More than four-fifths of surveyed Americans believe that freedom of religion is an important aspect of a “healthy American society,” according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports and Summit Ministries.

In findings announced Tuesday, the report found that 67% of respondents said freedom of religion is “very important to a healthy American society,” while 15% said it was “somewhat important to a healthy American society.”

Some 9% of respondents said they believe freedom of religion was either “not very important” or “not at all important” to a “healthy American society,” while 9% said they were unsure.

Party affiliation only offered slight variance, as 86% of Republican respondents said freedom of religion is very important or somewhat important, while 83% of Independents and 79% of Democrats also responded that it was very or somewhat important.

The poll also found that 50% of Americans believe that churches and faith-based charities should not be required by law to hire people who oppose their religious beliefs, while 20% of Americans say they should be required…

Religious liberty is a fundamental right. It is in fact one of the inalienable God given rights the founders wrote and spoke about. Freedom of religion and the free exercise there of is our first freedom.

Freedom of religion is but on of many free will choices God has given us. Government should not by policy or law step in between a person and their free excercise there of of their religious beliefs in their citizens daily life.

And I am sure none of these people saying how important it is would mind a Mosque being built in their neighborhood or have a problem with the local Wiccan Society holding services honoring Gaia at the local park.

It’s proper place is as our first liberty. Our premiere and most important inalienable right. No right we have has more or greater value than that one. That is its proper place in the greater scheme of things.

    All rights are EQUAL!

Trying to PROMOTE freedom FROM religion ABOVE the rest is LUDICROUS.

There would be NO freedom FROM religion WITHOUT freedom of expression, voting, assembling, due process, etc, etc, etc.

Unfortunately, some use that argument to curtail equally important rights, which is why it needs to occasionally take a backseat...

We have freedom of religion in this country to worship as we see fit or not all. There is no such thing as freedom from religion.

Freedom FROM religion is a movement to make sure that religion plays no role in government. Freedom OF religion is a right I support. And that would be all religions, not just Christianity.

It's like the same argument about voting. People want you to have freedom of religion (or the right to vote) as long as you're playing on the same team they are.

There is no way there can be freedom from religion without trampling on some peoples freedom of religion. No one can be guaranteed full freedom from religion and religious expression 24/7/365 and there are references to religion in government that have already psssed constitutional muster.

IF your religion includes a duty to persecute others who do not worship or believe as you do then is that duty included in your freedom of religion? I argue that many see the Freedom of religion as including a duty to persecute non-believers or divergent practitioners. Frex gay marriage. Do you agree with that freedom to persecute and if not how do you square that with saying you support freedom of religion when many religions do include that actual positive and stated DUTY to persecute nonbelievers?

It is a co-equal right , along with other rights, like speech and peaceful assembly. In addition, your right to worship cannot infringe on my right not to.

It also does NOT mix with the administration of government. Religion and religious organizations need to be kept at a very great distance from public money.

You can have freedom of religion without having it influence policy and law making. Hence separation of Church and State.

Not really. How do you prevent people who are believers from passing laws that in some way resemble what they believe?

If they VIOLATE the Constitution or Individual Rights those theist laws are vacated by the courts. That is what happed with both RvW and DOMA.

Then I take it you would support changing the Pledge of Allegiance to include
“… one nation, under (God / Allah / Yahweh / Jehovah / other deity as preferred by the individual, or reference removed entirely) …”

I'm pretty sure it was more than 18% of the country who once supported the idea of a Muslim ban in the US, so I'm going to take that 82% statistic with a grain of salt

There are all sorts of laws based on religious views.

How many cities/counties out there still restrict booze sales on Sunday mornings? This is based on nothing but religion.

And if my religion has no problem with abortion, are you still going to support religious freedom?

I think that would be quite simple - if the law they create lacks the foundation required to meet the standards of the Constitution, it doesn't get passed.

This is really dangerous. Religious freedom is how you get parents who refuse to treat a sick kid with proper meds, and the child dies. You’re free to worship my shoes if you want, but you cannot expect anyone else to respect your silliness.

Unfortunately the religious extremists in this country keep passing un-Constitutional laws just so they can try and challenge the Constitution in front of the Supreme court.
