...The talking filibuster would, after lengthy debate, require a simple majority to advance any bill toward final passage. Democrats have also discussed a carveout from the filibuster for voting and elections reform, but that idea appears to be getting less traction.

Sinema and Manchin won’t support either option. Last week both centrists emphatically rejected weakening the filibuster, even as Biden came to the Senate to try and marshal their support. Sinema publicly upended the president's push ahead of his meeting with Democrats, while Manchin reiterated his opposition shortly after the meeting.

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.po...ms-filibuster-showdown-election-reform-527308

Top dems are desperate and so they have no choice but to try the stunt known as a talking filibuster. It too is destined to fail.

    Manchin said this today...
Headed to D meeting, Manchin effectively sinks new plan to use nuke option and create “talking filibuster” that would let 51 votes advance elections bill. “There's never been a simple majority vote to basically get off a debate… I don’t know how you break a rule to make a rule”

Keep changing the rules of the game until you can win. It's the Democrat way.

Seems to me to be a choice between keeping the filibuster which allows the minority to stonewall the majority or getting rid of it allowing the majority to force its will on the minority.

Yes, democrats change the rules as need be while claiming there is currently an attack on our democracy by republicans.

I'm thankful to both to Krysten and Manchin. Thanks to these two patriots, we can keep some thread of our traditional norms of the Senate. In the last year and a half, we'd seen North Korean politics, something that would be unthinkable in the US. So any stonewalling of the 'agenda' is greatly appreciated and patriotic.

Disagree. The progressive cancer that has consumed the DNC isn't interesting in working with anyone. It wants obedience to Marxist wokeology and when it doesn't get it the result isn't compromise, its elimination. It wont be long now, you watch. Someone will accuse Manchin of 'sexual assault', someone will claim they overheard Sinema making a 'racist' comment. Somewhere, in some room, some group of leftists are fabricating a scheme to bring these two down.

The right says the left is worse while the left says the right is worse. Partisans are predictable. If a thing is wrong then it is wrong for both. The left and right would benefit America by addressing the rampant hypocrisy on their own side before they start point the finger at the other side. Not going to happen as such ethical conduct runs contrary to partisan tribal nature. Do as I say, not as I do, should be the motto of partisans.

Carve out here, carve out there, EVERY BODY GETS A CARVE OUT SOON.

Let's have a carve out in filibusters for voting and election reforms because they come up SO OFTEN..................

I will not turn a blind eye to hypocrisy no matter which side it comes from. Expecting others to keep silent when they see the hypocrisy of an argument is silly. As for the OP, I have previously addressed it and added my thoughts.

Everybody (from Both Parties) has KNOWN Forever that there was Zero Chance to get the 50 Votes needed to can the filibuster.

Even before the GA Special Elections were held, Manchin came out against changing it.
And, even recently, other Dem. Senators (not named Sinema) had very public reservations

    https://www.politico.com/news/2022/01/10/democrats-filibuster-vote-526863

Thus, this "news" is totally unsurprising.
There was ZERO Chance that the Dems would ever get 50 Votes.

And, Everybody KNEW That (BEFORE the GA Special Elections were even held).

We need a meme with a donkey staking democracy in the heart while saying we had to do it to save democracy from the Republicans!

Keeping it allows the majority to win if they make a good enough case to get the votes to override the veto. Getting rid of it would mean the minority could just go home because they aren't going to matter any longer. I would rather nothing happen in Congress rather than have the majority (of either party) pushing through a bunch of stupid crap just because they have 51 votes.

In this hyper-partisan landscape good arguments are worthless as they are sure to be rejected by the partisans on the other side. The scenario you present works best when each side is levelheaded and value critical thinking over loyalty to party ideology. Today party loyalty trumps loyalty to country, critical thought and fairness. You can’t make deals with groups that see you as the enemy.

How many controversial issues that have popular support have been shot down in the House, Senate or White House? Gun control. Marijuana legalization. Campaign finance reform. There are good arguments to be made on all those issues… which does little to nothing to move those that are against it.

I wish good arguments mattered but they rarely do. The arguments that move people are emotional and incendiary. At least in the current political environment. Simple observation of most of the posts on this forum bear that fact out.

EMILYs list just dropped Sinema specifically because she wont support the radical left's attempt to bypass Congressional rules and allow the Marxist progressive minority to rubber stamp literally everything they want without having to debate, compromise, or cooperate. Leftists are the only authoritarians, leftists are the only fascists.

Agreed. Everyone knew that the only fascist established in America, the radical progressive left, would run this play.
