I don't believe the official Ukrainian figures, but if we halve them to account for wishful thinking that is still devastating. The much larger USSR officially lost 15,000 in Afghanistan in 10 years. Smaller Russia has probably lost 5000 dead in a week in Ukraine. And probably 3-4 times that wounded. That is beyond a disaster and it can't just be handwaved away like Putin and his followers want to.

This is bad and it isn't going to stop being bad for a while.

Ukraine has probably lost more people, but they are dying for their country. Russians are dying to conquer people who tell them to go home in their own language.

The point however was the coverage by the external Media - and since the civil conflict in Ukraine is touchy for some .. touchy feely for others as illustrated above - lets look at another conflict .. Say "Syria" a conflict 50 times worse than Ukraine .. thus far anyway .. let me know when we get to the first 100,000 dead .. and we will be 20% of the way there ..

I wonder sometimes whether you are as cynical as you seem and believe your own lies. I really do. I suppose that living in that fake news environment of yours and your centuries-old culture of being subjugated to the strong central authority of one authoritarian regime after another, which has no regard for human rights or individual liberty and is clueless about the principles of democratic self-governance would leave you with a pretty miserable view of the world, perhaps unable to imagine any other reality, unable to fathom the kind of freedom that we in the west too often take for granted.

Relative to what it consumes, the US produces little of genuine productive value. It runs continuous trade deficits and budget deficits. Its most successful sectors are those who speculate in the Ponzi scheme economy, where profit statements reflect profit in paper and not of anything of value being produced.

This Ponzi scheme economy operates without the risks that bring down other such schemes by virtue of the demand for its IOUs, with everyone accepting those IOUs (whether US bonds or even US paper money) based on the role of the US dollar as the currency of international trade (making demand for the US dollar far outstrip what America itself produces, giving the US the cushion to run these trade deficits) and US bonds by both what I mentioned and belief or confidence the emperor will be around to honor its IOUs.

This entire fraudulent system isn't even good for America, unless you believe these perverse incentives create useful productive people (no evidence for that). For the rest of the world, it depends on a) whether you are major stakeholder in the Ponzi-scheme or merely its slaves?, and b) if you really have a better alternative in mind? On the latter question, for Putin to play footsie with the greediest and least redeeming stakeholders in the Ponzi scheme, namely the like of Trump, Netanyahu or now Benet, doesn't suggest he would have a better alternative in mind at all.

 

Russia's life expectancy is comparatively low (74), lower for instance than Iran's (77), but higher than Ukraine's (72) and much higher than the typical like expectancy in most African countries (e.g., South Africa 64, Nigeria 54, etc) .

 

Clearly the United States can contribute with well more planes than European allies.

If we sent planes [Mig29 or others] to Ukraine, Russian bombers will destroy them. The solution would be to keep the planes in NATO bases, making the Ukrainian pilot go there. But this would mean a partial involvement in the conflict [it would remember what Italy did during the war against the Serbians: NATO planes took off from our bases in Italy, but we didn't take part to the attacks].

In most countries, life expectancy is somewhat higher in females, although in Russia the gap is a little greater. Regardless, those aren't like the figures in Africa and, any thread about Russia and Ukraine (whose life expectancy is lower than Russia's), your comment was simply propaganda driven by nature.

 

No, it was a very slight dramatic flourish pointing to a fundamental fact - if Russians had dark skin & fewer nukes we would think of them as 'third world'. Your map actually illustrates that quite well. I have just stripped back those qualifiers and gone for the truth. Russia is a third world society. 'Upper Volta with missiles' to borrow a phrase from an earlier time.
