Iranian and Russian 2nd generation anti-tank missiles have turned American Abrams tanks in Yemen, and Israeli Merkava tanks in Lebanon, into liabilities in recent battles and clashes. The real lessons from this war have little to do with Russian ground capabilities but their tactics and their failure to heed the lessons from recent wars, Otherwise, there is not been a greater embarrassment and mismatch than Israel failure to take Bint Jbeil right on their border with Lebanon. The whole town had been reduced to rubble by the Israeli air force, yet 100-150 Hezbollah fighters were able to beat back several unsuccessful tries by an Israeli force of 5,000 spearheaded by their so-called "elite" Golani Brigade.

I think the entire world is at least somewhat surprised at how poorly the Russian military has performed. Clearly, they are being outfought by a more determined opponent, which is why we're seeing the Russians resort to the war crimes they're famous for, most particularly the indiscriminate shelling and bombing of civilian areas. Analysts have also given the Russian general staff low marks for planning.

The question that was in my mind when the Russians invaded Ukraine was whether or not their logistics had improved since they invaded Georgia in 2008 and the answer is a resounding NO, and this lies at the root of many of the problems they are currently experiencing. I thought they would have surely gotten their act together by now but their logistics are just as laughably bad as they were 14 years ago.

Bottom line, the Russian military is not a top tier conventional fighting force. Certainly, they have nukes and some nice high tech systems, but ultimately its strength is in numbers, as it has been for centuries. The problem, obviously, is that size doesn't necessarily translate to success. History is full of examples of numerically superior armies getting their asses kicked by smaller forces, and the Russians have experienced this in the past and may have stepped in it again.

They have a lot of western manufacturing plants there and if they kill american economy then who will place orders, retool plants, maintain the supply chain and pay wages? Doesn't really matter to the point I was making. Over 500 Abrams tanks operated by US forces were severely damaged or destroyed in Iraq alone. And yet there is a big difference between the quality and quantity of anti-tank weapons you can supply to forces fighting the Americans than you can supply elsewhere, especially to Ukraine, fighting the Russians.

Getting off of oil will save the world.

 

Tanks broke down or are damaged. Most can be repaired and sent back. This is why it's stupid to cite number like 500 Abrams tank damaged or destroyed means nothing. The USA has recovery vehicules and well trained maintenaced crew. Heck even Germany was able to repair and send back most of the tan ks that were damaged during the war.
