Supreme Court’s Gorsuch refused to wear mask despite request over Sotomayor’s Covid concerns, report says

Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch has refused to wear a mask during in-person proceedings, despite a request from Chief Justice John Roberts for all members of the high court to accommodate Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s concerns about Covid-19, according to a new report Tuesday.

Gorsuch’s continued defiance has led Sotomayor — who has diabetes and is therefore at a higher risk of serious illness from Covid — to attend oral arguments remotely, according to veteran NPR Supreme Court reporter Nina Totenberg, citing court sources.

When the justices returned to the courtroom last fall to hear arguments in person, Sotomayor was the only one to wear a mask. With the surge of the highly transmissible omicron variant in the winter, however, Sotomayor felt unsafe sitting next to unmasked people, according to NPR.

Roberts “in some form” then asked the other justices to wear masks, Totenberg reported. Gorsuch, one of three justices nominated by former President Donald Trump, was the only one to refuse.

My first thought, what a dick. That's my second thought as well because it's a dickish thing to do. It reminded me of the dick I saw at the gym yesterday being dressed down by a woman for not wearing a mask. "Hey, I'm talking to you a**hole," was what got my attention. More of that please. More of those people who refuse to wear a mask, even when mandated, being kicked out of public places please.

What happened to common decency? When we are in a pandemic and someone in a meeting feels more comfortable if everyone wears a mask, I'll wear the f***ing mask. What's so hard about it? These are supposed to be professionals, who work close with each other and treat each other with respect.

He's not required to wear a mask, the CDC admits masks aren't really all that useful for the rona, and the justices don't have to attend in person. They're also all multiple times vaccinated.

What's so hard about it? Well the mask, according to the CDC and common sense, doesn't have much if any efficacy. So the request is purely about someone's feelings, not at all about actual safety or harm to them.
If I was asked to tie a yellow ribbon around my arm because a person had documented anxiety attacks around any human that did not tie a yellow ribbon around their arm, I would refuse to do so and if someone accosted me with a bad attitude about it I'd tell them to curse God and die. If someone asked me politely, I'd still refuse, but I would be polite about it. You get the respect you put in, come at me like a Karen and you'll be treated as such. I'm not being disrespectful to you simply because I won't comply with your irrational, unscientific, unreasonable, shrilly communicated, demand that I comply.
Consider: You are being disrespectful to me by making that demand, particularly in that way.

 

Actually if a homeowner says take your shoes off when entering my residence, you are obligated to do so if you want to enter. A residence is not the gym. Please learn to compare like things.

Not following irrational, unscientific requests to make sure someone's fee fees aren't hurt is not being an *******.

 

I don’t think masks are very effective, but when I go into a place that request masks be worn, I wear one. But I would never be so rude as to say “Hey, I’m talking to you, a**hole” if someone wasn’t wearing a mask.
