A woman was raped on a train, and even though the rape happened pretty much in plain sight and out in the open, the other passengers on the train didn't help her.

One of the other passengers even stood around filming the sexual assault with his phone.

The incident happened October 13, 2021, at a little after 9:00pm.
This happened in Philadelphia, in the United States.

    How could this happen?

Many of us cannot imagine how this could happen. Surely one of those passengers would have been willing to get help her or do something. No, apparently not.

The rape went on for 8 minutes.

Maybe the first thing we have to understand is where this happened. It was a big city area, people who have lived in a big city all their life.
Read up on the 1964 murder of Kitty Genovese in New York City and something in psychology that is called the "bystander effect". As Kitty Genovese was being brutally murdered right outside her apartment and screaming for help, there were 38 other people who saw or heard the murder taking place, but none of them did anything to help her or even bother calling the police.

In a big city with crowds of people, where most of the day to day faces are not recognizable, there is something called social alienation. People start feeling they have no social connections, surrounded by big crowds of people all the time they don't know. And they feel that it is someone else's job to take care of things. After all, in a crowd with so many other people, surely someone else will take care of the problem, or provide the help to someone who needs help. People don't want to be bothered helping someone or getting involved when there are so many other people around them. People just pretend not to notice and try to ignore the problem or walk away, if they can.

Then there is also the mentality of using force in these places. Using physical force and violence, even when it comes to self defense or assisting another person, is not looked upon as well as it is in more rural parts of the country. There's a common perception that it is the job of the police to handle that sort of thing. Trying to defend someone else could even get you in big legal trouble. Who would want to risk that to protect a stranger?

Philadelphia train rape: Riders who recorded Fiston Ngoy and didn't call 911 may be charged | MEAWW

And here's the real clencher: The rape suspect is an illegal immigrant who came from the Congo.
Fiston Ngoy: Rape suspect on Philadelphia train is illegal Congolese immigrant | Daily Mail Online

He had previously been convicted of "sex abuse" and jailed for 120 days, but was not deported. Even though he was illegally residing in the country.

    from the article:

He pleaded guilty to the sex charge in 2017 in Washington DC and was sentenced to 120 days in jail, and was then placed in immigration detention in January 2018.
However, Ngoy was never deported, because an immigration judge granted him a 'withholding of removal' in March 2019, after an appeals board found that his sex crime was not a 'serious crime' that made him eligible for removal.

Describing police review of surveillance video, "We were watching to see if somebody put a phone up to their ear indicating they might be calling 911. Instead, what we saw was people holding their phone up as if they were recording or taking pictures."

I would of said the guy that recorded it should be given a metal, until I heard he did not call 911 and report it

as far as not stepping in, sadly many are too afraid, do not blame them for that, but they could have dialed 911

The perpetrator was a minority; were anyone to interfere, they would surely be called racists.

And I'm only being half sarcastic.

Big cities tend to be full of folks with different values than those who live elsewhere. It's just how it is; sad but that's the reality and the raped woman paid the price.

Why would they report it? So they can be charged with a racist hate crime?
This is another woman raped thanks to the policies of the left
    Nice job lefties!

    How could this happen?

Very easily, over generations of dependent and oblivious and morally compromised Americans.

Just 20 years ago, as most churches remained silent, most Americans were conditioned to believe that torture was OK.

MLK used to preach that silence about such crimes was tantamount to the crimes themselves. He was right then, and now.

Mesmerized by their "smart phones", most americans have no sense of right and wrong. Conditioned generations ago to pee in a bottle to get a job or prove one's 'innocence', today's crowds happily stand in line to take a noxious cocktail into their bodies.

Considering the act, I may have gone with "No Values, no courage" :eyepopping:

I'm sure the leftist "Women's right to her body" and the ever popular "Reason why abortions are so important" will be along shortly! But I must admit, I never factored in this openly rape sort of thing!

The Kitty Genovese story was a terrible murder! But the story of 38 witnesses is indeed false.

I've lived in big cities and in very rural areas.
The only difference is the density of the population.
There are good people and bad in both.
I have noticed that many in the rural areas have the same notion as you expressed, though. They tend to ignore or be unaware of what is actually around them.
It's sad that no one would step up. Some are no doubt afraid of being involved.
If people would have some more courage, this and other criminal activity could be curbed. Hard to blame them for being afraid, though, but it's the only way it's going to change. The police can't be everywhere all the time.

Citation needed. They named a mental/soci condition after her. The theory is that everyone thought someone else was calling for help. So we're advised, for instance, when in a crowd and needing help, single someone out. Most people do want to be helpful.

