Should racial representation on TV be proportional to percentage of national population?

It's a double trauma. First, they are discriminated against and, secondly, they are blamed for saying they've been discriminated against. It's systemic and insidious.

 

I got other, it should be determined by the story. If you're in a story about a slave gang in antebellum Mississippi then it would be silly to have them all being Swedish,

Seriously, my problem is the gays. Pure Gays are only 10% of men by even the most generous estimates. Yet stories nowadays have gay plot points more than most romances have ripped bodices. I don't mind it with girls but with men it's just not interesting to me

 

Well, if it's true what you and the OP thinks about Blacks being over represented on TV. Shouldn't there be far MORE blacks at the Oscars then ?

 

Many Blacks are just more talented actors! Ever approached it from that angle???

 

I'm sure companies feel pressured to represent all races and sexual preferences....because the activists are out there waiting to pounce. I'm sure blond actresses are coloring their hair black or brunette in order to find work.....but its not a harmful thing to see this representation as we should view all as American people.

 

I don't watch TV so I don't care.

You may be onto something! Actually, we've been watching less and less network TV all the time, and when we do it's usually something we found on Amazon Prime Video or Netflix. On cable, we watch "Animal Planet" and cooking shows more than anything else.

You finally get so repelled by all the mountainous stacks of commercial crap and politically-manipulated horseshit that you can't find many reasons to go on watching anything generated by anybody's damn network -- Left or Right. Sometimes I think that if I have to see one more commercial for a pharmaceutical drug, or a law firm, that my brains will turn into oatmeal....

The four most commonly heard words on network TV? "We'll be right back...."

I lost interest after shows like Happy Days...I was utterly insulted by TV and the way they treat you like an idiot. I do have a couple of shows I will watch like, Duckman, The Critic, early Simpsons, early Family Guy, Rick and Morty but generally I dislike the genres that exist and usually watch a lot of old film noir movies.. Commercials are another insult to intelligence. As far as races acting I don't care as long as they can act I consider all people humans long before I try to identify their race.

 

Does that mean that they have to find ways to lure you by subliminal messaging?

That's appropriate, part of the story, the way it should be. But then you have these things where it seems "we have 3 couples here, so one has to be two guys," no, no it doesn't

 

They are not equal. One group is 60%, the others much smaller.

If that's not reflected in media, then racial manipulation is happening. Seems to me that that is just as much of a problem as it was in 1950. It doesn't get to be not racism just because someone calls it 'balance'.

 

I consider romantic relationship to be a waste of time yet many folks seem interested in them.

 

What is happening is the saturation of a medium for maximum commercial viability to sell you crap and get you to think it's ok.

 

It's unreasonable and manipulative to have more gay characters than the ratio of gay people in broader society. That would be a tiny percentage, but as you say - every single tv show and advert (plus at least half of current films) has gay characters. It's an absurdity.

 

But we don't have elements of them in EVERY story, do we?

 

Lol I feel you, but that's just advertising in general. Be it billboards, magazines or internet ads. They all use subliminal messaging.

 

Yeah because sexual interactions and relationships sells. Ever hear how many songs involve relationships gone bad? It is a multi-billion dollar a year industry.
