“I once asked, ‘If you’re innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?’ Now I know the answer to that question,” the statement said. “When your family, your company, and all the people in your orbit have become the targets of an unfounded politically motivated Witch Hunt supported by lawyers, prosecutors and the Fake News Media, you have no choice.”

Notwithstanding the blatant hypocrisy, but it sure as hell didn't occur to him when it was his opponents declaring the fifth, I mean, that realization wouldn't have been good for Donald Trump.

Naturally, when it is convenient for Donald Trump, he suddenly has an epiphany. However, now he is implying that the only valid reason to take the 5th when he is subject to a witch hunt. I don't think that's quite right, either.

The really awful thing about Trump is his intense paranoia that the entire media and everyone in it is out to get him, and that they are incapable of speaking the truth about Trump. He didn't invent the term 'fake news' but he did hijack it and implant it into the minds of his followers, to serve as a thought-terminating cliché, and he succeeded, given the plethora of usage of that term on this forum.

Beware of Trumpian thought-terminating clichés, which have two purposes:

    1. To kill the debate, to kill dissent against Donald Trump
    2. To curtail the ability to think critically among his supporters.

I say, to my fellow liberals, beware of them because Trump followers will try and use them in their rebuttals.

Typical TTCs are 'FAKE NEWS' "Leftist radicals', etc.

Help me shine a light on them and don't allow them kill the debate. Help me compile a list of them, thanks.

Usually people claim the 'fifth' when their lawyer tells them to. Lawyers tell them to, whenever they think there is even a half assed remote justification to do so. Its an idiot who does not advise it and its an idiot who does not take that that advice.

I saw the clip of him making those comments about anyone that takes the fifth...............and today........... he did just that.

But then he DID say : The MOB takes the fifth"...........didn't he??? ;-)

Hypocrisy does not begin to cover it. Nor does his belief in his exceptionalism.

But taking the fifth is better than being exposed to more of his lies.

“When your family, your company, and all the people in your orbit have become the targets of an unfounded politically motivated Witch Hunt supported by lawyers, prosecutors and the Fake News Media, you have no choice.”..... pretty much says it all... you obviously have missed the last five years of non stop harassment of this man and his family.

I'd be stunned if he didn't. I recall a certain BJ enthusiast asking someone to define what "is" is. All politicians stonewall when they get to court. I have no idea if he's guilty or not, I just don't know a single one of the current list of politicians in this country would would NOT claim the 5th.

Just let Dave Chappell tell it.

You know somebody ELSE who wouldn't take that advice? A person who actually IS innocent and wanted to run for president!

So one of those two things must not apply to Trump

Yet another thread in which the righties claim that the Orange Stain did nothing wrong, the FBI is real icky, he's being persecuted because he's so honorable and wants to clear the "swamp", etc.

Yes, TDS is real. But they've got the identities of those who suffer from the condition backwards.

Yeah it’s pretty funny he’s taking the 5th after previous comments, but general legal advice when you’re the target of a criminal investigation is to always take the 5th, even if fully innocent. Police and FBI will twist your words to make you seem guilty to a gullible jury if the police decide you’re probably guilty. Their job is to provide prosecutors with ammo to convict, and though they want to get it right, they are only human and have biases and mistakes.

Dude, if the Hillary hag can take 8 years of Whitewater investigations, 4 years of Benghazi investigations, two years of e-mail investigations - then
Trump can put on his big boy pants and ride this out.

My bet is that his lawyer gave him an ultimatum, 'plead the 5th or I drop you as a client'.

He'd do that because he knows that when Trump opens his mouth, he lies, he can't help himself.

He's obligated to protect his client, and he knows the ONLY way he can do that is force his client to plead the 5th, or threaten to drop him.

However, and the lawyer knows this, unlike a criminal case, pleading the 5th can be used against you. The Jury is allowed to take an adverse inference for every 5th he pled, and he did it over 400 times. His lawyer must have seen this as the lesser of two terrible options.

In a civil case, if the lawyer asked:

    Lawyer: "Are you a crook"

    Defendant: "I plead the 5th".

During the closing argument, the plaintiff's attorney can argue that the defendant must have agreed with the question, otherwise, why plead the 5th? You see, in a civil case, no one's liberty is as stake.

In a criminal case, he would not be allowed to do that.

So, in a way, Trump is screwed. If they win the case, my bet is that NY is going to try and shut his business down in NYC. Trump will not like that at all.

Yeah, he learned his lesson since General Flynn, did you actually read the article because it essentially says he changed his mind due to his experiences?

Your point is valid, but the more salient point is that a then candidate aspiring to be the president of the united states didn't know something so fundamental as this.

    That is the point.

And Biden was once firmly against roe v Wade.

Do you call that hypocrisy too or are people allowed to change their minds at some point?

It doesn't matter if you're guilty or innocent you never stand to gain anything from talking to the police or prosecutors
