Scott’s story is a characteristic American narrative of redemption. “It’s the story that even though you fall or find yourself in a tough situation, it’s not the end of your story.” Scott’s story has already seen him become the first African American to serve in both the House and the Senate.

Scott is clearly the author of his own story. It’s not derivative, and it doesn’t fit into the hackneyed narrative provided by the Left for racial minorities. Scott’s originality and refusal to be stereotyped rankle his left-wing critics and confound much of the political media, which see America as a land not of opportunity but of oppression, a place where a man’s politics should be determined by his skin color or his class.

“America is not a racist country,” Scott bluntly and bravely declared to millions of television viewers who watched him deliver the Republican response to President Joe Biden’s first speech to Congress. “It’s backwards to fight discrimination with different types of discrimination. And it’s wrong to try to use our painful past to dishonestly shut down debates in the present.”

Tim Scott’s story is what America is all about. His story flies in the face of the of the propaganda of the progressive left. He’s the first African American to serve in both the house and the senate.

The democrat party and the secular progressive left hate it that there are conservative African Americans who counter their lie that America is a systemically racist nation.

Is there not something of a contradiction between his statements that "America is not a racist country" and "It’s backwards to fight discrimination with different types of discrimination."? The latter is suggesting more racism is being generated by misdirected efforts to combat the racism that already exists (and I agree with him on that). Also, if America wasn't a racist country, he wouldn't have been chosen to give that response because of his skin colour and you wouldn't be discussing that response in the context of his race.

Racism in America is much more complex, nuanced and multi-faceted than pretty much anyone there seems willing or able to accept and you're never going to be able to properly address the problems until you can.

And I'm sure you're going to furnish the proof that he was chosen to give that speech only because of his skin color right?

I never said "only" but it was clearly a factor since it was a direct factor in the content of the response.

He is also 33% of the GOP's African American representation in Congress, which is an impressive achievement for him and an utter disgrace for the Republican party. For those playing at home that is 3 out of 261 elected representitives. Party of Lincoln my ass. Meritocracy my ass - you only get numbers like that by selecting candidates by skin colour. Scott should be admired for being successful in a political party whose base is so obviously hostile to voting for African American candidates.

While many of Scott's opinions clearly represent a tiny minority of African Americans, those voices deserve to be heard. Good luck to him.

Because it was the only thing relevant in the context of the thread, which is the idea that America isn't racist because he as a black man could become a Republican politician. His skin colour didn't need to be the only factor in him being chosen to give the response, it being any kind of factor at all directly contradicts the idea that racism and racial divisions aren't very real and very significant ongoing issues in the USA, and ones that need acknowledging, understanding and addressing rather than dismissing out-of-hand.

So how do you know it was even a factor at all?

Because a white representative couldn't talk about America not being racist because he was able to become a successful Republican politician. His skin colour was a direct factor in part of the response (the part this thread is focused on).

So you assume someone else wrote the speech for him?

Why can't a white person say America is not racist? He would be telling the truth.

And many do. And that isn't new, many of the top black citizens in our history have commented on the distortions of racism:

In 1911, Booker T. Washington wrote:
There is a class of colored people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs-partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs.

Over a hundred years ago, he was addressing the same kind of people, blacks who would promote racial conflict for personal reasons of power and profit.

I often try to understand how people can think in ways that deny obvious reality and logic, which somehow allows them to embrace unrealistic nonsense. Another famous black American, Thomas Sowell, wrote an article on this about 15 years ago, when some of this distortion had become prevalent in our colleges and was spreading. It's enlightening on this topic as well, underlying motivations.

And yet Scott is one of only two Black Americans serving in Congress that is supported by the Republican Party. The problem isn't Scott - it's
the lack of support by Republicans of down-ticket minorities. Statistically, it begs the question about racism in the Republican Party.

Flawed analysist. To serve on a submarine in the US Navy you have to volunteer in writing. There are few blacks on submarines. Does that mean submariners are racist?

Depends on why Black sailors are staying away from that type of service, doesn't it?

Why are Black people staying away from serving in the Republican Party?
Is it because there is no support for entry level Black politicians on Republican tickets?

We don't support actual racism. We object to manufacturing claims of racism as a political weapon. We object to feeding propaganda to black people to encourage them to claim victim-hood, and to all people to encourage them to buy artificial racism and motivate hate- all in order to manipulate votes. If the democrats had those same values, we would be on the same page.

The entire concept of quota diversity is born of ignorance. The number of black people in political positions overall exceeds their proportion of population.
They are so determined to eliminate racism, that we see examples like Lori Lightfoot, the mayor of Chicago, refusing to be interviewed by any reporters that are white.
What we don't see is any left oriented media or black organizations objecting or even taking note; whereas if a white mayor refused to speak to a black reporter, they might well be setting fire to the city.

First- it's natural for all people to be somewhat tribal, meaning more comfortable with people who are like they are.
When a black person moves up in general society, one of the most common results is they become labeled "uncle toms" by their own people.
If you want to see racism, forget about the conditions when a black person walks through a white neighborhood; look at what happens when a white person walks through a black neighborhood.
In today's world, black people are not only being welcomed in every area, they are getting preference, in sympathy to all the whining about how unfairly they are treated... none of which is appreciated.
They are not in places they don't want to go- by their own choice, or if things are being done rationally, by the nature of their qualifications.

Maybe you can read their minds like you read the republicans minds.
Is it no support or no interest in the republican agenda? You tell. Why are you looking for a racist around every corner? Give it a break Dan.
