    No exports means no imports.

    A protectionist economy?

Do some math...duh...the US only has 325 million consumers...the world has 7 billion more!

All that the US has achieved, all that Americans have at their disposal, and you're still whining...

    Stop exporting jobs/industry, not goods.

Exporting industry is not such a bad thing overall. It could be managed better. In the high-tech world, people in BFE aren't going to keep slaving for a living now that they are very much aware of how the other 80% live. Sharing the wealth keeps them peaceful.

When you "share that wealth" it ends up decreasing the level of inequality between different countries but also increasing the level of inequality within individual countries.

So? The doctor and lawyer should make more than the factory worker with a high school diploma or 2 year trade school who should make more than the paperboy and all of those should make less than Bill Gates. Poverty based on consumption and not the official poverty rate has declined significantly since the 1980's. That is because allowing industries to go overseas makes goods cheaper, which increases their volume of sales, which increases the net revenue of the Gates/Bezo's crowd. (opens as a pdf: https://leo.nd.edu/assets/339909/2018_consumption_poverty_report_1_.pdf )

Now if you want to argue that increased consumption is super bad for the environment, I am right there with you. Economically, however, income inequality is pretty damn good in the US. The only real people being left completely without a rock to stand on are those in deep poverty who largely are the mentally ill, addicts, dropouts with too many kids, etc. They are the people who are going to be on the bottom whether Bill Gates is worth half as much or the Middle Class were worth ten times as much.

Um no, you completely misinterpreted what I was talking about.
Never just quote someone else's single post without looking at the context of the conversation it was in.

The person I quoted was using the term "sharing the wealth" to talk about the US offsourcing manufacturing production to China.

LOL. The person you quoted was me and you truncated my post in your response, and yes, I stand by my post. Apparently you do not.

we just need speed limits, to even the playing field for American workers

doesn't just protect American workers, if a place like China knew early on that we would raise import taxes if they tried to sell too low, then could have paid their employees more, those keeping wages up overseas too

In a global economy industry goes where it can be most efficient and effective.

Since people in Europe own dogs and cats, and require dog and cat food, and it's a very large market, it makes perfect sense for Purina to locate a facility in that area. The same applies to all other export potential...like automobiles. Many times industry must locate where raw materials are located, where there is abundant and qualified labor, etc.

And why do you ignore the bottom line called profit? Like it or not, it's much less expensive to produce certain products outside of the US. If you force these products to be manufactured in the US, the prices will be much higher, and the US won't be able to compete in the global economy...

It's an open global market...NO SPEED LIMITS! Either a company or nation can compete or not?

Import taxes is a solution to nothing...

    .

Since the end of WW2 the USA has been systematically destroyed... racially, culturally, morally, economically, etc.

Ironically, Putin has repeatedly revealed who the destroyers are. Putin repeatedly glorifies marxists as the winners of WW2.

Not if it is properly regulated to properly maintain the nation's internal economy. Obviously, the country needs to prioritize sustainability and its citizens success over global free trade.

The last thing we want to do is whore out America and Americans to global corporate interests.

I voted for Trump... but I didn't agree on everything he said and did.

If you think Trump was the worst... you're in for a big shock [no matter what your politics.]

The worst is yet to come.

I suggest if the US was to ban imports many nations will ban US exports. Other than for emergency scenarios, the import/export picture needs to be somewhat equitable.

Why do you suppose beer or soda, or even cars, are produced all over the world? It's not a conspiracy. It's reasonable business sense. Stuff is going to be produced wherever it makes the most sense!

    Don't mix politics with trade...

I don't support banning imports. But I do think we could rely on our own industry for the things we need if we decided to, and I think we'd all be a lot better off if we did.