Your parties policies would force her to carry that baby to term. Rape victim or not.

As for the story, being that I have a CCW, I would tell that ****er to leaver her alone, if he got violent with me, well....

A Democrat woman raped by Democrat policy fruition surrounded by other Democrats in a Democrat city.

Democrats here can at least admit they failed: nobody passed the man a condom, right?

And guess what a typical Democrat solution to this situation would be? That’s right: government subsidized bowls of free condoms in buses. Because managing symptoms to problems instead of solving them is always the “solution”.

The only difference between the Dems here and those on that bus are the ones here talk a lot more.

I can understand not physically stepping in, but yelling at the guy, and calling 911 should have been an automatic reaction.

I wonder if the people videoing could be held criminally liable....

Was the incident supposed to be a public test? Lets see. Minority rapist. check. woman in public. check. Rape in public. check. uninterested bystanders. check.

One hopes the woman got free medical attention where she was given a rape kit and perhaps some counseling on plan b.

Democrats response? move along nothing to see here. Just the entitled exercising their entitlement.

whats your point? Again you are dismissing the rape and going on to talk about post rape pregnancies
How about we avoid the rape in the first place?
    Too logical?
    Here’s the deal
Of someone stepped in and maybe hit the guy over the head with something the headline would read “white supremacists violently bludgeons black migrant in an act of racial hate”
If they were all white here is the headline “brave bystander saved woman from rapist”
Again. Nobody helping here is the fault of the left
I do think it’s sweet that you are concerned with what happens after the rape. Very sweet!

I disagree with carrying the babies of rapists to term, so you and I are on the same page there.

You have a CCW, I don't. You surprise me more with each sentence. Good for you.

Which simply isn't true. She has the opportunity to immediately take action. Why do you suppose she might want to wait? Plan B is right there.

It's too bad someone didn't have a gun then there would have been no need to get into a physical altercation. I can't believe no one especially women didn't have pepper spray on them. And was the woman being raped suppose to point at someone and tell them to call 911? Give me a break. **** those bystanders, they should all be charged.

The bystanders were pathetic. In an ideal world, half that train would have been armed, ready to help out their fellow man. One of the reasons I would never live in a city.

That's been debunked. I'm not saying the "bystander effect" isn't real, I'm just saying its application is anachronistic.

There are several issues with the Genovese incident. The first issue is quite common. It's called the "someone else will do it" syndrome. There's no point in you calling the police, because, surely, someone else already has, right?

There's no point in telling anyone that some kid is threatening to go postal at the high school, because, surely, someone else will do that, right?

The second issue lies with the social code in effect in 1964, which was the same social code in effect in 1864 and the same social code in effect in 1764 and 1664 and even in 1,964 BCE.

That social code says you do not interfere in other people's relationships. Ever.

It makes no difference if that relationship is marital, dating or familial, you do not interfere, because it is not your place to interfere.

So, if you're a neighbor, teacher or doctor, and you see signs of physical or sexual abuse in a child, you keep your big mouth shut because it's none of your damn business.

If you're a neighbor, co-worker or doctor and you see signs of spousal abuse, you keep your festering gob shut, because it's none of your damn business.

If people are have a lover's quarrel, then you butt out, because it ain't none of your damn business.

And, so what if she's being raped?

It's 1964. Men are allowed to rape their wives and also their girlfriends, because sex is their job and women are 2nd Class Citizens anyway and have to obey their husbands and lovers 'cause Jesus the god-thing said so.

Besides, we all know she asked for it, right?

It would be another 30 years, around 1994 that States started enacting laws that compelled teachers and doctors and other professionals like social workers to report signs of sexual or physical abuse in a child, or signs of spousal abuse to law enforcement.

But, the idea that women asked to be raped was still prevalent in society.

There's also something called the Woke Crowd and nobody wants to be lambasted and harangued on social media for violating someone's civil rights since a certain segment of the population is allowed to commit crimes to make up for slavery and discrimination.

Population density increases have a variety of ill effects. It becomes easy not to care about the numerous nameless faces that exist around us. In fact, those nameless faces often become nuisances; always in our way -crowded lines at the DMV or retail outlets, sitting in traffic jams, competing with others for that last big screen tv on the shelf on Black Friday, etc, it is easy to view the nameless faces as adversaries. Too many tribes, all jammed into minimal space - things get weird.

I assume most are aware of Calhoun's studies with rats in the early 1960s. Overcrowding led to all manner of social ills. Yes, there is some controversy on whether the studies can be applied to humans, but seems reasonable to me. I am sure those who live in crowded urban areas will disagree.
