In a unanimous vote Tuesday night, San Jose’s city council approved a national first that will see gun owners being forced to compensate taxpayers for the spiraling costs of gun violence. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, gun owners in California’s third-largest city will be required to take out liability insurance for their firearms, and pay an annual tax that will help fund emergency responses to gun-related calls.

In a news release ahead of Tuesday night’s vote, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said: “While the Second Amendment protects the right to bear arms, it does not require taxpayers to subsidize gun ownership... We won’t magically end gun violence, but we stop paying for it. We can also better care for its victims, and reduce gun-related injuries and death.”

Insurance and tax liabilities have largely been found to be constitutional and registration is allowed for other fundamental rights such as voting and protest so this will likely be found to be constitutional once this is appealed to the SCOTUS as long as precedent is used in the reasoning. Seems to be a fair compromise between gun control and doing nothing.

If successfully implemented I believe this will ultimately become commonplace.

Fewer and fewer people are going to go through the "legal" process of buying a gun. Registering guns that are inherited is going to grind to a halt.

In a sane world we would tax the criminals.

This is penalizing innocent people for the acts of others. This won’t last.

Taxpayers don’t subsidize gun ownership. That is an asinine statement by the mayor. No taxpayer paid for my guns or Ammo. No, this is literally a tax on a right and will not stand constitutionally.

And this is why not a single gun I own is on record anywhere.

This is insane. My guns have never hurt anyone why should I be punished for owning them?

Sadly we do it all the time. How much extra do you pay on your auto insurance for "uninsured drivers" coverage?

I see a business opportunity here. Someone should open a gun depository in a neighboring community. That would relieve the gun owner of having a gun in San Jose eliminating any perceived responsibility. I always thought San Diego was California's third largest city.

Would you also tax TV sets and mattresses?

Kind of stupid idea. Being a gun owner does not make you even remotely complicit, just because you own guns, for the actions of others.

This tax penalizes people with no justification that doesn't seem to have political spite at it's core.

The vast majority of crime that is gun related is committed by people who illegally are possessing that firearm. Domestic violence cost 5.8 billion in US medical care annually with the vast majority of perpetrators being men. What San Jose is proposing is in essence taxing the female for the actions of their male domestic partners actions.

When they start causing massive damage absolutely.

I don’t even necessarily agree with a tax but I do agree with both an insurance and a registration

The party that claims to care about the poor is pricing them out of their rights. The poor live in neighborhoods where they are more likely to need a firearm for protection and now, the criminals have been given another advantage over good people.

This is another reason Dems wanted to allow inmates voting. What criminal wouldn't vote for easier victims?

    That is an absurd comparison.

There are penalties for men who abuse their spouse but none for someone that “loses” a weapon, fails to secure it or gifts/sells it to someone that cannot legally own one.

Insurance and registration would be the best way to tackle these issues, not a tax imo.

You have to hand it to the anti-gun crowd, they will leave NO stone unturned in their never ending quest to restrict firearms ownership for the VAST number of those who possess and use them lawfully, yet turn a blind eye to the revolving jailhouse door for those who DON'T.

They could do a one gun discount if you are that concerned about “the poor”. Think we should also do that for food, car insurance and tax, and home expenses.

Since you are so worried about the poor?

After they are murdered by criminals, their food, car expenses, and housing costs go down significantly. This is another example of gun control not being from a position of concern for human life.

First, I apologize if I missed your link as could not find one, but I do not see in the text about anything to do with "lost" weapons. This proposal text you pasted is every legal gun owner paying for those criminals that illegally have firearms that are committing crimes. You could take every weapon from legal gun owners and guess what?! There would still be gun violence .

The only way to tackle illegal guns is to seize them and then prevent new weapons from entering the black market.

If guns were registered it would be easy to find any patterns of short selling and areas of high theft
