Vladimir Putin's Russia poses the greatest current threat to NATO, says German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in a keynote speech he delivered to Germany's armed forces - the Bundeswehr.

Scholz told German military leaders that they should accept that Russia will define itself as an adversary to the European Union, the US and Nato - for the foreseeable future.

And, he said Germany's armed forces must become the best-equipped military force in Europe.​

Now that is what I call a Wendepunkt!

Germany will also be supplying MLRS and armored vehicles to Ukraine.

One more way Putin is making NATO great again.

 

What adversary will Russia be to the EU? I gather you haven't noticed but the EU is falling apart through its own stupidity. Besides, with what money will Germany become the biggest military force? The Euro is falling non-stop while inflation is rising.

I guess that's what one gets when they're out to break up other nations and destroy their economies. What we need now (God forbid), is our own civil war.

Russia already is an adversary to the EU, but you knew that.

Germany isn't suddenly broke because the Euro is a little weaker now than it was. Germany remains an economic powerhouse and can easily afford to invest more in its military.

You want us to have a civil war? That's kind of crazy. I prefer peace to war, life to death. That's why I oppose Russia's monstrous war of conquest in Ukraine, and if you stood on principle instead of regurgitating Kremlin propaganda, you would too.

 

Russia put the Warsaw Pact to bed at the end of the Cold War .... that Russia itself ended/introduced, by the way. It was the US (even with its manipulation of NATO and the EU) that has provoked a West vs. East adversary stance, but you knew that.

Germany has been redeemed. They're the good guys taking on the new bad guys now.

 

The EU is the best thing that ever happened to Germany. It gets prosperity and influence without the risks involved in constant wars with neighbours. Germany isn't going to upset that just because it has a strong military. 'Strongest in Europe' might never happen, but even if it does, the rest of Europe is more unified than it has ever been. Hardly fertile ground for military conquest.

 

This is rich, but I can put your worries at ease, these are just empty words. Without an army reform, Germany's military will be too inefficient, no matter how much money they pump into a rotten system. It's as if you were filling a bucket with a huge hole in it.

So, let me put your mind at ease, Germany will have no say at all in the after-war order. In fact we are the only player who are dumb enough to believe Russia can be re-integrated into the European family, its maybe the best we dont have a say. Its Poland and its Three Seas Initiative which will dictate the peace and they dont have the same naive attitude towards Russia, they wanna bring it down and make sure with US support the sanctions will never end.

Get used to the taste of glaze dear Russians and sleep well with your fantasies of Germany being the relevant country in that new Cold War. If it was you would not go down the route North Korea, which is the path to go for you.

I lived in Germany during the 1970s and I was always very pro-German and thought of the country as a solid leader of Democracy and top quality of life for its population. But since der Affenschau der verdammten Frau Merkel and the quote in the OP, I have no more confidence that Germany is worth following into the future.

 

If I were Russian or an apologist for Russia I would be WAY more worried about Poland. Germany has largely been housebroken under decades of affluent US oversight. The Poles are only a generation beyond Russian occupation and see Russia for the unreconstructed imperialist dictatorship it is. They are busily becoming the most important European part of NATO and they will use that position to pressure for a hard line on Russia inside & beyond NATO.

If there was a scenario where they could attack Russia the ywould literally fight to lead a drive on Moscow or St Petersburg...and they might get there. I wouldn't want to be a Russian unit in their way. The Ukranians just dismantled one of the best units in the Russian army with vastly inferior equipment to what Poland fields. I shudder to think what the poles would do in a similar situation.

 

The Poles? Yeah well throughout history the Poles have invaded Russia like 3 times and attempted 2-3 Coups. No other ignorant people have attacked the Russians as much as the Poles.

Very well said. The pro Russians here have just like Putin have bought the Trumpian line that NATO is falling apart and that the EU is an enemy of the US. Or one the Magyar has bought into that and also mimics the Trumpian love for Putin. The EU will change and the loss of the UK is a kick in the butt. Yet the UK will have to be a silent partner of the EU if it wants to maintain market ties. Maybe someday the EU will let Turkey in along with Georgia but that would depend upon how weak and or how disintegrated Russia will become. Putin perceives the EU and it father NATO as a threat but he is selling Russia out to China. China will turn Russia into a vassal state and Russia will becomes a confederation. As a confederation Russia will lose influence over Siberia and Siberia will become a semi independent entity subservient to China. China will form sort of Asian EU ( geneses of such is already in place as per the conference Putin and Xi attended). China will be the modern “Mongolian horde” based upon economic and political terms. Of corse the former USSR republics of the “Stans” will all be part of this.

 

You can't even beat up a few badly armed Ukranians Bill. The only way Russia could beat the Poles is nukes. Any Russian conventional force would just be a smear by the time the Poles finished with it.

Oh, and as a US taxpayer I'd like to thank you for helping to arm the Poles. Yet another valuable contribution to democracy Bill.

 

Your scenario could work to a degree if there where no nuclear weapons. You would need a strong independent Ukraine to guard Polands Eastern flank. Finland would have to be part of this and watch Poland’s northern flank. The price Finland would extract is the return of the Kerilian peninsula that Russia stole.
Your fantasy would be really funny and Karma would. win with the dismemberment of Russia. I would laugh my ass off for years if that would happen. What a fantasy you have.
PS Belarus become a vassal state of either Poland , Ukraine or split between the two.

 

Thats what I was talking about. Russians should not be too obsesseed with their German-hatred, their dream of a Germany which wont have a say in all this might come true, but not the way they want.

Germany is interested in re-establishing relationships and trade with Russia, when its up to Poland, they want to see them starve and collectively punished, paying reparations which will make sure they starve for generations.

I doubt that Poland would dare to start a direct attack against Russia, but interventions in Belarus to take down a pro-Russian regime etablishing one of their own puppets, definitely. And if its up to them, the embargo will never end until Russia ceases to exist.

 

I think you have a comprehension problem. I never said I wanted a civil war, (heaven forbid), but if the EU is breaking up because they tried to break up the Russian Federation, then isn't it possible that we might end up with the same fate?

 

It will take 5 to 10 years but it can be done. They will need to reform their acquisition system to become more efficient (if they continue dithering for 20 years over every combat system they will not get any where) but the 20% bump in the defense budget along with the $100 billion special fund is a good start.

I seem to recall Poland winning the Polish-Soviet war (1919-1921) where the Soviets attacked and invaded Poland than ended up losing a bunch of territory to Poland as the Orc army ran away.
