A bit harsh! I think most Americans are decent and for the most part the American military has tried to do its best under tricky circumstances. There are always going to be rogue elements in a large military force.

Now as for the politicians that started unnecessary wars, that is a different matter!

I think these bombings were horrific and horrible. However, the Japanese weren't going to stop. Also bear in mind this was 75 years ago.

I know it doesn't justify bombing and killing so many civilians, but what the Japanese did to civilians in other countries, to our Aussie POWS, including our comfort women... (Fill in blank). We're talking World war 2, man. 80 million dead.

I agree with a lot of your posts and sentiments, but I hope that you are you one of those people that can see both sides of the equation? If you talk about American atrocities you need to talk about all the other atrocities. I say let bygones be bygones with that one.

No military is particularly kind to civilians. It's all relative. In WWII children hiding in basements were told to listen to the languages they heard, If it was German or Russian they stayed hidden. Germans would kill them and Russians would rape them, but if they heard English they came out for the Americans gave them chocolate

Read an interesting article how Israel went after the vast tunnel network Hamas
created in Gaza. About 100 km of tunnels were taken out in the most densely
populated place in the world. At some points Israel sunk a missile into a tunnel
at the center of an intersection as it was the only place that wasn't under a
building. Highly specific munitions were employed to collapse tunnels without
effecting people above. Must find that article.

Made no difference. Israel was seen as being a mass murderer for the forty or
so civilians who died. Meanwhile Hamas fired 4300 missiles at Israeli schools,
    hospitals, shopping centers.

What does this nonsense narrative have to do with Afghanistan .. orther than apologizing for intentional killing of civilians .. something Israel has been very casual about and in fact - "pro active" would be a better word. What is absurd nonsense is picking one event during a 70 year civil war where one side tried to avoid civilian casualties .. got to do something for the cameras once in awhile .. while ignoring all the gazzilion examples where they intentionally killed civilians ..

A joke of a post .. as normally Israel is dropping 1000 lb bombs directly on a building - in crowded neighborhood -- cause some bad guy wandered into it.

it was not biden who surrendered to the taliban.

biden did do the correct thing, and withdrew from an untenable position with, minimal casualties.

Same old .. same old with you .. any criticism of US foreign policy and they must be PR for ISIS .. a nonsense anti American Narrative .. dressed up as Patriotic Emperor with no clothes.

And clearly this person Can't be American .. as you think no good American would be critical of our Gov't ... as that would be "un-Patriotic"

Makes sense I suppose to the Authoritarians in the crowd .. Chinese have done fairly well with that rule .. perhaps I should reconsider .. you may be right .. some kind of dictatorship may be the best way to go .. seems lots of your fellow liberals feeling that way these days .. and why not run with the Blue herd .. they did win the last election after all. .. if the wind is blowing that direction .. why go against the wind right ?

Yeah .. think I will take a pass .. not a big fan of Authoratarianism .. way too much Gov't power for my liking .. but, what do I know .. each to their own .. you are welcome to your opinion .. but forgive me for not sharing it .. still like the "liberty or death" .. land of free .. that kind of stuff .. rather than the Utopian land of the sheep in your vision.

So true! Yes, it's the politicians who've so many times since WWII taken this country to war under fraud. Sadly, going to war under fraud has become the American Way since WWII

Eisenhower was right to warn against the military industrial complex, but it was too late.

The war between Israel and the Arabs is a proxy for a greater war
between Islam and the West. Israel is at the bleeding edge of that.
I recall an Israeli saying after the Munich Massacre, 'What they do
today to us they will do tomorrow to you.' After that we saw airline
hijackings, bombings and terror become a lot more widespread.
Same with the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

I marvel how the IDF phoned peole in buildings that we in the
danger zones. PHONED them. Imagine Americans phoning half
a million people in Tokyo 1945 warning of a fire storm coming.
Never happened before. And this 'knock on the roof' to warn the
inhabitants you have 10 minutes to get out. Why doesn't Hamas,
or the Tabliban, phone or 'knock on the roof' before the mass
killing of civiians? Answer - they don't need to, they aren't under
    media scrutiny.

I wonder. There are millions of civilians in Gaza. There are many
thousands of Hamas 'soldiers.' The Media/Arab/Liberal narrative
is that the 'Jews' 'kill civilians.' This is interesting - how do they
target these civilians? Do they shoot the fat ones, or those with
beards? I mean, like Afghanistan it's only 'civilians' who are killed.
Why don't Americans and Israelis target the 'soldiers' instead?
Wouldn't they win the war that way?

That's ironic, because you brought race into the discussion and can't stop talking about it even though the thread had nothing to do with it. Likewise people like you are working overtime to make the WI SUV killer incident about race when there is no evidence that it was about race.

I marvel as well at these publicity stunts .. experts in propaganda - not sure what this has to do with dropping the first nuke though .. would have been moronic to phone up the Japs - and Israel are no moron's so they would not have phoned them up .. and the US back in 1945 were not morons -- so they would not have phoned either - and Hamas are not morons

So if Israel are not moron's .. US not morons - Hamas not moron's .. Answer ?

