Georgia Republicans speed sweeping elections bill restricting voting access into law

(CNN)Republicans in Georgia sped a sweeping elections bill into law Thursday, making it the first presidential battleground to impose new voting restrictions following President Joe Biden's victory in the state.

The bill passed the Georgia Senate by 34-20 late Thursday afternoon, and Republican Gov. Brian Kemp swiftly signed it.

The law imposes new voter identification requirements for absentee ballots, empowers state officials to take over local elections boards, limits the use of ballot drop boxes and makes it a crime to approach voters in line to give them food and water.

"It's like the Christmas tree of goodies for voter suppression," Democratic state Sen. Jen Jordan said on the Senate floor as lawmakers prepared to vote on the nearly 100-page bill Thursday.

    ... ctd: https://www.cnn.com/2021/03/25/politics/georgia-state-house-voting-bill-passage/index.html

Incredible! Outlawing giving people food and water while waiting in a needlessly long line to vote! And the lines are only so long because of other absurd restrictions designed to make voting more difficult!

The problem is that these RepubliCONs are above the law and above accountability, mainly because voters are either unable or unwilling to hold them to account.

Voting restrictions like no more massive late night ballot dumps. That's the kind of restrictions we're talking about in Georgia.

Outlawing giving people food and water while waiting in line to vote has nothing to do with so-called ballot dumps.

And the so-called ballot dumps are a myth. Counties in every state upload their counting results in batches as the process continues. These are not ballot dumps.

I noticed that CNN did not provide the bills name or a link to it. Talk about shoddy journalism. Wonder why they couldn't provide such easily obtainable information...

LINK: The House Special Committee on Election Integrity offers the following substitute to SB 202:

So, the purpose of this is to prevent solicitations of votes. And water is going to be provided via a self-service unattended receptacle.

Leave it to CNN to put it in the worst possible light that they can. And you fall for it each and every time.

By the by, that was the draft version. The bill that actually passed does not mention food or water or drink. At all.

    LINK:Senate Bill 202

2 pages long. That's it. That's all that passed. In other words CNN Lied to you.

It's a crime to give thirsty people water.

    Just let that sink in.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/25/us/politics/georgia-voting-law-republicans.html

Alan Powell, a Republican representative from northeastern Georgia, defended the state’s bill, saying it would bring needed uniformity to an electoral system that was pushed to the brink last year.

“The Georgia election system was never made to be able to handle the volume of votes that it handled,” he said. (Multiple audits affirmed the results of Georgia’s elections last year, and there were no credible reports of any fraud or irregularities that would have affected the results.) “What we’ve done in this bill in front of you is we have cleaned up the workings, the mechanics of our election system.”

A representative of the people literally said that it's important to ensure less people vote.

    WTF is going on, here?

Gosh, asking folks to demonstrate they are who they say they are at the polls is wrong? What if, for example, you applied the same standard liberals want to apply to gun ownership are applied to voting? Background checks? Waiting periods, the works. Do you suppose that liberals would suddenly allow drop off sites for gun distribution in the cities? how about mail out guns? Governments sends guns to everyone via the mail? Yes? Is this what you'd like to see broadly and generally used as the model for all things?

What is laughable here is that asking folks for an ID is akin to racism. And yet, the above requirements for gun ownership aren't. F'in hypocrites of the left in their full glory.

This is nothing new for the GOP, they just are doing it in plain view!

If your platform sucks and the majority dosent like it, you beg, borrow, and steal any vote you can!

Your title is wrong. It should read:

"Georgia Republicans pass sweeping elections bill restricting voter fraud and enhancing voter integrity."

Congratulations to Georgia for taking the issue seriously. If they had done it a year earlier, we'd have had a Republican majority in the US Senate today.

Where does it say they are going to "arrest" people? They are simply going to enforce certain things that weren't enforced before; a much-needed improvement for voter integrity.

It makes handing out water to people in line a crime.

Try committing a crime; you'll likely be arrested. 'Tis part of the process of crime enforcement.

You're there to vote, not to pass out water to people. No one gets arrested unless they refuse to obey the rules. I can understand why cheaters wouldn't like the rules, but for those who believe in voter integrity; we need the rules, now more than ever.

If you want food and water, go to a restaurant. If you want to vote, go to your voting precinct.

LOL. Good Samaritans did that because the lines were longer than expected, so people were waiting in the sun a long time.

Trump fanboi logic: "Since there is zero evidence of significant fraud, we're going to not let people hand out water to voters."

I also believe it was Papa Johns Pizza giving out free slices to the people waiting for hours....
Lets face it the Republican party is nothing close to what is was 50 years ago....
What ever the hell they are, its time to die like the Whig party!
They said they were for the military
    Said they were family values
    Said they were fiscal conservative
Said were for law and order
    Said blue lives mattered

They are a pathetic joke that had slogans and no morals.....Just look at all those scum during Clintons impeachment, they were having affairs while trashing Bill......You should of woken up then!

It's confusing, for sure. The answer to voting lines that are way too long, is to make them even longer. Standing out in the hot sun for hours, and god help you if you forgot to bring some water and a snack. Pathetic.

Republicans know one thing about elections. The more people who vote, the less likely they are to win, so, do everything and anything to ensure less people vote. Winning strategy.

Every American that registers to vote has the right to vote and no one can take that away. Period.

Those that stand in line to vote won't be allowed to have anything to eat or drink while standing in and they made it a law. Is that fair?

No such law was passed. Read post 4. Specifically the 2nd link. That is what passed in SB 202.

Well, this is exactly what the CNN cite says:
    https://www.cnn.com/2021/03/26/politics/georgia-voting-law-food-drink-ban-trnd/index.html

    [...]
"No person shall solicit votes in any manner or by any means or method, nor shall any person distribute or display any campaign material, nor shall any person give, offer to give, or participate in the giving of any money or gifts, including, but not limited to, food and drink, to an elector," the new law states.
    [...]

I don't care what CNN reports. They lied. I provided the exact bill in post 4, second link I provided. I did not get anyone else's opinion. I went straight to the source, and I even provided it for you and everyone else that cares to know the truth. Its from GA's .gov site as you can see in the link once you click on it. And right near the top of the bill it even says in bold letters "As Passed Senate". You cannot get any more definitive than that nor a more accurate source.

But hey, if you still wish to believe CNN over a direct link to Georgia's SB 202 bill's .gov site then be my guest. As the old saying goes... "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make em drink."

I agree, they should add a link, but they post the relevant part of the bill:
"No person shall solicit votes in any manner or by any means or method, nor shall any person distribute or display any campaign material, nor shall any person give, offer to give, or participate in the giving of any money or gifts, including, but not limited to, food and drink, to an elector".
