Are there any other F1 fans on this forum? I've been a fan since the 1970s. I would love to get a conversation going about the current season.

Im not really a racing fan, but what are your thoughts on the tech bans in F1? Iiuc, back in the 70's (or so) there was a guy who was laps ahead of everyone else due to his then new turbine engine, which died just before he won after it sucked up some bit of debris off the track and burned out. His engine type was banned before the next F1 race.

A- do I understand correctly what happenned, and if so...

B- why are they putting such limits on the allowable technologies? Seems to me the racing industry should be embracing whatever will win...

I would assume because the race is about winning with that particular vehicle. The point is to use the same tech and see who can perform the best with it.

They do embrace new tech, but the governing body, the FIA, take effort to keep the races competitive, with which they've had limited success. There always seems to be one or two teams that have a vast advantage, either through engine technology or aerodynamics. The other teams play catch up. It's cyclical. For example, the last eight years have belonged to the Mercedes team. Before that, it was Red Bull, running Renault engines. Before that, it was Ferrari and the stellar rise of Michael Scumacher.

Just some of the tech that has trickled down from F1: anti-lock brakes; carbon fiber body parts, making cars lighter; semi-automatic gearboxes; stability control systems (aka traction control); and so on.

But these days, the focus is on fuel efficiency. This is why I love engineers: the curent engine specs are turbocharged 1.6 liter, 90 degree V6 turbo engines. The maximum engine power rotational speed is 15,000 rpm. With that, they are currently beating lap times that were set years ago with the V-10 engines they used to run, and they are using about 32% less fuel to do it. They're basically running hybrids, and setting new lap records at every circuit. This technology will undoubtedly find its way into our street cars.

Which is exactly what they do in F1. See above.

Didn't see this post until now. I am a BIG F1 fan.

My all time favorite driver is Senna
I was a Shoey fan (brief interlude for Gilles)

I am blown away at the consistent excellence of Mercedes. Niki Toto and Lewis have created an organization that will be studied in business schools for decades.

And the young studs are exciting to watch led by Verstappen who unbelievable is only 23. Naturally I'm tickled Canada has a team and two drivers in the game.

I'm expecting much closer racing this year and am excited about the new specs in 22.

Anyway Cheers, I don't run into many outside f1 subreddits and the usual sites.

It will be interesting to see how Mick Schumacher fares this season, but putting him in a backmarker like Haas has me scratching my head. Then again, Alonso (my favorite) managed at the age of 19 to score a few points in a Minardi. I am overjoyed to see his return.

Hass was pathetic this year. But Mick has a seat at least to show what he can do playing with the big boys.
For some reason I just can't seem to warm up to Alonso but admire his smooth driving style. Reminds me a bit of prost back in the day.

I look forward to the 2021 season. Is it the year Lewis will cap a career with? Will Honda leave entirely? Will Ferrari win with a new power plant? Can Max squeeze more from a Honda relationship that is dying?

And what will new blood bring? The return of the kingly name Schumacher... The return of the fallen king Alonso... The exile of a king to Aston Marin.

The return of British Racing Green to F1. If Aston Martin can have as good a season as Racing Point had last year then Seb is going to have his best in ages.

Yes, there was quite a game of musical chairs. Alonso coming in to replace Ricciardo at Renault, Ricciardo going to McLaren to replace Sainz, Sainz replacing Vettel at Ferrari, and just when it looked like Sebastian was the loser of this game, he goes directly to the CEO of Astin Martin and garners himself a shiny new contract with Racing Point, leaving no seat for Perez. Sometimes silly season is almost as much fun as the racing.

And hopefully, the loser of last season's game of musical chairs, Sergio Perez, will find a way back into a competitive seat for 2022.

Perez got one of the best seats on the grid, Red Bull.

My question is does RBR have to stop calling themselves Aston Martin?

Especially since Perez was the highest scoring and most consistent driver last season and Stroll appears to have kept his seat on Daddy's team for reasons other than his driving skills.

Not sure that anyone feels the RBR #2 seat is a good one...It certainly chews up it's participants.. Checo lives another day though. We'll see if he's actually willing to take it to max or not.

He's well qualified to do so, more than the others. That is one of the four best seats on the grid, so it's a great opportunity for him.

Most folks in F1 are thinking the best team seats belong to Ferrari. But then, that's just most folks... lol Perez got a lifeline. And Albon goes to the bench, in much the same way Ocon did. I hope Ocon is able to cover Alonso. It seems overly optimistic that Alonso is going to be very successful for Alpine...

Ferrari finished 6th last season and Leclerc finished 8th, since they got caught cheating. Dunno about Alonso, Alpine may not be very good this year.

I view the upcoming season as Merc and a bunch of closer but no cigar hopefuls. We'll see if here is any really significant mid season development given the new spec in 22.

I'd like to see honda stick around, but selling off the f1 engine division is problematic to say the least, even if it could be had for a steal.

Ferrarri needs something because the team has totally lost its edge. Strategy blunders, poor execution, unreliablity, and frankly very poor driver decisions on the track. OTOH, LeClerc/Sainz makes for real strong exciting team of drivers.

Exile to Aston Martin? well funded, Merc tech, iconic brand and $17 mill a year. I'll take two.

He did? I had not heard that. I guess Albon is out, then. Good for Perez ... he found a way to keep the music going just a bit longer.
