It could be that .. or could be a nod to the English tradition of "school dinners". At least initially.

But I have no doub that in the 21stC, it's about fostering dependence.

    And Taco Bell and beer!

The kinds of people who absolutey hate real life examples of cause/effect, because Mother Govt has convinced them of an alternative universe - where the laws of physics are suspended for special people.

    1) No one is forced to have children. Stop looking at a single moment in time - 'born children' - and think about the bigger picture. If you put off managing this stuff properly because you're focused purely on that one point, you evidently don't give a crap about all the future children who will be negatively impacted - which is a much greater number of children.

    2) When someone is exchanging food for the family, for cash, they are most definitely cheating.

I can’t speak for the US as a whole, but where I live now, from the 1880’s when it was settled by mostly Germans, Poles, and Czechs until the mid 2000’s when final consolidated ended the one room schoolhouse, the lunch pail or brown bag was the tradition. :)

I grew up further west and was driven by my parents or a neighbor to a fancy 2 room private school where we all ate a lunch our parents sent. Back then I envied the kids with potato chips, sweet drinks, and a doughnut for desert. But if my parents were still living I’d thank them every dang day for the shriveled apple from last fall, cheese and lettuce on whole wheat, and carrots and celery. :)

I think it’s terrible the state raises children. Sometimes kids here might spend an hour a day with their parents. If that. If you count the time a parent spends watching the kid play ball from the stands.

That’s the absolute truth even though it sounds crazy to most people. They really have convinced people laws of physics can be suspended!

I welcome you to provide some evidence I believe laws of physics can be suspended. Go….

In this thread I have had conversation with someone who doesn’t understand how soda and candy cause obesity! And you think I don’t understand laws of physics? LOL

Neither @crank or I are Republicans. Neither of us care much one way or the other about political parties. We are socialists.

    Personal responsibility isn’t political.

That's a great early life lesson! We still do the same in this country, as school lunches don't exist here. Can't claim all parents provide the healthy sammiches and apples though

It's absentee parenting. Or rather, no parenting at all. They're more like resentful 'keepers' .. providing a bed and throwing some slop on a plate once a day. What passes for good parenting is saying "I love you" as often as possible (while living as though you yourself are a much higher priority).

If your comfort seeking programming is powerful enough, you won't ever stop to consider any of it. You'll invoke your inner lemming because it keeps your belly full with the least effort.

Thank you for stepping up there. The indolent lushes hate it when we declare ourselves - it makes them itchy in the imagined mao suit :D

The irony being that personal responsibility is our primary obligation under collectivism. Those who refuse it are water carriers for monopoly capitalism, and for the enslavement of the common man.

Hmmm. Never really boiled it down that far to “comfort seeking”, but that’s really what the bottom line is I suppose.

That’s fascinating you don’t have school lunches. How have you avoided it?

Yes but people in refugee camps are likely much more resourceful and talented at cooking than the average food stamp recipient in the US. I’m not sure most here would know a whole grain was even food.

I’ve actually never had an MRE. I know some who have love them and some hate them. Did you get along ok with them?

It just never happened here. Even our most expensive private schools don't do them. I guess it's cultural .. but either way, it would never take off here. Parents would hate it. They would not want that additional cost added to education, when it's something they can do at home more cheaply.

Overall, we have a very different education culture here. Our public schools are superior to private schools in academic rankings, and so are very popular. There isn't really a rich/poor divide in the school landscape. Working class kids attend private schools, and rich kids attend public schools. We also don't have a university culture like yours. Here, kids commute from home to their local school via public transport. While on-campus accommodation (dorms?) exists, it's a very modest supply, and is insanely expensive. Way outside the reach of even middle class families.

When you've spent your life seeking that path of least resistance, you reach a point where the only conceivable goal is more comfort. You've effectively put everything else outside your own reach. That's going to make securing comfort your highest priority.
