Generally, the intent was military targets. However, precision bombing during WWII was far from precise. At 30,000 feet, the mean accuracy was about quarter mile for our aircraft. That means that most of the bombs would be within a quarter of a mile and many of them would miss by a mile or more.

Carpet bombing was never meant to be precise, it was designed to destroy everything

And what was the military target in Hiroshima

Hiroshima was chosen as the first target due to its military and industrial values. As a military target, Hiroshima was a major army base that housed the headquarters of the Japanese 5th Division and the 2nd Army Headquarters. It was also an important port in southern Japan and a communications center.

Couldn't agree more. I don't want statues of traitors in my community, but we're supposed to decide these things democratically.

Hiroshima and everyone and everything in it was the target.

We dropped two atomic bombs, had another one in the Pacific on the way, and could have had another ten by the end of the year. It was quite clear we were going to nuke them until they gave up. Invade? Maybe, but we would have nuked their defense forces. 400,000 Americans had already died and that was enough for the American people.

The only thing that prevented the Japanese from surrendering prior to the bombs was our condition that they surrender their god-emporer to us as well. They simply werent capable of accepting that condition. We ended up leaving him there anyway, which begs the question- why not have simply let them keep their god-emporer and surrendered everything else instead of dropping nukes?

I assume everyone knew I wasn't serious about Arby's--besides, there's no way Arby's would agree to do it. But there is a serious matter of the statues and what to do with them if the government decides to take them down.

Me? I would urge council to take them down if I lived in that city, but I also oppose tearing them down without permission. If they wreck the statues without an okay, they should be replaced and the we can decide whether or not to take them down.

As for the thread being "bait" ... get serious.

Jesus, the mental gymnastics you just did to connect these two unrelated issues must have been a sight to behold.

    They'd rape the women too

But how much of that really happened? It's hard for me to credit that Lincoln would countenance that entirely, Then again Lincoln was a strange sort himself, quite clinically depressed over his mother's death for most of his life yet nearly gleeful over all the men Grant slaughtered.

Wow, you should really take that advice to heart.

You: Ya think?........WW2 killed 400,000 people and Covid had killed 600,000...Sorry you cant see death of Americans no matter what way...........But hey, just whistle past the graveyard proud patriot!

Me: The Death toll from WW2 is allot more than 409,000 people.

    Soviet Union 8,800,000-10,700,000 24,000,000

    United States 416,800 418,500
    Yugoslavia 446,000 1,000,000

Then You post these stats that prove what I said correct. I was talking about WW2 in its entirety. Way to jump the gun, and make yourself look foolish.

Next, it’s ridiculous that you would compare a world wide pandemic, to a world war. Do I have to explain to you how they are completely different events?

Well, not by everyone. General George Thomas was a Virginian. It was complicated. For average soldiers, there was a draft. We're looking at leaders, not grunts.

Sherman maintained, both then and later, that he had to destroy the South's ability to make war or the conflict seemed likely to drag on forever. That exact strategy was widely and purposefully used by both sides in WWII. It's a major reason for the modern Maxim that you can't win a war by bombing, since terror bombing just strengthens the victim's resolve. (though present-day war has gone far beyond that)

Sherman was a great general. In his 1930 book on Sherman, Sir Basil Liddell Hart called Sherman the first modern general. Sherman was a master of the indirect attack and working with multiple objectives.

September 2, 1864 was the day Sherman saved the United States by taking Atlanta and undermining Democrat George McClellan's election promise to negotiate with the South. Lincoln was behind until the fall of Atlanta and appeared to be on his way to defeat in November.

    :) :)

Americans are pissed off about a lot they know isn't the other side's fault.

January 6 was a riot, not an insurrection. Most Americans want change, not a revolution. Rightwing loudmouths included.

Black people are discriminated against and that should be addressed. They've suffered long enough and it's their turn to be a priority, not the priority. But not getting change fast enough doesn't excuse violence, burning, and looting. Same goes for white folks who have their grievances.

Joe? I don't know what the hell he's doing. In British Columbia which is diverse as anywhere in North America except maybe--maybe--Toronto or New York. Dr. Bonnie Henry, the provincial health officer, has gone to leaders of every darn ethnic, racial, and religious group and said to the group leaders, "What can we help you do to protect your people?" Every time there's an outbreak, she's there with vaccine.

In the last three days, BC with 5.1m people had 123 new cases. 40 per day. They're opening up, people are wearing masks, or not, depending on their thinking and with the agreement of the store. Most people are getting vaccinated.

Now, Joe talks like he gets it, but I don't see the public outreach.

If a state doesn't cooperate, get the feds in there. Dispense the vaccine to anyone who wants it through churches, ethnic and racial organizations, white supremacists, Antifa and people you have to spend time on by answering their questions. We're looking after everyone, he should say.

Right now, when cases are going up, get in there with vaccine. Go, Joe, go.

    Invite Trump to participate.
