Do you think the Biden Administration's policy of not sending massive reinforcements to prop up the Afghanistan government in the face of Taliban resurgence will ultimately help or end up hurting the Democrat Party?

Democrats, right now, are in full-blown attack Trump and Desantis mode. Their hope is to pin the results of Biden's Afghanistan actions on Trump. I think this is going to backfire and hurt them, ultimately.

It is a prediction. Watch and see. Over the coming weeks, as the disaster unfolds, democrats will lament that Biden's hands were tied and he was forced to follow the timeline set forth by Trump, and that the humanitarian toll Afghanistan is suffering is due to republican foreign policy failure in general, and Trump in particular. We are already seeing that narrative in play.

I think this tactic will ultimately backfire and hurt them. Biden is, after all, CiC.

I guess we'll see how petty they are. One thing for sure, we're going to see a lot of Biden memes.

I think it will hurt them, the reason I think that is that it's a bad move to leave Afghanistan , look what has happened the Taliban has full control of the country now and there pissed , more chances of terror attacks etc for all those who have crossed them , the world isn't safe, they will get revenge on us Afghanistan will now be terrorist capital of the world once again

It would take 100,000 troops to retake Afghanistan while we are in the middle of a pandemic, our economy is fragile, China is a growing threat, and the debt is high. This is a horrible horrible idea. Afghanistan has virtually no strategic value to us and if they want to become a radical Islamic state, then let them.

But yeah politically pulling out will hurt them especially if some Americans get killed. The Taliban might do a purge of American sympathizers and that news isn't going to help Biden.

Bad question. Leaving Afghanistan isn’t the problem. Biden’s execution and complete cluelessness is.

Seeing it already on this very site. Dems trying to pin this on Trump. Last I looked the potus is Xiden. He made the decision. He’s missing in action. The bloods on his hands.

This rushed departure and the FALL of the AFGHAN GOVERNMENT all over the news can't help, but I don't know how much people will base their voting decisions on it. It's not the worst kind of "loss" we can face, ending a forever war and getting our people and our friends out of there. It should also help if Afghanistan remains peaceful going forward and actually forms a government that is at least not a brutal terror regime.

On one hand I see why Biden will blame the GOP. If Trump had won this would have happened months ago and it would have been worse. But it didn't. Biden pushed back the deadline already. I don't know what else he could have done, or if he could have done something differently.

I think so. Bottom line is most people are tired of the endless middle east wars. I praised Trump's decision to leave Afghanistan so even though we did not leave gracefully all that matters to me is that we will be out. I hate the idea of potentially conceding Afghanistan to China but they are bettered positioned to deal with Afghanistan issues than the US. China will be investing 400 Billion in Iran and they need a land route. I am sure they are going to offer Afghanistan tons of investments to get that route along with the rights to exploit their vast mineral resources.

I'm not sure it would take that many.

But one thing is true, the longer the US waits on the sidelines, the more troops it will take later to reverse the situation.

If the US had put in even 5000 troops three months ago (June 2021) to counter the recent Taliban resurgence, I think that would have prevented this offensive. The longer it is allowed to go on, the more momentum they will gain.

Now that they have been allowed to capture weapons and supplies, and are taking whole cities, they have more resources, and more will join them when they see that they are winning and taking over.

I think it's a wash for right now, but I think ultimately the Democrats will benefit. By 2022 Afghanistan will be kept out of the news as we get close to the elections. And the thousands of refugees will provide good vote fodder in years to come (although that could backfire ie Cubans and Vietnamese).

We have done many troop surges in the past but the Taliban just hides off in caves until the surge is gone. Its true that more troops would have improved the situation but we would need a permanent occupation. But then whats the strategic benefit? Unlike Iraq, Afghanistan is very mountainous and much easier for a guerilla war. Trump was 100% right on wanting to leave. Its better to focus on the East Asian theatre instead.

I wish the withdrawal would have been more structured but I am glad we finally had a president that ended this two trillion dollar war

What is coming will be used by the right to badger Biden (even through it was a failed campaign of their kingmaker) but I think it will help Democrats in future elections as they can run on ending wars.

I think it will be politically neutral, most are just happy it is over

in a few months, the right will try to claim credit for Trump and the left will claim credit for Biden

    watch and see

imagine if Biden had done this

"Top Taliban leaders are among the 5000 that Trump released last year over everyone's objections"

    https://www.alternet.org/2021/08/trump-taliban/

why didn't Trump leave that bargaining chip to Biden to get our people home safe?

Two trillion dollars were spent on that war (past tense).

Now by completely abandoning it, and refusing to give the Afghan government any support when the tide suddenly turned, that two trillion dollar investment has been flushed down the drain.

Continuing to have a small presence in that country would have been far less expensive than what had already been spent.

By claiming "the war was a waste" or "the war was unwinnable", it is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

No one believed the installed Afghanistan government would persist — people just didn’t think it would happen so rapidly. The ceasefire was only temporarily delayed

It wasn’t an investment to begin with, it was full of corruption and theft
