My basic belief is that some measure of insuring that people don't procreate completely irresponsibly is needed - such as is demonstrated by the generations of children living entirely on "the system" due to parents continually "churning out babies" despite having no means or qualifications necessary to sustain them.

(It's also worth noting that every society from ancient to modern has had some means of population control, or trying to ensure that extremely irresponsible procreation didn't happen - such as harsh laws against adultery or unplanned pregnancy in the Biblical Old Testament and other ancient sources).

As far as how to impliment it well, I'm unsure, but the fact that a person has to have more qualifications to drive a car or become a fast food worker than they do to produce a baby is every disturbing (with the only minimum qualifications being able to legally consent, and have functioning genitals).

There's a possibility that there are some elements that enjoy unrestricted or irresponsible procreation because they believe it provides a potentially "easy source of labor, votes, or otherwise", but this is rather reprehensible.

Limit babies to one per couple. It's something the Chinese got right.

You realize that when the birth rate is lower than the death rate, the population will decline? Do you also realize the economic implications of a declining population?

Now, I am not against incentivizing people to not have 3+ children. However, it is important to think about the social and macroeconomic implications before doing so. The Chinese actually stepped back from their one child per couple policy.

i think the earth can sustain a maximum human population far below the current 7 billion. perhaps 500 mullion would be better.

we might be 1 covid variant away from my ideal.

I don't think it's that simple, no. That's just wishful thinking.

Fertility responds to incentives. That's why countries have fertility crashes during recessions or depressions, and why Student Loan debt has delayed family formation in the US and has lead to lower national fertility. Or Hungary's new family friendly programs has increased fertility there. Not every aspect of fertility is subject to public policy but a lot of it is.

And magically, more boys than girls were born. China is not a good example of humane government.

We have the EXACT OPPOSITE Problem right here in the good old USA. Our birth rate is at historic lows, we have far more dying than being born. Without substantial immigration into our country we will begin seeing our businesses begin to fold or contract due to lack of customers.

China now also has our problem of a declining population as do most if not all E.U. countries. Even many African countries now also are seeing population declines.

Sounds like the gov in the bedroom. So who’s going to sneak into the bed room of married couples and jump up and yell, “ cut that out.”
