he is capable of not accidentally letting things slip out.

That's more likely, although we don't know what he wouldn't do to have his name on the front page of the newspapers.

I don’t think he would sell them but he is intensely transactional. He will always ask what he can get from something that benefits him. He is also an inveterate blabbermouth telling everyone what he is thinking

Sometimes things are exactly what they seem to be. It's my belief that he's been funneling insider info to Putin for four years. His son-in-law is on record for speaking about opening a back door to Moscow. The US has just been hit with a cyber attack, apparently of epic proportions during his final days in office. He is on record for having had several "private" meetings in person with Putin, and he practically genuflected before Putin at the Helsinki conference. After his reported private meeting with Putin in Brazil he returned to announce a new policy on Syria which led to Mattis's resignation.

I reckon that at some point maybe his Russian handlers gave him a bit of a scolding to keep further public exposure events like this one from occurring.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Trump's_disclosures_of_classified_information

He continues to sow division and we have yet to see whether or not our vaunted federal institutions can actually endure further actions from the guy that likely owes Russian Oligarchs well more than his net worth.

Neither you nor I have any idea of his actual net worth. I have a friend who has pursued extensive investments in rental properties. His net value of these properties is possibly $425k on roughly $2.25M current market value resale with about $1.8M outstanding in loans, but his goal is rental income cash flow. I know this because we are very good friends.

You on the other hand have absolutely no idea what Trump's personal debts are, and much less what the finances of the Trump Organization are, do you? And if you do, please, by all means, share....

He has already proven himself to be Putin's Bitch, or were you not watching?

The fear of novichok is also a strong motivator. I wonder if it is for that reason he reportedly liked to order from McDonalds, and always different ones. As far as I know, he hasn't condemned the attempt on Navalny's life yet.

I think it would be challenge to find any statement where he condemns anything associated with Russia.

There was a thread here a while back where one of his supporters claimed that US sanctions against the completion of the Nord II pipeline proved that he wasn't pro-Russian.

I had to point out that the US sanctions hurt US-EU relations far more than they impacted RU gas shipments.

One of the biggest companies affected was Swiss that has one of the few advanced underwater pipeline construction ships on the whole planet, apparently.

Yeah, their predilection for poisons are kinda fun aren't they?

Dune has to be required reading for the KGB or FSB or whatever they are known by these days.

Separately, although I pretty rarely go for fast food, I do have to admit to, to use an MCD marketing phrase, I'm loving it!

Wired even managed to mix it up with this article that combines his fast food fetish with his obvious penchant to kiss Vlad's ass.

The problem with Trump is that he is more likely to deliberately blab out secrets in an attempt to impress those around him - he just does not think before he talks. Who can forget the time during a meeting with Russians diplomats in the WH when he blabbed out secrets regarding intelligence received from Israel

The problem with Trump is that he would sell his soul if he thought it would get him the attention he craves. Father issues. He can’t be trusted.

He currently has access to top secret information, and will take this knowledge with him. I don't know how much risk this entails, since he doesn't read his security briefings.

I wasn't bashing him. I saw the video and was curious what more politically knowledgeable people thought about it. I don't believe that "all or nothing" thinking gets us anywhere so I don't go for the the "left vs. right" blame game.

With that said, I have never seen a POTUS act the way Trump does. Notwithstanding anything else, just the way he's not coping well with the election results (ie. won't concede, going on a rampage firing people almost every day, lying and half-truthing to keep his base in a perpetual state of anger and paranoia that questions and undermines our democratic process, etc.) makes it evident that he could be capable of going off the handle and saying more than he should to just about anybody.

I think it's a reasonable question. We've never really had to consider such with any former POTUS. In fact, there's quite a few things that were never called into question until Trump did them.

The video discusses that FORMER POTUSes sometimes have access to national security secrets. So, the issue is about future access to that kind of detail.

This also makes me wonder if Trump would even make himself available for consultation if Biden (or any future POTUS) reached out to him.

They can have but most never avail themselves of it. And for pity sake what the hell could he sell them that have already stolen?

This is just more alphabet soup disinformation.
