In one word, "Yes", it does indeed.

From Medscape here: Does obesity reduce life expectancy?

Why take the risk? Is eating too much food too often the best way to live? No!

But it has proven to be a pretty damn good way to die ...

True, but dying is either natural or unnatural - and the difference is defined by law ...

Why is it relevant if a person dies by natural or unnatural means?

A leisurely tour of any nursing home will cure the desire for longevity.

THE NECESSITY OF A NATIONAL HEALTHCARE SYSTEM FOR AMERICANS

Because there are two different ways of dying - one is natural and is brought about by old age. The other is due to an internal medical transformation of the body.

In any decent National Medical System it should make no difference whatsoever the healthcare that the individual should be able to assume. But, that does not happen to all Americans. Apparently only a select minority have access to a national healtcare system.

    MY POINT?

An enormous amount of Federal expenditure on the DoD at a time when there is nowhere in the world a threat to America. That money is being used needlessly*!

It could be put to Far Better Usage by supporting a National Healthcare System that improves the lifespan of Americans.

That is ALL I have been trying to get across in this forum ... !

*The DoD does support the cost of some of its people to assume an educational program leading to a higher post-secondary schooling degree. But why should a defense-entity be doing that when that responsibility should rightly lie with the national Dept. of Education?

Much of our obesity and 'over eating' is due to lack of nutrition, which is due to processed foods. One of the ways the food industry 'preserves' food is by removing many of the nutrients out of it, either as a result of the various preservation processes or in some cases deliberately to prevent bacteria from being able to grow in it. The human body will experience hunger as a result of being nutrient deficient in an attempt to get the nutrients that it needs to repair 'normal wear and tear' and fight disease. While our (US) relative prosperity certainly accounts for some of our obesity, much of it is a result of how highly we process our foods in an attempt to prevent product spoilage and prevent lawsuits that result from foodborne illness. We're essentially sterilizing ourselves to death. This is one reason I tend to try to avoid 'fat shaming'. There are people out there who exercise and try to eat 'healthy' but can't lose weight and keep getting sick because no one has bothered to tell them that their microwaveable non-gmo 'diet' bulk frozen meal packs are still just empty carbs because everything else was cooked out of them at the factory.

    1. I already suggested to you in other threads you've started that scaring people is not an effective to get your message across.

    2. Maybe you should go back and read you original because there is nothing that even remotely speaks to a National Healthcare System.

    BETTER YET, 2020!

US Discretionary Spending pie-chart, 2020. One last gift of Donald Dork to the spendthrift Replicants:

Note the 57% of all US Federal spending goes to the DoD!

Note also that "Education" gets just 5%! Imagine if we took 20% of that all blue-part and spent in the tiny green-part (Education)! And we sent our kids into a Post-secondary schooling programs to enhance their learning!!!

America and its Americans would be far, far better off in the future - where almost all of "Industry*" has become "Services orientated". Which requires a higher-level of post-secondary degrees to meets its needs for competent administration!

And if Uncle Sam started funding state post-secondary educational-spending, more of our kids would be following such a program!

From here: What Percent of High School Graduates Go to College?

Where is the War that must support that level of DoD-spending shown above! In the addle-headed minds of the Replicant Party and its contingent of supporters who's businesses depend upon DoD-funding!

As a nation, more and more jobs are developing in the Services Industries (because the Manufacturing Industry jobs have hightailed to other countries). We'd be better-off spending money on Post-Secondary Education reducing its onerous cost (around $25K per school year) to one-tenth that cost to the student ($2500).

That would require reorganizing nationally state-run post-secondary institutions-of-higher-learning to accommodate the students nationwide. The yearly number of post-secondary students per-state is not uniform throughout the US ...

The truth SHOULD scare people ... into action!

Which is why I am "speaking to it"! This is a debate-forum" and debate requires some intelligence to pursue and exchange (without your petty accusations).

Refute my arguments with factual evidence! Go for it!

    Just try ... !

I am not opposed to the idea of a national healthcare system in the US.
    images.jpg

I believe that everyone has some misgivings about how taxpayer money is spent. Personally, I think it's repulsive that we spend millions/billions on space exploration while some people are homeless and hungry.
Which is your opinion and you are entitled to it.
I'm not sure you can meet your stated objective by being combative. It's possible to have a difference of opinion without all the drama. I converse with countless people I disagree with here and elsewhere but I've never been an "all or nothing" thinker.
Can you connect the dots on how that relates to anything in your OP and stated objective?

P.S. I see that you didn't take into consideration my suggestion to try decaf. ;-)

That's not true for everyone. I'd take an ugly truth over a pretty lie every day of the week.
Was it necessary for you to be demeaning? A person is not ignorant simply because they disagree with you and you aren't going to change anybody's mind by acting like a jerk.
Can you point out any of my statements where I did that?

Of course, the world can see where you did that many times over, but I'd be interested in your providing evidence that I've engaged in it.

Scared people don't take action. It takes not being scared to be receptive to an idea.
My point is your original post says nothing about the national healthcare system. Most users aren't going to scroll through pages and pages of comments to try to figure out what you are talking about.

I didn't make any petty accusations. You really should think about decaf.
There is nothing for me to refute. I believe a national health care system would probably be a good move.

So, what do you want to fight about next?

Obesity is a huge problem (No pun intended). When I went to school, there was one fat kid. By the time I was picking my own kids up from school, they are everywhere. As far as life expectancy, that cannot be measured until death, so its is likely far worse that people think.

People don't care about dying that's their business. Just don't expect doctors and nutritionists and other professionals to tell you that you're healthy that would be lying to you.

Obesity does indeed reduce lifespan. That's obvious.
But there has been some research that has shown that women who are just a little bit fat live longer than women that are not.
That really should not be surprising. A little bit of "extra meat on your bones" will help avoid wasting away, since there is also the phenomena of many elderly persons continuing to lose weight and becoming skin and bones.

I think that the obesity problem is lack of exercise. Furthermore, I think that obesity strains the heart. Clogged arteries and extra blood vessel networks to pump blood through, combined with a weak heart, are sure to shorten a person's lifespan.
