that is why tenure exists. listen to these guys, they obviously do not understand tenure yet ,they blithly proceed to dismantle a system which has advanced civilization since the enlightenment.

What is the next step in this emulation of Russia? Pushing journalists out of windows? Mysterious “suicides” of prominent figures? Inviting opponents to tea and Polonium?

Your claims are bounded only by your imagination. The only legitimate authority in our system is the Will of The People exercised to secure our rights. If The People wish to reevaluate professors every 5 years prior to renewing their next five year commitment, they shall. If the professor feels this is a violation of their rights, they are welcome to litigate their claim in an impartial courtroom, who after hearing from both sides will render an detailed sourced and well reasoned decision.

You seem to think we should live under a credentialed unelected oligarchy, we have chosen, instead, to be a Free People, governed, not ruled, by those of our choosing. If our choices bother you, I'm sure you are well aware of what you are welcome to do with your objections.

No one is "dismantling tenure". Tenure exists to ensure a quality education for the student. You seem to be laboring under the delusion that universities exist for the professors. Your claim that a simple evaluation every five years will halt the very advance of civilization is hyperbole.

Yes - which THIS bill is interfering with. Just because someone has the AUDACITY to speak out/ say what is on their mind or worst contradict someone on the right they should not fear their livlihood

If this were just once instance it would be less concerning than the repeated pattern of silencing of critics

And you lot keep telling us Aussies we are backward because we have no “first amendment”

Academia has blue hair and non-binary pronouns. They couldn't call out a woman at this point because they do not know what the word means.

I think this is a good idea. As much as I am proponent for higher education, I do not believe in guaranteed employment for life and while tenure does not guarantee the professor will never get fired it is extremely difficult to do so. I think as long as it is left up to the institutions to decide a professor's worthiness I have no problems with it. Just keep the politicians out of the decision making of the administrative issues of the colleges.

Now the next group that should be addressed are supreme court judges. Another profession where they can keep their jobs for life.

I don't think anyone should be fired for a political opinion. However, I can see firing a professor for teaching political ideology instead of the subject he or she is paid to teach. Tenure doesn't eliminate responsibility. Professors have a job to do and their academic subject is their responsibility. When I was in college in the 1960's, there wasn't a whisper of political ideology in the classroom. Every single course I studied was on topic. It is a better way to go.

so much for privacy, Republicans want to push politics in our schools

"Florida Students Must Register Their Political Views With the State"

    https://www.democracydocket.com/ale...egister-their-political-views-with-the-state/

"Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed legislation into law on Tuesday that requires students and faculty of public Florida universities to report their political views to the state starting this July. House Bill 233 requires university students and faculty to fill out a survey from the government about their political beliefs in what Gov. DeSantis has called an effort to monitor “intellectual diversity” on campus. "

I guess he thinks Q-Republicans are underrepresented in our schools

Yeah see what I mean? Fascists have to engage in contentious homophobia in order to seize control. After all, it’s the job of a fascist to protect women from the evils of “neopronouns”.

The 1960s… or sometimes referred to as the height of the civil rights movement. And nobody ever talked politics? BS.

I only wish that this would apply to the handful of CLlimate change deniers that have been fogging up the debate for years

I agree that this is a lousy bill. I would prefer defining the job of professors to teach the academic subjects they are paid to teach without any political ideology or extraneous matters. They can discuss politics privately with students or other faculty members. College professors should aim to increase the knowledge and learning capabilities of all students, not just some of them. Imagine if police or fire departments checked political ideology before putting out a fire or making an arrest. Public university professors are government employees just like police and fire fighters. Public universities are public and should be available to the public regardless of who the people involved are. Bad situation. Bad bill. They should be able to do better.

Not in the classrooms where I studied. There is nothing wrong with talking politics. There is something wrong with teaching political ideology in a classroom when it replaces time spent on teaching the academic subject.

How much time is being spent on political ideology? Is it just off the cuff comments thrown out here and there or are teachers taking up valuable time? And how much time are they taking up? Are these teacher talking about their politics is every single class? And how many teachers at a given college are doing this? Does anyone know? Do we even know if any students have suddenly changed their world view simply because of what a professor spewed in class? Have YOU ever changed your viewpoints on any major political issue because of what someone said? Food for thought