Yes you did .. I used the term Black vs White Paradigm .. and you thought this term had something to do with black and white people .. which is kind of humorous given your dislike of acadamia .. but the term has nothing to do with race .. and yet you went off for a number of posts on race .. even after having this explained to you.
So once again .. No .. the phrase "Black vs White Paradigm" has suggests nothing about Socialism implying racism ... just another bucket of made up nonsense.

Yeah the violence over there doesn't really have anything to do with the US. The us only really ever got involved with it because of the cold war and Russia's involvement with the Middle East.

But the problem goes back to who succeeded Muhammad. To us here in the West it seems like a stupid reason to kill people over 13th centuries but it isn't really about who succeeded Muhammad it's about who gets to control the caliphate. This is why Islam can never have a Renaissance.

Okay. So in 2021 when someone says "Black vs White" it has nothing to do with race. Ok... you run with that and expect anyone, anyone at all to buy it. Ok...

Socialism has nothing to do with racism. Socialism has to do with burden hard working people to support bums. Nothing racial there at all.

The Guardian lacks understanding of Geo-Political Strategy, as do you.

The goal in Afghanistan was never to win. The goal in Afghanistan was to carve out another jumping off point for conflict with Iran, and to maintain tension in the region until such time as a situation develops that could be exploited by the US to initiate conflict with Iran.

As I've said several 100 times, when the time comes, you're going into Iran and it won't matter who is President.

Whether you elect Trump or Hiden or Billary or Harris or Ralph Nader or a Libertarian, or a Commie, Socialist or Independent matters not.

You could dig up Mother Teresa's bones and prop her up in the Oval Office and when the time comes, she'll give the order.

If the Dali Lama could ever be President, he'd give the green-light.

The Path the US chose is fated. If the US backs down now, it's all over for you.

And all of them are clueless.

No, there's truth and then there's desperate people.

It is an irrefutable fact the US warned the Emperor in advance exactly what it intended to do.

The Emperor's own vanity led him to ignore the warnings.

Even after the first bomb was dropped, the Emperor refused to yield.

A second bomb was dropped and the Emperor still refused to yield initially. Fortunately, his vanity waned and he signaled the US in time to prevent the 3rd target from being destroyed.

The fatal flaw in your argument is that in lieu of the use of nuclear weapons -- and let's be real....it is "nuclear" that drives everyone insane -- the US could have simply fire-bombed one city each day until the Emperor admitted that he was not a god and surrendered.

More people died and even more were injured in the fire-bombing of Tokyo than either Hiroshima or Nagasaki.

Imagine 10 Japanese cities going up in smoke. That would be 2 Million dead and even more injured, but according to you, that's better than nuking 400,000 people.

The phrase in question is not "Black vs White" The phrase in question is "Black vs White Paradigm" - so in 2021 - as has been the case for at least a century .. the term has nothig to do with race -- unless using the comparison in relation to race .. which was not the case here .. as we are talking Monopolies .. capitalism vs socialism .. and your black vs white paradigm . "All or nothing" definitions .. which make absolutely no sense in real world application .. but that's OK ... at least now you know what a "Black vs White" paradigm is .. or .. perhaps another example.

suppose having a religious discussion .. with a literalist .. someone who believes every word of the Bible is God Breathed .. That is a black vs white paradigm .. all or nothing. .. if one tenet in belief is dented .. the whole structure collapses ... if one error is found.

When talking God vs Devil .. this is a black vs white paradigm ..

Anyways .. rest easy - there was no inference related to race being made in my comparison of extreme forms of Capitalism -Socialism.

"Socialism has nothing to do with Racism" - I disagree .. Strongly the more I think about it .. .. but that's just me .. all that Academic nonsense which has caused my definition of Socialism to differ from yours .. including more than just had working people supporting Bums .

And the Japanese believed the Emperor was a god, so that doesn't say much. They also believed it their god-given right to lord over all of Asia, which is one reason that whole mess started in the first place, so that's 2 fails by the Japanese people.

The real issue is actions speak louder than words.

The Emperor did not surrender when warned, did not surrender after the first bomb, did not surrender after being warned the 2nd bomb would be dropped, did not surrender after the 2nd bomb was dropped, and did not surrender immediately when warned a 3rd bomb was coming, but sort of surrendered in the 11th Hour to prevent the 3rd bomb.

The fact that the Emperor refused to surrender even after 2 weapons were used is proof he had no intention of surrendering.

    No, it's Iran.

Right, because the 2nd Imperial Japanese Army Headquarters in Hiroshima was really only there to sell girl scout cookies.

It is also a fact that naturalized US Citizens born in Japan and natural-born US Citizens of Japanese ancestry were spying on US military forces and sending photographs and written reports to Japan.

Rounding them up and putting them in detention centers was the logical common sense thing to do.

Conducting investigations to determine whether they were actually spying for Japan -- and releasing them from detention if they were not -- was also the logical common sense thing to do, but the US failed in that regard.
