I am willing to bet that the owners of rental property factor the upkeep and property taxes into what they charge for rent. Surely the owners are smart enough to do that... or do you think they lose money each year on their rental properties?

The problem is that people need to live near where their jobs are.

It is YOU who suggests those in poverty are trying to buy property - not me.

I'm the one that is pointing out that those people may have dreams of owning property, but for most it is pure fantasy.

Having a mortgage on a home includes more than payment on the principle.
    - interest
    - insurance on the home required by the mortgage company
    - property taxes
    - upkeep that, for an apartment renter, would be covered by the landlord (plumbing, heating, roof, water, electricity, etc.,)

Plus, those with low paying jobs often can't count on living in one place for the number of years required to break even on owning a home. They may also have more irregularity in their income.

This whole idea of "buy a home if you're living paycheck to paycheck" is just plain STUPID.

And, NOBODY is claiming anybody is owed anything. That is a pathetic bit of right wing propaganda with NOTHING to support it.

Ah yes .. that other old chestnut in the myriad 'reasons' why it's better to throw away a million bucks, than spend $50k on an investment.

Dude, the lies you tell yourself to avoid it only carry weight to you. Everyone else knows that upkeep costs are much lower than rent.

That might be true where you live, but where I live $1800 a month would be 'affordable housing'.

More importantly, even if you only pay out $270,000 over a lifetime (and I'm not sure how you concluded that people only pay rent for 45 years .. but I guess you needed to make it seem less?), that could have bought you five houses outright. That $270,000 will also translate to a million dollars for your landlord due to capital appreciation etc. That's a million dollars that YOU could have earned from property.

I know people on welfare who live like kings. Want to know why? Because they OWN their home and don't have to pay rent.

I have relatives still doing that in their 50's. They started paying rents at around age 20, and none pay less than $2000 a month. Think about what that could have bought even after 30 years .. then consider they'll keep doing it for another 30 years. Doh!

    UNEMPLOYED people can live anywhere.

No, you're trying to argue the difficulty for low income people trying to buy property in freaking SEATTLE. As though that's where poor people seek to buy.

Dreaming of owning property in EXPENSIVE COASTAL CITIES is strictly a dream for 99% of humanity. But 99% of us are not foolish enough to make that a reason to never buy property.

You obviously missed the part where I asked you to THINK about this.
But we're used to denial being the escape hatch for the left. No surprise.

45 yrs would put one about 65 yrs old. So if you want to add more years go for it. At $500/mo it's $6000/yr.
Most on welfare are living in low rental places, perhaps even subsidized based on the income they get. Here in most of the USA.

OK, I own several homes, so I don't disagree that owning homes is a good thing for most. But many just can't do it. Or have tried and lost it.

Since that's just an estimate, I think it's way to high. There are some employed high tech workers in places like Mountain View and San Francisco who actually end up living in campers or some such because rents are sky high in those areas, but as a percentage of the homeless population, I imagine the true percentage is miniscule, not 25%.

Of course it does. The childish "Did not! Did not!" crap doesn't cut it in the grown-up world.

Are you planning to have all renters executed at age 65? Or are you using that end point to avoid addressing the retirement (ie no income) years during which renters still have to keep paying rent?
