James and Jennifer Crumbley are each facing four counts of involuntary manslaughter. Their son, 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley, allegedly fired at least 30 rounds in the hallways of Oxford High School on Tuesday, killing four classmates and injuring seven others, including a teacher.

"The parents were the only individuals in the position to know the access to weapons," Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald said Thursday. The gun "seems to have been just freely available to that individual."

"All I can say at this point is those actions on mom and dad’s behalf go far beyond negligence," McDonald also told WJR-AM. "We obviously are prosecuting the shooter to the fullest extent. ... There are other individuals who should be held accountable."

Its about time to start charging these parents for their part in these shootings. Glad to see it.

These parents KNEW he had a gun and the Mother texted him saying DON"T DO IT.

The teen recorded videos the night before the shooting in which he talked about shooting and killing students the next day at Oxford High School.

His behavior was concerning enough that school officials called Crumbley's parents to the school for a meeting on Tuesday just a few hours before the shooting,

Yet the school nor any of the other kids or parents notified law enforcement...

    Wow.

I bet they wish they lived in a State that had Negligent Storage Laws.
Because Michigan is not among the 14 States with Negligent Storage Laws.

14 States Have Laws Imposing Criminal Liability when a Child Gains Access as a Result of Negligent Storage of a Firearm: Fourteen states (California, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Rhode Island, and Texas)
    __________

Because, since there wasn't that kind of law, the only way to hold the parents criminally liable was to charge them in that manner.

The Michigan AG (Nessel) literally called this (2 Days Ago):

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel told the Free Press on Wednesday state laws are opaque when it comes to holding an adult accountable for a minor using that adult's gun in the commission of a crime.
While she believes the state Legislature needs to update the law, prosecutors in the past have used a range of charges against adults.
"We don't have specific laws on the books that speak to that, like they have in other states," Nessel said.
"Theoretically, if you had a case where you had a teenager who had demonstrated some sort of instability, mentally or suicidal or homicidal thoughts or actions, or anything to that extent, and in addition to that you still allowed this child to have unfettered access to a weapon, then theoretically I don't think it would be a huge stretch to charge the parents with involuntary manslaughter under those circumstances."

How would they know he had a gun or was threatening to shoot students?

My understanding is that the text message was sent after the shooting, when the mother learned that there had been a school shooting at her child's school.

It wasn't just the day of the shooting that he was called in. They also had him in the office several days prior. Students have stated that there were rumors of a shooting or violence that was going to happen. Yet no one said anything until it was too late...

He used his fathers gun. His father should be charged with voluntary homicide as a result of his inability to protect his firearm from mis-use.

Wouldn't that be the job of the School faculty? They didn't even show concern when he was in their office two hours before the shooting.

Not according to the DA when she decided to charge the parents.

Both parents are being charged as both parents knew he had the gun

    In Michigan:
Manslaughter carries a maximum possible sentence of 15 years in prison. The minimum sentence is subject to the sentencing guidelines.
Therefore, the minimum is probation and up to a maximum of 15 years. The minimum applicable to an individual defendant will vary, depending on prior offenses and how they are scored when determining the sentencing recommendation.

These parents enabled, if not helped to facilitate this crime.
Judging by the Pro Trump, pro 2nd amendment posts on social media, I would tend to think that they are a bad influence on the kid, and criminally culpable.

Exactly. If I were one of the parents of the dead or injured, I would be suing that school back to the Stone Age...

I can see Criminal Negligence. Murder seems like an over charge.

I have a 19 year old now. He even has owned his own guns since the age of 7. At no time did he have access to any of his guns, unless we were headed to the range or a desert shoot. Having guns not secured with kids around is ridiculous.

I think that will be on the menu very shortly. I also hope they find the faculty involved criminally liable as well.

Awesome, so can we charge the mother of the Waukesha mass murderer? She bailed out the man who committed the greatest atrocity in Waukesha history. Can we file murder charges on the Democrat DA who let the POS out on bail? If so, I am REALLY REALLY liking where this headed. If not, this is just more partisan hackery out of the corrupt left.

Obviously, the School District (and anybody even tangentially (or potentially) liable) will be sued.

Wisconsin's Laws are different, but who knows?

Low bail for Waukesha suspect ahead of parade tragedy was the result of 'human error': DA

Ah, yeah, someone has to be at fault. Can't be that lax gun laws and a huge abundance of guns that are easily accessible to anyone are to blame. No, rather deflect, deflect, deflect, and make a culprit out of the teachers and staff, who do their best with all kinds of behavioral problems that arise every day. In fact, if they had expelled the kid the day before the shooting, you would have called them Nazis because the lefty teachers would discriminate against gun owners' children.

That's exactly what they should have done. Expelled him or at a minimum notify law enforcement. Then they would have done their due diligence and not be facing several potential law suits...

    Well, JH, to your point:
I just came across this tidbit:

Around 1:37 p.m., James Crumbley realized the gun — which was kept in an unlocked drawer in their bedroom — was missing

Well, it wasn't out in the open then. The kid had to go looking for it. Personally, I wouldn't keep a handgun for home defense under lock and key either. Criminals aren't going to wait for you to get your key and unlock the drawer...

I grew up with guns for hunting and fun. By age seventeen I owned five guns. All the guns in our home were accessible. We also had fishing and camping gear everywhere. We rode in the back of pickup trucks and there were no seat belts or child safety seats. Dogs and cats ran loose. It was life, and no one murdered or fell victim to murder. Nowadays we have tons of laws, far less liberty, and the people have become vicious on both sides of the law. Is that progress? People better wake up. Lowering standards and suppressing liberty is a recipe for disaster.
